Shopper : My 9 year old son said he wanted a telescope for Christmas is this a good starter telescope? I know nothing about telescopes.DENIS W : Dear Shopper, It's funny that you have been directed to me since I own a Meade ETX-80-BB Backpack Observatory Telescope, which is NOT appropriate for a 9 year old, it requires a little more technical knowledge of celestial measurements, since it has a computer. A 9 year old could learn it, if he applied himself, then it would be a great telescope, depending on his learning spirit. As for the 50AZ-P 2.0/50mm, it's a great scope for kids to learn and explore; easy to use viewfinder, and just enough magnification to satisfy a 9 year old. Pair this telescope with a night sky planisphere for your correct latitude(google it) and he will have the tools to do some real celestial observation, or some neighborhood snooping! Hope this helps! Merry ChristmasAARON S : Hi, I am an amateur astronomer enthusiast with over 30 telescopes in my arsenal. I would personally avoid anything made by Meade right now as they are having major issues with their construction and quality control. I would seriously consider buying a telescope at this price point from the maker Celestron. Such as this one: http://www.adorama.com/CNT70.html If Adorama can't get it for you before X-mas, you know that website named for a jungle in South America can. =) With a 70MM telescope, such as the one linked above, your son will be able to see up the close the craters of the Moon and he will be able to see the rings of Saturn and possibly the Great Red Spot of Jupiter! Plus, the most beautiful view the Orion Nebula and all its colorful glory. But, save him the frustration of buying a Meade product right now. Your welcome =)DAN D : It really depends on your expectations. If you want a marginal scope for minimal money so that it doesn't hurt so bad if it is destroyed, then this is it. The mount is really unstable and the optics aren't generally better than a decent pair of 10x50 binoculars. But it will give you decent views of the Moon. I would not expect satisfactory views of any of the planets. But with this kind of telescope the interest in astronomy typically quickly evaporates and the scope is thrown away or sold used. Personally, I'd rather have a good pair of 10x50 binoculars with fully multi-coated optics. Adorama sells quite a few very good telescopes which will delight the user for a long time. This is not one of those.LAWRENCE K : You should get him the Meade 114EQ-ASTR 4.5" (114mm) f/8 Reflector. t is a great starter scope, inexpensive, easy to use and real quality.
