While the PDR-885 primarily serves as a sophisticated Closed Caption Encoder with an integrated Decoder for embedding caption and text data into Line 21 of the NTSC signal, its capabilities extend far beyond this essential function. This advanced unit offers the flexibility to insert Caption and Text data into either field of the Vertical Blanking Interval (VBI), enhancing its utility for professional broadcast applications.
Moreover, the PDR-885 is equipped with the ability to recover data from the incoming video signal from either field of the VBI. This high-tech feature allows for the display of Open Captions through the built-in Closed Caption Decoder, and the data can be captured by a computer via the PDR-885's serial data port. This seamless integration of Encoding, Decoding, and Data Recovery functions can be performed concurrently, ensuring a reliable and efficient workflow for users.
The unit's video data path is engineered to near perfection, with differential phase and gain errors impressively low at less than 0.1 degrees and 0.1% respectively. The video bandwidth exceeds 26MHz, while the Signal to Noise ratio surpasses 60dB, ensuring high-quality video output. The PDR-885 provides versatile connectivity options with inputs and outputs for composite NTSC video, Component (RY/B-Y/Y), and S-Video.
For instances where composite video is utilized, a high-performance relay ensures power-off bypass of the program video, maintaining signal integrity. Remote captioning is facilitated through a secondary serial port designed for modem input, expanding the unit's operational reach. Both serial ports can be configured for RS-232 or RS-422 I/O, with an optional plug-in PCB, and an internal jumper allows for baud rate selections from 1200 to 9600 bps.
The PDR-885 is designed to accommodate both local and remote caption data processing, with the capability to connect a modem and computer simultaneously, though only one can be active at a time. User interaction is streamlined with front panel LED indicators that display the unit's status and signal the presence of data on the incoming video. Additionally, a pair of front panel push-buttons enables users to execute an encoded test message or to switch the unit into bypass mode.
Prepared for future advancements, the PDR-885 is ready for V-Chip technology integration, which will empower parents to filter out television programming they deem inappropriate. LINK Electronics is at the forefront of this innovation, embedding the technology into the firmware of the PDR-885. The device adeptly manages the automatic repetition of "V-Chip" data and can interleave it with existing Line 21 Closed Caption data. An optional plug-in modem, supporting 1200 or 2400 baud, is available to enhance the unit's capabilities further.
The PDR-885 stands out as a versatile and efficient solution for encoding and decoding analog signals, backed by the reputable brand Link Electronics, known for its commitment to producing high-quality audio and video equipment. This combination of an analog CC encoder and data recovery decoder makes it an indispensable tool for professionals in the broadcasting and video production industries.
