This is a good filter and well made of aluminum ring and fittings. The filter shows the sun as anywhere from an orange orb telescopically to a bright yellow white with the right exposure on a camera. The "glass" appears to be, yes, glass, coated with a silver mirror like material. I purchased this for use on a Nikon 600mm lens, unfortunately it is about 1-1/4 to 1-1/2 inches too large, even with the fitting screws. I will have to compensate with foam or felt to get a tight fit. Meade's next size down, #712, appears to be a touch too small and is out of stock anyway at Meade. Very thin ring of distortion around the sun appears in all my images so far. I'm keeping it, as it's the best fit, well made and was available before the 8/21/17 solar eclipse.

Joe, which Nikon 500mm f/4 are you using? I will be using the older MF Nikkor Ai-P lens.Does this filter fit snugly, or did you have to shim or add foam to it? What's the inside depth? What's the depth from the inside front to the set screws? If you also have the Ai-P, what camera are you using it with? II am a Canon guy; I know how to make that work. However, I have been looking at other adaptable cameras that have In-Body Image Stabilization. I'm worried about vibrations from my clock drive affecting longer exposures. Any other tips you can offer will be appreciated.

I bought this for the upcoming Solar Eclipse and have done a few test shots that I am quite happy with. I am putting this on the end of my Nikon 500mm F4 lens.
