The Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S II Lens is the second version of one of Nikon's most popular and versatile lenses, and it offers upgraded weather resistance, improved autofocus performance, a slightly lighter weight, and an internal zoom design, making it the world's first 24-70mm f/2.8 with internal zoom. This lens holds the spot as the mid-range zoom in Nikon's holy trinity. The trio of lenses is: the NIKKOR Z 14-24mm f/2.8, the NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S II, and the NIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8.
While the Mark II version of this lens has received many substantial upgrades, perhaps none is more important than the internal zoom. It is the world's first 24-70mm f/2.8 internal zoom, which benefits creators in numerous ways. First, the internal design helps the lens shave off 4.5oz and 0.5" from its fully extended predecessor. Internal zoom also helps improve the lens's weather resistance, enhancing reliability in adverse weather conditions. Finally, video shooters will appreciate the internal design, which reduces shifts in the center of gravity during zooming, improving ease of use when shooting on a gimbal.

Nikon has opted to use their highly acclaimed Silky Swift VCM Autofocus in the NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S II Lens, the very first zoom lens to utilize this autofocus system. Instead of the traditional method of using gears to adjust focus, this system utilizes magnets to move focus more quickly and smoothly. It enables a 5x faster focusing speed than the predecessor and improves focus tracking while zooming by 60%. For video shooters, the focusing system is 50% quieter and minimizes focus breathing. A camera with an EXPEED 7 processor will achieve the best AF performance with Silky Swift VCM. The minimum focusing distance has also been improved to just 9.4" at 24mm and 1.1' at 70mm.

Nikon reserves its "S" designation for its finest lenses, which meet stricter quality-control standards than normal lenses and offer second-to-none performance. A new optical design is more flare-resistant and features two extra low-dispersion and three aspherical elements that limit aberrations and fringing. A Meso Amorphous Coat gives the best-ever anti-reflective performance for any NIKKOR lens, and an ARNEO Coat offers well-rounded anti-glare protection to improve optical quality regardless of where the light comes from in your frame. A Fluorine coat on the front element repels dust, water, grease, and makes it easier to wipe clean. Bokeh rendering is fantastic, and the f/2.8 aperture delivers beautiful background blur throughout the focal range.

Compared to the original 24-70mm f/2.8 S Lens, the new design weighs in at just 1.5 lb. Internal zoom helps to shorten the overall length of the lens, and the front filter size has been updated from 82mm to the much more popular (and cheaper) 77mm size. The standard focus and zoom rings are paired with a customizable Control Ring, which can be adjusted to settings such as aperture, exposure compensation, and ISO. The lens barrel also has two customizable L-Fn buttons and a focus limiter switch. The included HB-117 lens hood has a filter-adjustment window for rotating filters like polarizers/variable NDs.
