Review Summary

I bought two Nikon ZR bodies as backup / B-cameras to pair with my Nikon Z8, and overall I'm really happy with them. I also own a Fujifilm X100VI, and the ZR feels surprisingly close in size, which makes it an awesome compact option, especially because I can use my existing Z-mount lenses. The biggest positives for me are the photo quality and the RED RAW video capabilities. The image coming out of the camera looks great, and having RED RAW in such a small body is kind of wild. As someone already invested in the Nikon Z system, it feels like a really useful tool to have alongside the Z8 for video and a smaller camera option when i need to pack light. My main drawback is the lack of an EVF and buttons, but that's also exactly what my Z8 is for. The ZR feels more like a compact cinema-style companion body than a full replacement for a traditional hybrid camera, and in that role it makes a lot of sense.

I'm disappointed with the quality and built of the camera. It feels very hollow and plastic with little heft to the camera, also a big factor is that there is no viewfinder which I find disappointing

The Nikon ZR is easily one of the best cameras I've ever owned. What impresses me most is how it balances portability with performance it's compact enough to take anywhere, yet powerful enough to handle professional work with ease. I've found myself leaving my Komodo and Nikon Z8 at home more often because the ZR truly holds its own in demanding environments. From color depth to dynamic range and autofocus reliability, it delivers consistent results that rival much larger setups. Overall, the Nikon ZR has become my go-to camera. It's lightweight, reliable, and capable of producing professional grade visuals without compromise.

An astonishing camera for the price! I bought this as a B camera to my Komodo-X and it matches flawlessly. What I love most about it is I can capture "informal" cinema veritè without drawing attention to myself or intimidating the subject. It's an intimate camera and yet it's great enough to pull off epic shots. This camera also matches very well to the V-Raptor. It has quirks but the image and audio is so good it won't matter.

Technology
Aspherical Lens
A lens with a curved, non-spherical surface. Used to reduce aberrations and enable a more compact lens size. Aspherical lenses minimize coma and other types of lens aberrations, even when used at the widest aperture. They are particularly useful in correcting distortion in wide-angle lenses and help contribute to a lighter, more compact design by reducing the number of standard (spherical) elements necessary. Aspherical lens elements correct these distortions by continuously changing the refractive index from the center of the lens.
Stepping Motor
NIKKOR Z lenses use a stepping motor for fast, accurate, smooth, quiet autofocus with reduced wobbling. This quiet drive system makes the lenses ideal for use when shooting video.
Electromagnetic Diaphragm Mechanism
An electromagnetic diaphragm mechanism in the lens barrel provides highly accurate electronic diaphragm or aperture blade control when using auto exposure during continuous shooting.
Internal Focusing
A NIKKOR lens in which only the internal lens group shifts during focusing. Thus, IF NIKKORS do not change in size during AF operation, allowing for compact, lightweight lenses capable of closer focusing distances. These lenses will be designated with the abbreviation IF on the lens barrel.
Multi Focus System
The multi-focusing system is the evolution of that AF system with which the positions of multiple focusing groups are very precisely controlled, each by its own focusing unit, all of which work together. This system effectively suppresses various types of aberration, even with scenes captured at close distances where aberrations are generally more likely to occur. This enables superior image-formation performance from maximum aperture, regardless of the focal length or shooting distance. It also contributes to faster AF. The multi-focusing system is effective even with fast lenses.
