Questions & Answers

Carole M : Polarizing filter and NID filters.....Can you recommend a good CPL filter that doesn't cause vignetting at the wider end of this lens?  And what level of ND filter  (4, 6 or 8 stop) would be most useful if I were buying just one filter (mostly for smoothing water)?OTTO K : I have been using the Nikon Circular Polarizer II (it is pretty thin compared with other brands) with this and my 24-70 lens when I use a polarizer with them. I did not notice any vignetting that is not completely correctable in Lightroom with lens correction applied. That being said I tend not to use it very often on my wide lenses as it can cause banded sky (darker on one side than the other) due to polarization varying with angle to the sun. Stacking a polarizer and an ND has led to some pretty heavy vignetting. Lens correction in Lightroom removed some of it. I had to take a slight crop to remove the rest. If you do this leave more room for cropping in post. For that lens I use Hoya PRO ND64 (6-stop ND filter). I like that strength as my camera can still focus through it. I then can tweak the shutter speed up or down using Aperture and ISO. Hope this is helpful for you.CHARLES K : I have used a regular CPL filter and have not seen any vignetting. When I say regular, I mean, it is not a slim. If I stack and put an ND filter with the CPL, I do see some.
WALTER A : How can I tell it is a VR-II? I do not see it on the lens.LEE T : I believe all of the Nikon 16-35 f4 VR lenses are VRII. I believe the lens was first produced in 2010 and had VRII technology at that time. It is probably the very best lens that I own and have used it on extensively on my D600 and now D610 Cameras. The VR is a life saver in that I no longer have to drag around a tripod and still get tack sharp shots in sometimes very difficult situations where a tripod would be out of the question.LARRY C : My understanding is that VRII has the VR on the barrel of the lens in gold. VR that is in red is just VR.Mark D : Nikon's web site describes the lens as VRIIJAMES D : I have the lens, I am not aware that its has the VR II designation. It is VR, but with a lens you can easily handhold at 15th to 30th of a second - I am not sure it matters much which VR version it has.
Shopper : is this a new, unused sense?ANDREW R : I'm not sure I understand your question. The item in this product listing is new (not used or refurbished). Items we sell are NEW unless otherwise indicated.

F-mount perfection

This lens is still amazing this many years later all while adapted to the Z system. I shoot portraits, automotive and nature. 16-35 gives me a great range to shoot in for all scenarios. The f/4 aperture is still fast enough for most situations I could put it in.

Excellent Lens

I hadn't used this lens very much until recently when I took home night shots in Philadelphia. The quality is shockingly excellent, especially in how perfectly the glass captures streetlights. It is a heavy lens, but I see it as a small tradeoff for the great images it captures.

Not a bad lens, just a bit soft

I have mixed feelings about this lens. First off, I purchased it specifically because it was an ultra-wide that I could mount filters on. For that purpose, the lens is great, and I think it travels really well. Its in no way a bad lens, however, since moving to the Z system, it's made me aware of how soft this lens actually is. If you edit your photos to look dreamy, add the orton effect, etc, this lens will suit you well. If you're looking for ultra-sharpness, I would personally switch to the Z system, or invest in the wonderful 14-24 f/2.8

Great lens, great people to do business with!

First off let me say my order was taken, packaged and delivered as promised by Adorama in a first class manner. I purchased this lens for my Nikon D850 and as of the moment I have not had a chance to put it to good use, but to me it feels comfortable to carry on the camera. I have only been able to take pictures inside and outside of my abode, but have used ISO from 64 to 3200 with various aperture settings and zoom ranges and have been pleasantly surprised with the quality of the picture. I purchased this lens to use for mainly landscape photography and judging from the pics taken from my door and porch, it will be a great lens. Anyone who buys this lens will not be disappointed. But let it be known, I am not a professional, just someone who enjoys photography.

Great lens for landscapes and interiors. love it.

Wonderful. Focus is quick and accurate. Some distortion @ 16mm but to be expected. Also got it on sale for slightly more than used.

Excellent Ultra-wide

Excellent Superwide zoom lens. Shooting with it I’ve found it to be sharp at all focal lengths. Distortion is minimal above 20mm, at 16mm there’s significant but easy to correct distortion with the lens profile applied in post. Light fall off is negligible at the corners. It’s Nikon’s sharpest ultra-wide zoom.

Only good up to 16mpx cameras. Once you use it on 36 + mpx it is extremely soft.

Great wide angle lens

I’ve been using this lens for over a year. It’s my go-to lens for landscape photography. Great lens for the price and it provides a lot of versatility. It does pretty good in low light situations and if needed just bump up the ISO.

Nice Wide Angle Zoom lens

Nice "light" weight lens for Nikon. This is much lighter than most of my other Nikon lens, that is nice for hand holding. The optics are nice, have not detected any issue with them.

Should be part of every photograper's lens bag

This is a great lens and should be part of everyone's lens bag. First, it's a super wide angle that accepts 77mm filters. Second, it covers a range of focal lengths that we all use in landscape photography and third, it's sharp!

Great Lens for landscape photography in Alaska

The lens makes a great companion to the 24-120 kit lens without breaking the bank. I switch the lens between my D600 and D750 and they both get great shots. Ansel Adams I'm not, but the mountain landscapes look great. Photos will be uploaded when I'm back.

Nice wide angle landscape lens

By far, this is one of the best wide angle full frame lenses for landscapes. A little distortion at the wide end, a little vignetting, but in camera and or post eliminated it.

Very Clear and Crisp

So, I bought this so I would have a wide-angle lens for my new D750. I was a bit worried about the F/4 but I did some shots inside and with the ISO up high, the shots came out great! I'll let my pictures do the talking. I would recommend this lens!

Great wide lens

I love this lens. It’s not the 14-24 f2.8, but a great wide for the price. You can use screw on filters, unlike the 14-24. Solid build, useful focal range for landscapes and environmental portraits. VR allows for handheld photography with sharp results at pretty ridiculously slow shutter speeds (esp at 16mm).

One of the lenses I use more often underwater

Great rectilinear wide angle lense, one of my favorite lenses underwater, very sharp I’ll love if it was in 2.8 as well as the canon version. Very anyways is an awesome lense and with my Nikon D850 I can bring all the potencial.

A great addition to my lens collection

While I spend a great deal of my time on studio macro photography I also like to travel and am trying to broaden the scope of my work by taking more landscape photos. This lens is excellent for that and not too heavy even when handheld by this 78 year old woman and I will be taking it on my upcoming two month trip to Europe. Should get a lot of use.

Great Landscape Lens

I have been in photography as a hobby for years. I just also got the Nikon D810 and this lens is for that camera. The lens is sharp and clear. I have not seen any distortion (I do not lens correction active in the camera) from the lens. It is a little heavy, but I knew that when I purchased it. It is a NIKON and they are known for their weight, but quality.

FEATURED REVIEWS

Great lens

By FRED M.

If you're looking for a wide-angle zoom that will cover an FX sensor, you should consider the 16-35mm f/4 VR. I'm very happy with this lens. It may not be quite as good as the 14-24mm f/2.8 lens when it comes to sharpness, but they're very close. The 14-24mm is an excellent lens. However, there are some advantages to the 16-35mm. In my opinion, a big advantage is the ability to attach filters to the front of the lens ---- you can't do that with the 14-24mm. The 14-24mm is faster (f/2.8)...

This is the Wide Angle Lens You Need

By ALLAN W.

You want tack sharp, you got it. You want great focusing capabilities, you got it. Color fidelity is excellent. Yes it's a little heavy, it's a professional lens, get over it. The inner workings and solid construction are what you pay the worthwhile pennies for. I shoot lighthouse locations, and did some serious hiking with it, it works just as expected. Don't worry about the F4 zoom, as most cameras today you can easily bump up the ISO to compensate without paying the price of severe grainin...

The Nikon AF Zoom-Nikkor 16-35mm f/4G ED VR is the Nikon's first ultra wide-angle zoom lens with Vibration Reduction. Designed for photojournalists, wedding and travel photographers, the high-performance 16-35mm lens is compatible with both full-frame and APS-sensor Nikon DSLR cameras. It features a fixed f/4 maximum aperture, advanced coatings for optimal lens performance, and VR that gains 2.5 stops of blur-free handheld shooting, making it an excellent choice for the professional photographer and videographer.

What you should know about this lens:
• Quiet autofocus: Nikon's Silent Wave Motor (SWM) uses ultrasonic vibrations rather than a gear system to focus the lens for smooth, silent, precise Autofocus. The lens has a focus mode that lets you switch from AF to manual focus by simply turning the focus ring to fine-tune focus. This quiet operation makes the lens well-suited for digital cinema. Focus is internal (IF), so the physical length of the lens doesn't change as you focus.
• Class glass: Anti-reflective Nano Crystal coating solves ghosting and flare, while ED (Extra-Low Dispersion glass fixes chromatic aberrations. An Aspherical element eliminates lens aberrations.
• Good bokeh: A rounded 9-blade diaphragm renders natural-looking out-of-focus areas while producing rounded spectral highlights.
• This lens is especially well-suited for travel photography, cityscapes, weddings, low-light photography and architecture photography.

Nikon 16-35mm Features

  • Definitive Wide-angle Zoom Lens: Versatile wide-angle lens, perfect for travel, land and cityscapes, and general photography
  • Nikon VR (Vibration Reduction) Image Stabilization: Vibration Reduction, engineered specifically for each VR NIKKOR lens, enables handheld shooting at up to 4 shutter speeds slower than would otherwise be possible, assuring dramatically sharper still images and video capture.
  • Nano Crystal Coat: Further reduces ghosting and interior flare across a wide range of wavelengths for even greater image clarity.
  • Extra-low Dispersion (ED) Elements: Offers superior sharpness and color correction by effectively minimizing chromatic aberration, even at the widest aperture settings.
  • Aspherical Lens Elements: Aspherical lens elements virtually eliminate coma and other types of aberration, even when shooting at the widest available aperture.
  • Internal Focus (IF): Provides fast and quiet autofocus without changing the length of the lens, retaining working distance throughout the focus range.
  • Exclusive Nikon Silent Wave Motor (SWM): Enables fast, accurate and quiet autofocus.
  • M/A Focus Mode Switch: Enables quick changes between manual and autofocus operation.
  • Rounded 9-Blade Diaphragm: Renders more natural appearance of out-of-focus image elements.

Key Features

  • Nikon VR (Vibration Reduction) Image Stabilization
  • Nano Crystal Coat
  • Extra-low Dispersion (ED) Elements
  • Aspherical Lens Elements
  • Internal Focus (IF)
