With an inexpensive tube cutter and 5/32" allen wrench you can easily disassemble, cut down, and reassemble this stand extension to make it shorter. It also helps to have a small file for removing any burs. You simply have to cut a uniform amount off of each tube section. Unfortunately, you will have to cut off the flared end on the smallest tube which prevents it from being over extended, yet the flared ends for all other tube sections can be left intact by simply cutting the opposite non-flared ends. In my case I needed to mount a teleprompter approximately 17 inches plus or minus a few inches above the top of a sit stand desk, and could not find an appropriate tripod after a great deal of searching. All the tripods were either too tall, too short, were not adjustable within the range needed, or couldn't handle the weight. A combination of an 18" round board from Home Depot, a Mathews mounting plate with a 5/8" receiver, a Manfrotto 208 3/8" head mounting plate, and the modified Matthews telescopic baby stand extension did the trick. I ended up shortening the stand extension twice, as I didn't cut enough off the first time. My decision to attach the mounting plate with bolts and washers required a slight countersink on the underside of the board to make room for them. Wood screws might have been just as secure, and would certainly have been quicker.

I bought these so I didn't have to carry larger light stands for shooting model home exteriors. They're light but very strong and take up very little space. I also plan on using them as a boom arm. As usual, Matthews products never disappoint.

Wow, I couldn't wait to try out my new, ADORAMA supplied, Mathews Extendable Baby Stand Extension, 16" to 50", in the field so I set up a rig at home just to see how it would work for me. I must say that it surpassed all expectations I had for such a device. It extended just as advertised! It fit well in collapsed form for transport. It even matched my existing color scheme for similar devices... black. I'll buy another if I ever see a need for more! OK, Good Luck

OK - How much do I love these (I bought two)? I love them a lot. I travel with compact light stands - the type where the legs fold backwards and up against the stand. The fit in a 22" roll-aboard. Anyway, great stands and pretty tall for most applications. On my last job abroad, I knew the I'd be shooting some interiors with really high ceilings and that 'd need to get my lights higher in order to get as much bounce as possible. These extensions totally solved the challenge. And they're incredibly easy to travel with. They're smaller than a monopod and, in pinch, can substitute for a boom pole. Highly recommend.
