Works great, but keep settings in mind

I bought this adapter new, with a used Metz 40 MZ-2i that I bought at the same time from Adorama's used items department. It makes the flash a perfect TTL slave with a flash such as the Metz 54 MZ 3/4 which offer TTL master flash capability. You must set the switch on the SCA unit to the appropriate setting, or else there is no response to the TTL master. If you are using a flash that doesn't have TTL master control capability (such as the 45 CL-4 digital), then you can still use this as a slave with the "auto" setting. Then, the slave flash's output is regulated by the slave flash's photocell. You need to set the SCA's switch to a single lightning bolt symbol in this case. Also, set your desired aperture on the slave flash unit. This is all explained in the SCA unit manual, but it is confusing. I'm giving you the bottom line here!

Great optical slave

Very sensitive, much better than the $20[...] and noname optical slaves. Allows automatic flash if you have 2 Metz units, although doesn't have ability to portion the amount of light between the 2 units (in auto mode). Works great, but kinda pricey.

About Metz MZ53083 SCA 3083 Flash Activate Digital Slave Unit

The SCA 3083 Digital offers a choice of three different slave modes.
1/ Slave Trigger Function for Creative Lighting
This mode allows any Metz flash that uses the SCA3002, SCA3000, and SCA 300 system to be used externally in manual or automatic mode to add light to dark areas of a scene. The slave can be triggered by any light pulse.
2/ Slave Trigger Function with Pre-Flash Suppression
For digital cameras without a flash connection (hot shoe or PC connection) which works with a monitor pre-flash. This prevents accidental firing of the flash until the camera is ready to take the picture. The SCA 3083 will communicate when to fire with the Metz flash from the built-in camera flash.
3/ Cordless TTL or Automatic Flash Control Slave Mode
In this instance, no setting on the slave flash is needed. You just need a Metz controlling flash connected to the camera. The controlling flash will communicate to the slave flash or multiple slave units. The SCA 3083 digital slave adapter evaluates the signals from the controlling flash, then the slave flash will fire at the right moment with the precise light output.
Requires the #5592 SCA3000C Cord to connect to 45 CL-1, CL-4, and 60 CT-4 Flashes
