I love the 20" C-stand. It is excellent with the column just slightly extended but I disagree with people who want to use it as a main stand. The riser sections get wobbly at full extension and I didn't buy C-stands to have wobble. If you keep the risers at LESS THAN HALF extension the stand is much stiffer. That gives you a working height of around 3.5ft with the gobo arm raising or lowering from there. This is just below the min height of a 40" C-stand so it makes sense. A few thoughts: If you want a medium length c-stand riser a 24" riser provides 12" more total height than a 20" and a 30" riser provides 19" more total height. One drawback with this model is that the 20" arm really limits versatility so be sure to have a 40" arm also. Also, black arms suck for most everything. The ends are really hard to see sticking out, they are slippery, the paint scratches, and they look terrible in front of a diffuser which is where I use most of mine. I like my stands black and my arms stainless. In the attached photo I use the stand as the bottom half of a classic clamshell lighting setup. Instead of a reflector I'm using a ring flash with a 50" modifier. The combo of stand and arm let's me slide the light right in under the subject's waist.

The term 'Century Stand' goes back to the early days of motion picture production. Before there was artificial lighting the stages would revolve to allow for continuous overhead lighting from the sun. Large reflectors would be positioned to bounce or kick the overhead light up onto the stage and illuminate the set and actors. These reflectors were made in many sizes but it seems the most popular was the 100 inch, or 'century', sized reflector. In later years, studios, grips and gaffers began to manufacture the earliest versions of what we now call C-Stands. The original C-Stands had welded bases that did not fold up or adjust but the fact that they easily nested together made them invaluable on the stage. Century Stands, or 'C' stands, are an important component in the image maker's arsenal of tools.
These popular stands are available in many different configurations, lengths and finishes. The unique staggered leg design allows C-Stands to be nested and therefore be placed extremely close to one another on set. The lower leg can also be slid under many objects. The sliding leg allows for use on stairs, off curbs and even as high as a desk or countertop. Fast, easy opening and closing.
