Mostly great

I'm really glad I went with the Z8 over the Z6III. The electronic shutter, I think, will make me happier long term. I am having an issue with it where, in bracketed shots, it sometimes replaces one of the shots with a shot from the previous bracket. Not great. I'm working with Nikon and they are researching the issue; a few others have reported it, too. This is easy to check for by reviewing each picture before moving to the next one, so it's not the end of the world, but it is disappointing. Overall the camera works quite well. I'm a little disappointed that the user modes (or whatever they now call it) doesn't store all settings, I have to remember to switch a few things on when I go back to that mode. But that has always been the case with Nikon; even my D750 didn't remember critical things in its user modes. (Like the role of the second card.) I like that it has controls for easily adjusting the delay - it's easy to switch from my usual 2 seconds to 5 or 10 seconds with just a button and a wheel. My D750 required navigating menus. The Z8 has several things like that that are a nice step forward for pro users.

Fantastic mirrorless quality

Superperb pro quality, feels good in my hands. Still getting the hang of the mirrorless world, but this is a great camera that should be part of the arsenal for many years to come.

Love it!

Am loving this camera! It took me a while to get used to how quiet it was--I couldn't tell if I had actually taken a photo! Works great in low light, live focus is fast (always a problem with my previous Nikons), Love it!

D800 to Z8 switch

Seamless switch from my D800 to the Z8. Feels very similar, but a little lighter. The lens adapter does a great job, so I can continue to use all of my lenses.

The best camera I've ever used

The Nikon Z8 has become my main camera and one of the best creative tools I've ever owned. I use it for both photo and video work. It completely replaced my Nikon D750 for photo work and has also replaced my Blackmagic cinema pocket 6k camera for most of my video work. If you're coming from a DSLR or trying to consolidate photo and video into one system, the Z8 is a beast. It's easily one of the most capable creative tools I've owned. 5 stars.

Nikon Z8 camera

Best Nikon Z camera for pro-users. I also own the Zf, a very different concept, but the Z8 remains the top of the Z line. Lenses are aplenty as of today, but you can adapt any old lenses to the Z8, with perfect results. I own over 50 Nikon F, M42, Olympus, etc lenses, and I have Z adapters for all of them. I highly recommend the Z8 for any serious shooters.

Such a fantastic camera a lenses

I have my D5 and D6 as well as my work horse D850 and no interest in upgrading to the Z camera and lenses. Then I finally did it. I went to the Z8 because I didn't need all the extras of the Z9. When I got it home and started using it with my F lens and was blown away with the picture quality of this Z8. I now started buying the Z lenses and I'm absolutely loving the Z8 for the size and again for the picture quality and its speed.

Extreme lighting Conditions

The Nikon Z8 has a very good camera overall?.the image quality is excellent and the autofocus system is generally fast and reliable in most lighting conditions. However, I've noticed that in very bright backlit situations, the autofocus can sometimes miss focus or take a bit longer to lock on than expected. It still gets the job done, but it's not perfect in those extreme lighting conditions. Otherwise, for everyday shooting and most scenarios, the autofocus performs well and makes the camera a great choice for serious photographers.

Great camera! Useless bag

The camera is awesome. I am giving this 4 stars because I don't know what purpose the small case is. It barely holds the camera by itself. The rest of the items appear to be good.

Great camera

Being a bit of a retro-grouch at times, I didn't expect I'd like this camera as much as I would??.but I realllllllly like this camera. In the past, for Nikon I've owned an N8008s, D40, D80, D3, D3s, D800E, and D810 (still currently own the D810)?.overall my favorite was the D3s, but I think the Z8 may have dethroned it. I like the rear button layout and being able to access the menu, zoom in/out and "ok" buttons with my right thumb. It's the little things like that which makes shooting faster and easier. I do miss the larger, green backlit LCD on top of the DSLR's though. The amount of technology they've packed into the Z8 is quite impressive. Ergonomically, comparing my D810 to the Z8 (comparing to a full-size body like the D3s wouldn't be fair), I like the feel of the D810 in hand better, the Z8 feels a bit blocky?..but I added a SmallRig L-Bracket to the Z8 and it's improved the feel. Not sure why SmallRig discontinued that. I like having an electronic shutter vs. a mechanical shutter (less to wear out), as well as having the sensor shield down when the camera is off/changing lenses. The Z8 renders noise quite well at higher ISO's with black and white conversions?..almost reminds me of shooting Tri-X (grainier) and T-Max (less grainier) from way back. The EVF on the Z8 is quite good, and having the ability to zoom in while using the EVF to manually focus (think macro or anything that requires critical focus) is awesome. I also love finally having a camera with IBIS. Image quality is good but doesn't really look any different than my D810. I'm not sure why Nikon took a step backward with the flash sync speed only being 1/200th now on the Z8 - wasn't impressed with that. I did have a bit of a weird issue with flash triggering during a family portrait shoot yesterday - for some reason, my studio strobe wouldn't fire when set to 1/200th in the flash menu, but when I switched it to 1/200th in high speed sync (this isn't a HSS flash unit), then it triggered normally. Could've been a glitch with either the flash trigger in the hotshoe or the camera, not sure which. I'll have to test to see if I can re-create the problem, but didn't run into that before. Bottom line, if you want a new camera with all the bells and whistles and Z-series glass, the Z8 is great. If you don't need or want all the bells and whistles and are happy with the performance and quality of your D810, D6 or D850 and your G series lenses, then stick with what you have

Much better than Z6ii!

I really like the speed of the auto focus for my bird photography and facial recognition on people even a long distance away! I like the higher megapixels so that I can crop or pixel peak even up to 400%! Feels great in the hand, even tho a little heavier than my z6's. I should've just bought the Z8 instead of the Z6's esp. since I do a lot of bird photography.

charge batteries at 80% may be a good idea.

After market Battery works find. 5 charges so far. So I save my Nikon ones at 80%. I have some little used 20 year old Nikon batteries which I keep in the cameras still rated as new. Using the flash as a slave with my 40 year old sensors although there is no swivel . Better idea is it lets the model know I am shooting with out effecting the photo due to the long distance. A pre flash is get ready with out any waving to bother others.

About Nikon Z8

PRO REVIEW by Joe McNally, Commercial and Editorial Photographer

"With the Nikon Z8 Camera, you’ll receive so much power and technology at a truly affordable level....The camera strikes a beautiful balance among the virtues of durability and weather-sealing, super advanced tech, and the ability to walk with it on your shoulder all day long."

The Nikon Z8 is one of Nikon's flagship full-frame cameras, offering outstanding features for photographers and videographers alike. Building around a 45.7-megapixel stacked sensor and utilizing Nikon's EXPEED 7 Image Processor, the Z8 delivers both top-tier speed and resolution in a single camera body. Boasting up to 20 fps burst RAW shooting, 8K30p recording, and a very impressive autofocus system, the Z8 is an excellent choice for any professional or semi-pro photographer who demands the most from their camera body.

45.7MP Stacked BSI CMOS Sensor

The Z8 utilizes the same sensor as the Z9, a 45.7-megapixel BSI-stacked CMOS sensor that offers outstanding low-light performance, speed, resolution, sharpness, and color. ISO can be extended from 32-102400. The stacked sensor minimizes rolling shutter, and an electronic shutter enables shutter speeds up to 1/32000s. In fact, Nikon has completely forgone a mechanical shutter, meaning less wear and tear on the camera and completely silent operation.

EXPEED 7 Image Processor

The EXPEED 7 Processor is utilized in Nikon’s flagship camera models and offers unmatched performance and speed in the Nikon Z6iii, Nikon Z8, and Nikon Z9. The Z8 can capture 20 fps in RAW and 30 fps in JPEG, and up to 120 fps when shooting 11-megapixel stills. Even better, over 1000 RAW images can be buffered in a single burst, meaning you can record image sequences for over 50 seconds continuously. To complement burst shooting, Pre-Release Capture can record frames up to 1 second before the shutter button is depressed.

NKZ8K

Quick & Accurate Autofocus

The Z8 utilizes Nikon’s flagship 493-point phase-detection autofocus system, which maintains focus at up to 120 fps. A 3D Tracking AF also pairs with subject detection that is perfect for fast-moving action, such as wildlife or sports. Deep learning technology and sophisticated Subject Detection allow the Z8 to recognize subjects such as humans, animals, airplanes, bicycles, and more. Eye-Detection AF has also been improved for greater accuracy and refined recognition, regardless of the subject's distance. Finally, Starlight mode allows autofocus down to -9 EV, ideal for astrophotography, concerts, and other shooting in extremely low light.

NKZ8K

8K30p & 4K120p Recording

The Z8 is just as powerful for video as it is for photo. With full-pixel readout, UHD 8K 30p recording can be captured for approximately 90 minutes, 4k for 2 hours. 4K video can also be oversampled up to 60p for better sharpness and detail. In-video frame grabs can be recorded in-camera to produce up to 33-megapixel stills (during 8K shooting). 8.3K 60p is also supported in N-RAW, which is Nikon's raw recording format that can offer smaller file sizes when compared to other RAW formats. The Z8 also supports internal recording with 10-bit color and 4:2:2 sampling in ProRes 422 HQ and H.265 codecs.

Powerful Filmmaking Tools

To help filmmakers, the Nikon Z8 includes focus peaking for fast/accurate manual focus, and Zebra stripes and a waveform monitor help with exposure. Additionally, time code generation is supported, as well as a red REC frame indicator.

External Audio

For professional sound, XLR microphones are supported via the Tascam adapter. The Z8 is capable of 24-bit linear PCM internal audio.

NKZ8K

Synchro VR

IBIS up to 6 stops when used with select Z lenses for shake-free footage and sharp stills.

Special Features for Portraits

Skin softening can be used to slightly blur the skin for a better texture without ruining the sharpness of the eyes and hair. Auto White Balance has been greatly improved and optimized for human subjects. In the field, photographers can also fine-tune hue and brightness for more precise control and to reduce the post-production work required to achieve the desired results.

NKZ8K

Compact Yet Professional Design

The Z8 is 30% smaller than the Z9 and 15% smaller than the D850, and offers specs similar to those of the two cameras in a much more compact body that is easier to work with for photographers who spend their days on the go. A 3.2" 2.1m-dot four-axis tilting touchscreen LCD is highly versatile in both horizontal and vertical orientations. At the same time, the 3.69m-dot OLED Real-Live Viewfinder uses adjustable luminance up to 3000 cd/m2, which allows for better viewing in harsh light. When shooting in burst mode, the viewfinder also features blackout-free viewing and a 120 fps refresh rate.

NKZ8K

Extensive Connectivity

The Z8 features a full-sized HDMI port as well as 2 USB-C ports. This configuration of 2 USB-C ports allows the camera to receive power through one and send data through the other.

NKZ8K

Differences Between Nikon Z8 and Z9

On paper, the Z8 and Z9 look strikingly similar but differ significantly in price. The Z8 is compact and 30% smaller than the Z9, which features a built-in battery grip and a larger battery that allows for longer shooting times. The Z9 also features two fast CFexpress Type B slots compared to the Z8, which uses one CFexpress Type B and one SD card slot. The Z9 also comes equipped with a built-in GPS/GNSS and a hardwired Ethernet port that is useful for studio, sports, and photojournalism photographers. Finally, the larger size of the Z9 gives it a slight edge in heat dissipation, allowing for longer, continuous recording of 8K footage.
