It's a work horse. Solid and well constructed - it holds lights and softboxes with ease. I never see any bending or swaying. So happy I got it.

I've dragged these stands across the country and hung a ton of different things on them. Lights, boom poles, flags, cameras, and monitors. They haven't sagged or lost their grip. Two years of almost daily use inspired me to buy more of them. There's a reason they're the standard.

I needed a C-stand to hold lights and other equipment with more versatility than a standard light stand. Since Matthews is a very reputable brand, I chose them for peace of mind when it comes to the safety of people on-set as well as equipment. Somewhat disappointingly, the black finish seems to crackle easily, although so far it hasn't posed any issues with my final images. It's worth noting that these are my first and only C-stands. As such, I am unable to compare them to other products and am unsure as to whether other black C-stands exhibit this same problem. Overall, they fulfill their function well, and they feel nice and stable when properly weighted and balanced.

This thing is a tank. I went with Matthews because I know the reliability of their products and have seen these in action when they’ve clearly been through battle....and they still keep ticking. Anything can work and look nice when it’s new. These are built to last.

We got 6 of these stands for our high school digital photography classes and they are holding up well! These are heavy enough to support strobes with heavy light banks on them as well as seemless background paper back to back in order to have 2 sets running at the same time. Easy to use, easy to adjust. The black paint is holding up well although we haven't had to move or transport them a lot yet. The name Matthews is synonymous with being well and a classic traditional stand. Don't hesitate to buy these if you need some reliable, heavier stands! (The price has gone up significantly though since 1/2015 without the discount) :-(

I actually bought this stand by mistake, I wanted to buy the full size stand. After unpacking it, I realized this stand easily will fit in a standard suitcase. You can actually fit two or three even and be under the 50 pound weight limit. Great if you do portraits in other states.

This is the best purchase I've made in a long time. Being familiar with Matthews C-stands, I knew what to expect, but I still was wow'ed when I unpacked it. Good for low height, and adjustable leg (which is super easy to lock down). That leg is handy in small studio space or outdoors where the terrain is uneven. The only con is that Matthews is more expensive than Avenger which I've never used, ... maybe I'll try an Avenger next time. In any case, I know I can count on Matthews for being solid and durable.

A total beast

In 1974 Matthews Studio Equipment introduced the industry's first folding base C-Stand. (C-Stand and Century Stand are registered trademarks of Matthews Studio Equipment, Inc.) Matthews now produces a wide range of C-Stands and related accessories to assist the motion picture, television and photographic professional in lighting and lighting modification support.
The term 'Century Stand' goes back to the early days of motion picture production. Before there was artificial lighting the stages would revolve to allow for continuous overhead lighting from the sun. Large reflectors would be positioned to bounce or kick the overhead light up onto the stage and illuminate the set and actors. These reflectors were made in many sizes, but it seems the most popular was the 100 inch, or 'century', sized reflector. In later years, studios, grips and gaffers began to manufacture the earliest versions of what we now call C-Stands. The original C-Stands had welded bases that did not fold up or adjust but the fact that they easily nested together made them invaluable on the stage. Century Stands, or 'C' stands, are an important component in the image maker's arsenal of tools.
These popular stands are available in many different configurations, lengths and finishes. The unique staggered leg design allows C-Stands to be nested and therefore be placed extremely close to one another on set. The lower leg can also be slid under many objects. The C+ offers a removable base for the risers, making disassembly for travel simple and easy without being cumbersome or having the awkwardness typical of other manufacturers. The sliding leg allows for use on stairs, off curbs and even as high as a desk or countertop. Patents applied for and pending. Fast, easy opening and closing.
