GREAT EYEPIECE THAT RIVALS THE EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE UWAs!

I OWN FOUR OF THESE MARVELOUS MEADE UWA EYEPIECES. THE 5.5MM, 8.8MM, 14MM AND THE 20MM. ALL OF THEM ARE MADE EXTREMELY WELL AND PROVIDE A TACK SHARP IMAGE ACROSS THE ENTIRE 82MM AFoV. EYE RELIEF IS PLENTIFUL AND THE EDGE OF THE FIELD IS SHARP AND WELL DEFINED. I COULD PAY HUNDREDS MORE FOR THIS 5.5MM AND NOT HAVE ANYTHING MORE THAN A NAME TO SHOW FOR IT, THIS IS, AND THE SET THAT I OWN ARE JUST THAT GOOD! THEY'RE GREAT! THEY ARE ALSO WATERPROOF AND THAT KEEPS ANY DEW ON THE OUTSIDE NEVER TO COLLECT AND BECOME A PROBLEM INTERNALLY. WHEN YOU RAISE THE EYECUP, AT THE BASE OF THE EYEPIECE IS A GREASED SEAL. THIS IS NOT AN ISSUE WITH ME AND ONLY ENSURES THAT THE EYEPIECE IS FULLY WATERPROOF. THIS MIGHT HAVE BEEN OBVIATED WITH A FOLD DOWN RUBBER EYEGUARD BUT REGARDLESS, IT ISN'T AN ISSUE FOR ME. IT ISN'T IN AN AREA WHERE YOU GRAB THE EYEPIECE WHEN SWITCHING THEM OUT. MY WIFE, WHO WEARS GLASSES HAS NO DIFFICULTY SEEING THE ENTIRE FOV THROUGH THIS AND THE OTHER MEADE SERIES 5000 UWA EYEPIECES. I'D GLADLY BUY THE TWO LONGER EYEPIECES BUT THE FOCUSING LIMITS OF MY SCOPES WOULD REQUIRE EXTENSIONS TO DO SO. I HAVE THEM BUT WITH SUCH A WIDE FIELD OF VIEW, THE 20MM SEEMS TO DO IT. A GOOD TEST I USED TO SEE HOW WELL CORRECTED THESE ARE FROM EDGE TO EDGE WAS TO PUT THESE TO TEST IN MY GSO 8" F:5 WITH A GSO COMA CORRECTOR. 95% OF THE FIELD SHOWED NO DISTORTION WHATSOEVER. THE MINOR OFF AXIS COMA AT THE VERY EDGE WAS VIRTUALLY UNNOTICED. IN MY CLASSIC F:12 CASSEGRAINS THESE TELL YOU WITH ONE LONG GLANCE WHAT AN INCREDIBLE EYEPIECE(S) THIS AND THE OTHERS IN THE SERIES ARE. I'VE OWNED EYEPIECES COSTING 3X AS MUCH AND THERE IS NO VISUAL DIFFERENCE, AND I'VE BEEN LOOKING THROUGH EVERY KIND OF SCOPE AND EYEPIECE YOU CAN IMAGINE FOR OVER 50 YEARS NOW!

FABULOUS UWA EYEPIECE!!

I have always liked Meade eyepieces and was not hesitant to increase my eyepiece collection with their Series 5000, UWA 20mm, 14mm, 8.8mm and 5.5mm. I've used this (these) in several of my telescopes now from a fast reflector to a large classical cassegrain. I have been an amateur astronomer for over 50 years now so have a good grasp on what is good and what isn't. These are all stellar performers. Using the 20mm in my 8" f:5 GSO with a GSO coma corrector yielded pinpoint stars across 95% of the very flat field. Contrast was outstanding and there were no stray internal reflections thanks to Meade's design. And, there was no internal dust whatsoever, one of my personal pet peeves. Further, The 82 degree AFoV was clean, sharp and crisp and easy to see even with glasses on. I have TVs that I have used and this rivals those that cost $ or more! Some people have issues with the grease seal at the base of the eyepiece that makes it waterproof. I never get my fingers even close to it so it isn't an issue for me. You can't go wrong with Adorama. Try one if you have a need, you'll never send it back! Same with the other UWA in this series noted above!

BEST EYEPIECE I'VE EVER OWNED AND 55 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE!

This is one of 3 Meade UWA series 5000 eyepieces I have purchased from Adorama. First, Adorama is the best both pricewise and in assuring that what I receive is of the highest quality with extremely fast shipping and professional packaging. Now for the eyepiece. I read a lot of reviews on Cloudy Nights. Many users suggested wide field curvature with this 14mm eyepiece. I had recently purchased this but only had a chance to use it tonight. I figured the ultimate test of yea or nay was using it with my 8" f:5 GSO reflector...a great scope from Taiwan, not the Chinese mainland. I also purchased the 20mm and the 5.5mm and my wife is sure to get me the 8.8mm for Christmas. So, my first wonder was will it focus in this scope using a GSO coma corrector and does extreme field curvature truly exist as many claimed on CN? The eyepiece is extremely well made and corrected. No internal dust, perfect in everyway cosmetically. I inserted it in the 2" corrector after removing a 3" 32mm eyepiece, a different mfg. but SWA with a 70 degree AFV. The focus was very close to the same. A slight racking in on the Crayford focuser and the facts were evidently clear. NO COMA EVEN TO THE EDGE. NO FIELD CURVATURE AND A VERY FLAT FIELD FILLED WITH 82 DEGREES OF PINPOINT STARS IN OUTSTANDING DETAIL. In and out of focus the GSO's star images were perfect, even on the edges of the eyepiece! For those who say this eyepiece has field curvature...they are obviously using an inferior scope to mine and that's a fact. I have a number of scopes from Newts to MAKS to Cassegrains and my only limitation is with the Cassegrains where the 20mm UWA is nearing the limit on back focus with a 20mm. With the 14mm UWA being reviewed, no problems at all. I have used TVs and for the money this is a certifiable bargain! 4x less than the TV and NO discernible difference whatsoever. If you must have a TV or other uppity eyepiece collection, at least to me, you are only paying for the name. I was drawn to Meade eyepieces 30 years ago with their new at the time SWA series. They were wonderful, so I took a gamble and got this and others described. If you want a fabulous view, second to none and at the best price and service possible, I wholeheartedly recommend this and the other UWA 5000 Meade's. And, the eye relief was so good that I didn't even need to extend the eye shield. My wife wears glasses and it was easy for her to see the 82 degree field stop with glasses on. Amazing eyepieces!!! Amazing seller!!! Get them while they're still priced so reasonably!!

GREAT HIGH POWER EYEPIECE

I have no regrets, making this purchase. Th 82 degree view is incredible. When used to view the moon, it shows the moon in almost a three dimensional appearance. The eye relief is extremally comfortable. I get very sharp images, of the moon and planets. A lot of people complain about the grease used by Meade. I just wipe any excess grease off, with a paper towel. Problem solved.

Excellent EP for the money

Excellent glass, easy to find and handle, lovely FOV at 82 degrees. Sharp across most of the field, with minimal distortion at the edge. Eyecup design requires rotation of the eyepiece against the lower extension tube (1.25), revealing a black anodized tube that has lubrication. The only downside to this design is that it's common to forget about the lubrication and get it on your fingers. If you can get over this design element, it's the best lens in the 82 degree 7 element non-ED class at this price-point.

Enjoyable

I really like this eyepiece. I would recommend it. I'll probably buy another. The field of view is great. Size and, weight great for the quality. If it had an eye shield it would be perfect.
