It is not a good sequencer, but that?s not its point. It doesn?t have a great preset system, also not the point. It a truly analog system. And it has a bit of a learning curve. But if you call Moog directly, they will walk you through EVERYTHING. All over the phone. Just make sure to write your questions down very specifically, because there is a lot of nuance involved. If you don?t have a musical ear, this will frustrate you. It doesn?t make songs, or even harmonious sounds. It makes all the sounds. You have to literally dial into the music. And it?s hard to recreate, if possible at all, so record record record. I love it so much.

With the Moog Mother-32 Semi-Modular Synthesizer, musicians and sound designers can explore a new realm of sonic possibilities. As Moog's first tabletop semi-modular synthesizer, the Mother-32 stands out with its distinctive analog sound, seamless sequencing, and extensive interconnectivity, making it an essential addition to any electronic or modular setup. Handcrafted in Asheville, NC, this synthesizer is meticulously engineered to offer a diverse array of creative tools, inspiring the creation of new music and unique sounds while facilitating endless sonic exploration.
Encased in a rugged extruded aluminum enclosure with elegant wood sides, the Mother-32 is built to withstand the rigors of live performance and studio production. It features a voltage-controlled 32-step sequencer with 64 sequence locations, allowing for intricate musical compositions. The synthesizer is equipped with Moog's iconic low pass and high pass Ladder Filter, covering a frequency range of 20Hz to 20kHz with voltage-controlled resonance, providing that classic Moog sound.
The Mother-32 includes a definitive Moog oscillator with dual outputs for Pulse and Sawtooth waveforms, and a wide-range LFO capable of audio-rate modulation. Its 5-pin MIDI input and MIDI to CV conversion capabilities ensure seamless integration with other MIDI devices. The synthesizer also offers an external audio input for processing external sound sources, expanding its versatility.
A standout feature is the modular patchbay, boasting 32 patch points that enable complex synthesis and sound design. The assignable CV jack, with 16 assignable sources, further enhances its flexibility. The semi-modular design requires no patching for immediate music creation, making it user-friendly for both beginners and seasoned musicians.
The Mother-32 is a superb companion to other Moog instruments like the Werkstatt-01 and Minitaur, and its main module can be easily transferred into a Eurorack skiff or case. For those looking to expand their setup, optional 2 and 3 Tier kits allow for vertical mounting of multiple units, providing a complete solution for new Eurorack users without the need for additional items.
The dual-mode 32-step sequencer offers 64 sequence locations and various performance modes. In KB Mode, the keyboard is used for playing, entering sequence data, and transposing sequences. In Step Mode, it functions as the step sequencer interface, enabling step muting, note data updates, and sequence bank selection. Each sequence step can include note value, gate length, rest, accent, glide, and ratchet count, allowing for up to four note-repeats within a single note duration.
The sequencer panel controls include tempo, swing, run/stop, hold, and reset, with control inputs for tempo, run/stop (also used for sync), reset, and hold. Control outputs include KB, gate, and accent pulse. The assignable output offers multipurpose control with 16 available functions, such as sequencer accent, clock divisions, decimated waveforms, stepped random, MIDI note on velocity, and various MIDI control changes.
The Moog Mother-32 Semi-Modular Synthesizer is a powerful tool for musicians seeking to expand their creative horizons, offering a rich palette of sounds and an intuitive interface that invites exploration and innovation.
