Questions & Answers

Shane W : I am a newbie to telescopes. I am looking for a computerised / GOTO, entry level scope for myself (and the kids - hence the GOTO function). The two I am comparing are the MEADE STAR NAVIGATOR 130mm REFLECTOR vs CELESTRON NEXSTAR 130SLT. Any simple, plain english feedback on either of these scopes and/or a comparison between them would be much appreciated? Cheers ShaneHAROLD T : I bought a celesrton about 2 years ago. My family has really enjoyed the ease of use with this telescope. We use the goto features all the time. Once the telescope is oriented to the sky ( which is done by finding any 3 bright objects in the night sky an entering the time where you are located) the remote gives you tons of options for celestial bodies in view, then it moves to whichever you select. Also, you can search for specific bodies by using the remote. Very user friendly interface. Over all, we have been very happy with our purchase.CANDY C : I wish I could help but the Celestron was the very first telescope I ever bought. I know nothing about telescopes! What I was super frustrated with is that the user's manual that came with my telescope was a generic one, not for my EXACT model. Being a newbie, some things were very hard to figure out. When I finally took it out to a field to program it, the settings disappeared the very next time I turned it on to use it. I live in a city, so I've not had the opportunity in over a year to take it out again to try and program the settings. I would say this is not a good telescope for a beginner. It's also very bulky to carry around. I'm terrified of breaking it every time I take it outside due to the size. Hope this helps some! CandyNADIA R : I do not know about the Meade Star Navigator just the Celestron. The Celestron is great is focus and computerize. If is for the kids take into account the computerize. You need to indicate in the computer what is that you going to focus on. I don't know if this will be confusing for them or not. So if the Meade Star Navigator is not computerize then probably you should decide which one will give them a more GOTO function. What ever is best for the kids is always good especially for their understanding and being fun. Hope this helps a little.
Shopper : can you operate this telescope portably on batteries?ANDREW R : The mount is powered from the included internal battery pack which holds eight (user supplied) "AA" batteries.
Ron H : With interest in buying the StarNavigator 130(ending with "S"), the on-line instruction manual specifications state that the tube length is 18" and the focal length is 1000mm. My knowledge would say that this is physically impossible and the the most the focal length could be is about 500mm. How can Meade put 1000mm (~39") into an 18" tube?? By comparison the instruction manual specs for the StarNavigator 130 (without the "S") specify a 38" (965mm) tube, which is doaable and makes sense to me. So... based on percieved magnification, do you think that you have a 1000mm fL or a 500mm? Thanks, Ron - Mount Airy, MDANDREW R : I'm not sure I understand your question. Meade's own description of this model number: "The StarNavigator 130mm reflecting telescope features a lens diameter of 130mm (5.1") for clear, bright images and a focal length of 1000mm; focal ratio f/7.7" We do not appear to offer an "S" model of this telescope.
