This is by far the best camera bag I have ever had, it has plenty of room for all of my gear, including my tripod, and the extra pockets allow me to keep some extra items like gloves and a toboggan to keep me warm on cold days. It has room for anything I can think that I could ever need out shooting. The waist strap even fits me, which most do not, since I am a bigger guy. This is a big help hiking up mountains and makes it easier on my back. All around great bag!

I was looking for a back pack that could carry photo gear and hiking gear with equal applicability, and with the flexibility to carry varying amounts of gear. (I don't the desire to keep 4-5 different backpacks) All the packs I've found compromise one function or the other. The Lowepro Whistler 350 makes similar compromises but I decided that I would need to customize it less than the others so I bought it. It has essentially three compartments. One is the small "stuff" compartment at the top, a hiking compartment at the back exterior, and a photo compartment between the shoulder straps. This is the ideal arrangement for a hiker-photographer. The stuff compartment is shaped like an apple-wedge being 5 inches top to bottom, 10.5 inches from side to side and 5 inches from front to back. All these dimensions taper to zero at their edges. The inside surface of the flap for this compartment has a zippered pocket in the shape of a 1/3 of a circle (curve at the top, flat at the bottom), 3 inches high and 8.5 inches wide, made of mesh loosely sewn that allows seeing and grasping what is inside. It is made to hold the rain cover in a bag fastened with a clip. I removed the rain cover as its use is less frequent then the zippered pocket itself. (Note to designers - Things used less frequently should be place is less used areas of a backpack.) The photo compartment contains a removable padded box . The area without the box is 7 inches deep (front to back), 11.5 inches side to side, and 16.5 inches from top to bottom. There is no padding in the walls of the backpack but there is a stiff plastic rod that runs the perimeter of the opening for the photo compartment, maintaining its shape. The internal dimensions of the removable photo box are 7 inches deep, 10.25 inches side to side and 15 inches top to bottom. All the dividers are about 1/2 inch thick. The flap of the photo compartment is secured with a rugged zipper that opens so that the flap is "hinged" at the bottom.

Just got back from day-hiking in Prescott National Forest, Arizona—maiden journey for my Whistler 450 AW. The interior is very roomy with enough removable dividers to configure for just about anything you might want to carry. I took most of them out to fit my ready-for-anything-and-everything kit (see photo): 5D-II with Grip EF 1.4X EF 2X EF 16-35 IS w/hood EF 50 1:1.4 w/hood EF 70-200 1:4L IS (lens hood is under the 16-35 in photo) EF 100 1:2 w/hood EF 180 1:3.5L Macro w/hood 4 Filter packs (58/67/72/77), I lay them side by side across the gear before zipping shut 580 EX-II (under filter packs in photo) Pod Bean bag and Platypod TASCAM DR100mkII, substantial snacks, extra batteries and small accessories in top pocket, camera and tripod rain covers in the front pocket. Exterior had 3 liters of water on one side, tripod on the other, and rain gear in the middle. Weighed in at 33 pounds, but the shoulder, chest, and waist straps gave ample support and stability. Rain was frequent but light, never intruded inside—not sure if it would hold up to an extended heavy downpour without putting on the included rain cover which i did not use. Dirt and debris didn't seem to stick to the backpack, mud brushed off after it dried. Construction and workmanship seem to be of high quality, and given its usability, I'm rating 5 stars for now. We'll see how it holds up in future adventures, but I think I'll have this one a long time.

I recently went hiking in Iceland. Let's just put it into perspective that I rarely go hiking, let alone do an extremely challenging hike which is 30km long. The backpack endured the harsh winds, snow and rain. I had the peace of mind knowing that my gear wasn't safe and that I could focus on the task ahead of me. In another instance, I actually went off a trail because one of the trails was closed. In this trail was an extremely steep slop with a 15 foot drop at the end with rocks everywhere. I was actually losing grip going down with the backpack on my so I let go of it and it went tumbling down. When I safely got down, everything was in mint condition. The backpack is extremely durable and can withstand really tough environments and situations to fit your adventures.

The good - amazingly robust support and protection, surprisingly confortable, and the organization custimization is fantastic. The bad - HEAVY, and missing functional side pockets for water bottle or other handy items. I doubt the 450 can fit even under an international airline seat.

This backpack keeps your equipment safe. The entry point for the camera gear against your back while the pack is being worn and this keeps it well protected. There is also room for other gear making this a great day pack for long hikes. It seems rugged and well constructed. This isn't a pack for quick camera access. It is a pack for getting your camera, lenses, and other gear to the location you want to shoot. After your camera is out, you can easily shoot without removing the pack. With the waist belt and shoulder traps correctly adjusted, you may forget its on. Recommended.

I needed a bag for extended trips and enough room to hold my Sigma 150-600mm lens, and this bag does that for me, and more.

You can tell immediately when first seeing this bag that it was designed by someone that knew their stuff. Very well thought out and fit for purpose. Nice construction and build quality. I was looking for a backpack for camera gear - but also wanted it to be able to stack in or on enough gear for a few days of overnight backpacking. I transitioned a few years ago to ultra light backpacking and it's great - but now I want to start bringing my good camera and some good glass. Hard to go ultra light with high quality camera gear but no matter. With this bag I can fit my DSLR, a few lenses and strap in and on enough camping gear for a few days excursion into the high country and the fit is comfortable - and most importantly, secure. Hopefully many years of all season use are in store for this bag.

Well made. Used it on a trip to Red River Gorge. With the stuff I have loaded it's not light but the belt and shoulder straps are made/designed well enough that it was not a problem hiking around with it for a few hours. Just make sure you are using the belt to support the weight and using the shoulder straps to keep the pack close to your body.

just received the 450. Please notice the images do not shown the lens hoods. they don't fit that's why. Not the way the photos show anyway. For me, and my 1dx and 70-200 i've had to remove one of the 2 pocket dividers to be able to use the pack as featured in removing the camera with the lens and lens hood attached. imagine not having the lens hood on.... now, you'll have to dig into the bag. Well that doesn't work either. theres no room still if you want to pack this thing as shown. you'll have to remove your lens hoods, or remove one of the gray dividers or stash the lens hoods elsewhere. Fit. I would agree this is a camera bag that can be used as a backpack. The hip belt is made for very large people and just fits my hips (35 waist). The box inside rests on the top of the curve of my lower spine and I wonder how long before this becomes a problem. The 350 pack is 2 inches shorted and probably will fit me better. I'm thinking the 350 with one of the dividers removed will work just the same as this one and maybe better for movement and fit for the action environment i play in. www.iwasphotographed.com Great looking pack, well made.

I love this camera bag! The design is amazing. I attach my tripod to the bag with the orange straps and secure the straps over two of the legs letting the other leg rest above the straps. I have never had my tripod fall from this bag like I have with other bags that have the leg pouch. It easily fits my Nikon D800E along with my Nikon 24-70mm F2.8 lens, my Nikon 105mm F2.8 lens, and my Nikon 200-500mm F5.6 lens. I even have room for polarizers, remote shutters, and accessories in the main compartment. The inside flap holds all of my memory cards, each pouch can hold up to two memory cards. The zipper compartment below the memory card pouches holds all my batteries, I have 5 of those, plus the body cap. The pouch on top holds my gps, lens cleaner and pen, flashlights, and a snack or gloves for the long treks. The waterproof compartment is a great compartment where I store my rain gear in case it is going to rain that day. There is definitely much much more you can attach to the bag on the outside. Lots of tie down points. The suspension system doesnt even make the bag feel heavy which is great! Quality is excellent and design is great! I would buy again!

I've bought small backpacks, sling bags, messenger bags and have even put a camera backpack in the suitcase while carrying a big camera / laptop bag on an airplane. I've been looking years for a backpack that I can over-stuff with all my gear laptop included and carry it on the airplane. When arriving at my destination and settling, use it out in the field carrying only the pieces I need. This is it! If there's any fault with this bag, I tend to overload it just BECAUSE I CAN. I don't have any complaints and have another smaller Lowepro bag that I also like very much. Durability is great, flexibility is also great. I can now use my suitcase for clothes and other travel essentials not another backpack!

I bought this for taking my photo gear into the backcountry. Top quality build and well thought out for carrying skis, snowboard, etc. A major flaw is not having more flexible gear storage options. The entire interior of the pack is taken up by padded dividers, leaving little room for other essential gear I.e. Clothing, This is way too much for my mirrorless kit now. Have returned it. If I were toting large pro dslr and big lenses, I would have kept it. Lowepro should offer smaller camera gear divider options and this would be a five star keeper.

Great for the outdoors, especially when the weather isn't. The pack is very durable and my equipment was kept safe and dry from the elements. I will be bringing this to the Philippines for 3 weeks for the ultimate test.

It fits my super telephoto tamron 150-600 my canon 70-300 my 10-80 my 18-135 and my 50 mm prime and my camera body with a battery extension. I really like this bag, I just wish there were a couple extra pockets and that they would have used water proof materials on the sides of the bag like they did everywhere else. I also wish the hip straps were detachable.

I just picked up the BP 350 AW and have been very impressed. The build and feature set show good attention to detail, just like my previous Lowe products. It's very comfortable when in place and it carries quite a bit of gear (so far I put a D500 with 70-300, 16-80, 85, 35 and a flash in it, with room left over). The only downside for me is the wait belt. It doesn't sit at the right height for my frame (5' 10" male with medium build), and there is no to adjust it up or down. And it can't be removed, which is my preferred solution. After I've had it awhile I may work up the courage to cut it off, but for now I just have it buckled backwards around the pack. Recommended!

Will most definitely keep all your gear safe and dry. Some zippers and pockets are hard to open.

I was on the fence of whether to get this pack or the 450AW version. My primary use is taking my camera gear to the cliffs/mountains/slopes/etc and also to act as a convenient storage area when at home. As such I wanted all my gear to fit into one bag, and then take out the items I don't need, and head off into the backcountry. My kit includes: Nikon d750 camera body, 24-120 kit lens, a 14-24, a 70-200, a 50, an 80, an SB-700 flash, plus an assortment of accessories (including space for a tripod head). When all that is in there, it's filled to the brim, with only the slim front pocket available for other items like water, food, and extra clothing. Regardless of what camera gear I decide to pack, there isn't a ton of room for other outdoor gear. In this respect, I slightly regret not getting the bigger version. Being an outdoor pack, I think it should be a little easier to also pack along all those other necessities, so that took a star off my rating. The fit is the reason that I took another star off. I'm tall and skinny (6'3", 170 lbs), but the torso length of the pack is kinda short, yet the waist belt is huge. Having a short torso/backpanel length makes it so if I adjust the bag to sit on my hips, the shoulder straps are extended so far that the pack hangs away from my back, and thus not that comfy on my shoulders. If I adjust it for my shoulders, not enough weight can be put onto my waist because it sits above my waistline. In regard to the waist belt, I can't tighten it any further, and it's just barely tight enough to take some weight off my shoulders. I realize there needs to be extra room for when you have layers of winter clothing on, but the waist belt is borderline unusably short if you have thin clothing on and have a smaller waist (I wear like a 31"pant). The construction and layout of the bag is very good and makes it easier to live with the above concerns and a worthwhile outdoor camera pack to look into. In the end, I would say try it on if you can before buying, and assess how much space you need to decide between the 350 and 450..

We bought this bag to carry an extensive micro-4/3rds camera system hiking in Iceland. We liked that it would have room for several lenses, filters, and two camera bodies - plus some hiking gear. We also liked the waterproof layer between the outer stuff pocket and the camera gear. The bag has room for LOTS of camera gear. This would be perfect if we had DSLR gear - but it's not the answer to our micro 4/3rds system - the bag is 1-2 inches too deep, and the extra space is wasted room that can't be compressed or filled with other items. The construction of the bag is very sturdy - I bet it would stand up to some serious abuse and keep your gear safe and dry. However, I found the tough exterior uncomfortable - it's hard to get the camera compartment in and out, the fabric is rough on my skin, and the bag straps are uncomfortable. I also found that while my husband (5'11, 210 lbs) could carry the bag comfortably, it just didn't fit me at all - 5'4, 135 lbs. Even tightened all the way down, the waist strap was a little bit loose. The backpack straps rubbed so I had to have the chest strap on tightly to keep them away from my arms. Backpacks aren't one size fits all - and this one is meant for a bigger person. Lastly, we were looking for a bag that could carry camera gear and some backpacking gear too (rain gear, swim suits, snacks/waterbottles for our family) - and this bag is really meant to just carry camera gear. There's a little bit of room for other things - enough for one person if you fill it up - but it doesn't work if you want to carry stuff for a family and your camera gear. So all in all, this bag is probably perfect for someone with an extensive DSLR kit who also wants to take a rain jacket, water bottle, and some snacks. But it's not the niche bag we were looking for.

Lots of Room!
By Papeetepete
I needed a bag for extended trips and enough room to hold my Sigma 150-600mm lens, and this bag does that for me, and more.
A true, all-season and versatile pack, the Whistler BP 450 AW delivers amazing performance for wilderness photographers and adventurers. Born on the side of a mountain, Lowepro's Whistler pack delivers amazing performance for wilderness photographers and adventurers who carry an equal measure of camera, video and functional outdoor gear. Inventie and technical, this alpine pack is reminiscent of their brand heritage and the adventures that led founder Greg Lowe to create a carry solution for his passions.
This pack was designed and tested by professional photographers, including Whistler shooter Paul Morrison, in the extreme conditions of the Coast Mountains of British Columbia, Canada.
ActivZone harness system provides targeted padding and support for comfort on the move.
Pack includes a detachable All Weather AW Cover to deploy as needed and protect valuable gear from rain, snow, dust and sand.
Professional photographer Paul Morrison suggested they add a hinged back panel/zipper for partial or full access to gear; so they did. This hinged back is a handy feature for reaching gear in inclement weather.
A very roomy front pocket expands to fit alpine essentials. A waterproof barrier separates wet gear from the main compartment (drain holes at bottom).
The top pocket is designed with a high-visibility orange interior. Includes a zippered pocket with built-in key leash.
Main camera/video gear compartment includes their exclusive MaxFit system of customizable dividers, designed for fine-tuning of fit and maximum capacity.
The main compartment /insert is removable so you can dry out the pack between adventures.
Attach heavy gear like skis, ice tools or a pro tripod to the sides of the pack and still have access to the main compartment; the rigid internal structure is built to support this type of gear.
Multiple attachment points make it easy to expand capacity and add trekking poles, a snowboard or other essentials to the front of the pack.
Durable, weather-resistant and resilient outdoor-tech materials and hardware include 420 denier ripstop nylon with TUP face coating, glove-friendly Nifco side-release buckles, all-metal Duraflex hooks and Hypalon base.
