This zoom eyepiece is solidly made and works just as it is supposed to. Great for grab-n-go sessions when I want a quick look at the night sky with my ST80. It works well for all of my scopes (180mm f/15 mak-cass, 127mm f/6.5 achro refractor, 102mm f/9.8 achro refractor, 80mm f/5 achro refractor, and 80mm f/7 apo refractor). Many say the Celestron zoom is better (I haven't used it before), but the Meade works fine for me.

For the price of this eyepiece, I am very pleased. FOV, focus, eye relief, and usefulness are very good. There are compromises with all of the above vs any single premium eyepiece, but one has to remember it’s cost and purpose. It is a good piece of equipment to figure out what eyepiece to get next when you are starting out in astronomy. My only complaint is that the zoom function is a little tight. Maybe it will loosen with time.

I am a novice with a Meade Infinity telescope. This lens made a world of difference to me. The kit lenses had such a small field of vision that I would loose the object when I switched to a higher magnification, plus it was difficult juggling three lenses in the dark. I was able to view Jupiter, it's four moons, and I was able to make out the stripes on Jupiter. It was a huge improvement over the kit lenses. The barrel was a bit stiff to rotate but not a huge problem. It is rugged too. I dropped it and there was no damage.

I wanted to use this in a light refractor for an easy grab and go for travel. I then got a deal on a set of Meade 4000 Super Plossls. Though the zoom has worked well and is convenient to use, I still like the individual eyepieces the best. I will also keep this zoom, however, though I wouldn't rate it up there with zooms that cost a little more. For the price it does do the job and I don't think you'd find one better in this price range.

For years zoom eyepieces were regarded as "convenient," but without the optical resolution required in demanding astronomical applications. The Meade Series 4000 Zoom Eyepiece has changed that impression completely and forever.
Because, finally, this is a zoom eyepiece designed for the advanced amateur astronomer who is uncompromising in his or her optical performance specifications. Performance is fully consistent with the finest fixed focal length eyepieces.
The Meade Series 4000 Zoom is an excellent addition to telescopes of all types, brands, and price levels, whether 60mm refractor, 8" Dobsonian, 90mm ETX, or 12" LX200 Schmidt Cassegrain. Conceived by one of the world's leading designers of photo optical instruments, this 7 element system provides an apparent field of 40° at the 24mm setting, increasing continuously to a 55° field at 8mm. The internal zoom optics move on smooth, precisely machined surfaces which maintain optical collimation at all zoom settings. A scale graduated in 1mm units indicates the zoom focal length in operation. All lenses are multi coated for maximum light transmission and image contrast, while minimizing internal reflections. The chromed brass barrel is threaded for filters.
