WILLIAM F : How hot is too hot?  Can I use a 500w tungsten/incandescent light bulb?KENNETH W : I don't know.Joseph B : My recollection is Lowel allows up to 1K (1000w) lamps in the Tota fixture. I have never measured the heat coming off my lights, but it's always essential you keep an eye on any and every accessory in proximity to a bulb that hot (one of the reasons the fixtures come with screens). My opinion: the danger is less from the ordinary heat coming off the bulb (the umbrella shouldn't be that close) than what can happen if a bulb blows and there is no screen to prevent a hot fragment from hitting and setting fire to whatever may be flammable in the vicinity. I have had that happen - but not with a Tota. Don't know if that helps or not.
