Questions & Answers

Shopper : What is the density of this Lee solar filter? Or to put it another way, what exposure at ISO 200 works best? I'm looking for a filter bright enough that I can use 1/4000 sec. at f/16 at ISO 400 or LOWER. The purpose is ISS solar transits. With my visual filters, I have to use ISO 6400 to get a proper exposure at f/16 and 1/4000 sec., so the image is too noisy. I need one 10-30x brighter (OD3.5 to OD4).Dale C : I used the solar filter for the eclipse back in August and had fantastic results the colors were white not the the usual golden color with very little noise i tried to shoot at iso 200 also shutter speeds were ok but a did use a remote trigger to minimize camera shake i dont know if this filter is the one for you for it is a dark filter but it again it produced very good resultsKAREN P : I can't respond to your density question. However, I used it for solar eclipse. I used a 400 mm lens on my Canon Mark IV, f 5.6, 6400 ISO, 1/8000 and the filter worked beautifully.DALE F : I bought mine for the August 21 Great American Eclipse but, unfortunately, viewing was ruined by heavy cloud cover that day. Still, I tried a test shot on a clear day of the unobscured sun. The insert suggests starting at ISO 800, 1/800s at f/8, then experiment around that. With ISO 800, f/11, 1/400s at 800mm I obtained a reasonably good result, showing sufficient detail to reveal a sunspot. I wouldn't call it astrophoto quality, but that was not my intent. Converting that exposure to your ISO and aperture comes out a shutter speed quite a bit slower than what you're looking for, so my hunch is that the filter is a bit dark for your needs. Still it's a nice filter and I hope to use it when the next eclipse rolls around.JOHN E : I got a satisfactory exposure of the sun using ISO 200, f9.0, 1/100 sec. I made a range of exposures. The shortest one was 1/3200 sec at f9.0, ISO 200, and it was pretty dark. The filter gives the image a strong blue cast, incidentally.Robert N : You should only use it for solar events. To dark for other use.JAMES D : This Lee high density filter will not do the job you want. My preferred exposure is f/8 at 1/250 at ISO 100. At f/16 we are talking 1/125 at ISO 200.ROBERT A : It is a 20 stop filterJOE F : The filter is 20 stops in density.
Shopper : Will this filter fit in the Wine Country Camera filter vault? Is the thickness of the filter 2mm?ANDREW R : Compatibility with third party accessories has not been specified by the manufacturer. Thickness has not been specified by the manufacturer.
Jill D : I just want to be sure...can I use this filter for photographing the sun any time, regardless of an eclipse? And it will not hurt the sensor?JAMES D : Yes you can. It is safe for your camera. It is NOT safe for your eyes. Don't use it to look at the sun and do not look through the camera's viewfinder. You must use your camera in Live View mode. Happy Shooting!

Must have for solar photos.

Took images of the total eclipse from start to end. Just under 3 hours on 8-21-17. (total- no filter of course). I set Nikon D500 on aperture priority for the changing conditions. Lens- Opteka 500mm, f-8 mirror.

Great Filter

Works exactly how you need it to. Solid piece of glass yet keeps your images of the sun sharp. Only downside to this filter is the additional kits needed to attach it to your camera.

They made my day! Thanks Adorama!

Lee Solar Filter

While this filter didn't provide the pleasingly orange color that other filters provided during the recent solar eclipse, it worked effectively.

Its good but the sun looks white

The sun looks white through the filter. I was expecting it to look red as its shown on the cover.

Brilliant

The Lee 100x100mm Solar Eclipse Filter performed magnificently!! Got some wonderful shots, and the ease of removing the filter at Totality, and then replacing the filter as the moon continues its course, was quick & easy!! Pleased with the entire Lee Filter System!

Works well as advertised

Typical high quality Lee filter. Renders a white sun. I wasn't in a totality area for the eclipse, so I played around with it taped to my lens because the 95mm adapter was back ordered and results were good.

Did the job - even though a pricey solution

You are paying for the comfort of knowing you can photograph the sun safely. If you use a telephoto and look through your viewfinder without this filter, you will be blinded instantly. It is extremely dangerous to magnify the sun and then focus that on your eye! I recommend also using the black eyepiece cover that comes with your camera (to prevent stray light from entering your eyepiece when you take self-timer images). This prevents the possibility for even accidentally looking into the eyepiece when you are setting up. I got some good solar eclipse pictures with and without this filter, using live-view on the LCD screen to set up the position of the image and focus it on manual focus. The down side of this filter is that it's expensive for use only every 10 or so years to photograph an eclipse, and even more expensive because you need to buy the filter holder AND the adapter ring for your lens filter size. If you already use Lee filters, then fine, you don't have the extra expense. This was my first Lee filters foray, so it cost me quite a bit for these few pictures. You cannot simply manually hold the filter while you shoot, because you risk dropping it and it is made of glass. That would be a waste. You also would induce camera shake or lens flare. So you do need the filter holder and adapter ring. On the good side, I might buy some other Lee filters now.

Very pleased

I used the filter for the eclipse on Aug. 21, 2017. Matched it to a canon 100-400mm ll, 2x extender, 5dmk lll on a Benro Mach 3 with a b4 head. Very pleased.

Great Filter

Works exactly how you need it to. Solid piece of glass yet keeps your images of the sun sharp. Only downside to this filter is the additional kits needed to attach it to your camera.

The solar eclipse filter is designed solely for simple photography of solar eclipses or the surface of the sun. It is not suitable for general long-exposure landscape photography. A solar eclipse is such a rare and captivating phenomenon it's only natural to want to capture it in a sequence of photographs. However, when shooting a solar eclipse, even the lowest ISOs and fastest shutter speeds result in overexposed, blown-out images that fail to reflect the fascinating process.

As a result, a very strong, specialized filter is required to bring the exposure range down to manageable levels. This is where our Solar Eclipse Filter comes in. When shooting solar events this filter brings the exposure range down to manageable levels. *Not for Visual Solar Observation*
