Picked this lens up ~2 years used. Hands down the best DX lens I've used on my Nikon DX. I mainly shoot landscapes and architecture. This lens excels in most any conditions. I have B+W filters on this lens and love the results with the circular polarizer. True colors and crisp details. Good in low light situations such as sunset/sunrise. I've been tempted to try the 18-300 zoom but I don't want to put this lens down for an all-in-one because the results can't be as good.

I have a lot of Nikkor primes, but this is the lens I use for walking around with my D7500. I've read that it's not the sharpest, but I'm not pixel-peepng. My 11 x 14 inch prints look just fine. Recommended.

Sharp and very flexible, this lens made my camera bag much lighter because I use it to replace three lenses I used to carry.

I love this lens. Since I received it I haven’t took it off my camera. It does the job I needed it for, giving me a wide angle shot and a little zoom as well. The pics I taken with this lens turned out better then I expected. For the price I think I got a great deal. I really don’t want to get in the technical aspect but the lens is performing better than my expectations.

A first time owner of this lens (Nikkor 16-80mm DX) I have not owned it long enough for my review to count too much, but my initial use has been wonderful. It is a solid well constructed Nikon product. I give it high marks for image sharpness. It is a bit spendy... but I think of it as an investment for life and I'll get lots of return on my investment in the enjoyment I receive.

I was looking to replace several Nikon lenses with more of a walk-around lens. I did not need a long zoom range, as I always use two cameras when out on a photoshoot. Depending on the lens used on my main camera, the other camera will either have a Nikon 10-20mm AP-VR or the 70-300 AP-VR lens attached. I have been using the 18-200 MM VR since 2010. I read and reread consumer and pro-reviews. Some people loved the lens, others did not. New, the lens cost was way outside my budget. I was pleased to see Adorama offered a refurbished unit at a fair price. So I decided to try it, knowing I could return it if it proved unsatisfactory. I have used it on two different photo hikes, and have been very pleased with the results. Sharp with great color rendition. Zoom ring a bit sluggish as mentioned in almost all the reviews, but not significantly so. Not much different from the 18-200. I liked the 16MM versus the 18mm wide on all my other lenses. Minute for sure, but definitely made a difference when shooting some iron mill ruins. I did not have to use my 10-20 MM nearly as much as I usually would. Overall, this is a wonderful addition to my arsenal of equipment!

Excellent lens, perfect upgrade from the kit lenses

Almost a perfect lens. I'm using this to replace a Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 lens that no longer works. Hopefully this lens will not fail just as all my other Nikon lenses are working flawlessly. Its very sharp. Just not f2.8 at all magnifications. The closeup feature at 80mm is a bonus though as I don't have another closeup lens. Its a full stop faster than my original kit lens. Using this on Nikon D7100 and D90 camera bodies. Focuses quickly and sharp.

Love this lens so far. The range is fantastic, it's wonderfully sharp, and relatively lightweight. I expect it'll stay on my camera for 90% of my shots.

This is an amazing lens. I purchased this lens prior to upgrading my camera body. I was using a D5200 when I purchased the lens and am now using a D7500. Since this is a high quality lens developed for higher end DX cameras its no surprise that the performance is superb. It combines great focal length options with an excellent aperture range to match. It seemed to breath new life into my D5200 camera. I had been longing for a lens with this much flexibility. This lens has replaced multiple lenses that I previously owned. Its just a great all around lens. The refurbished price just made it too hard to resist.

This is my favorite lens for my D5500! Beautiful color rendition, sharp corner to corner from 16 mm to 80mm!

After buying this lens I have sold all my other "walk-around" lenses. Sometimes I wish it had a touch more zoom but the quality of the images more than makes up for that.

The 16-80 was my choice when we ordered a new D7500 and we love it. While not a professional photographer the upgrade from an older D90 was a little challenging. Being a senior citizen does not help. Pleased to reccomend both the camera and lens.

I need a faster lens for wildlife photography, and this lens fits the bill without the bulk of a longer lens. It also doubles as a all-around travel lens, especially for indoor or low light photography. It provides good wide angle coverage as well as moderate telephoto capability. We are headed to an area where we will be in hides (blinds) at dusk and in the evening, so we will be reasonably close to any subjects that appear inside the lighted area of the blinds. This lens will serve me well for that purpose. I would recommend the lens as a travel lens as well as for someone photographing in low light.

Great VR and quick to focus. I have used it with a D7500 for 4 weeks. Sharpness is good. Excellent contrast.

This lens is not only sharp but is crisp for quick wildlife shots. I was recommend this lens from fellow photographers, yet was still surprised at how great it was when I tried it. It comes with a fantastic lens hood. I love the knocking/unlocking tab on the side. If you’re on the fence with this lens, go ahead. Yes the price is a little high but it’s worth the dime. Your photography needs this tool in your camera bag.

This lens is awesome!! Probably my favorite lens, the VR is the greatest thing since cameras were invented. It's also a really fast lens which I love since I like using naturally the most. The images that are produced have a crisp, vibrant feel and look to them. I would highly recommend this lens.

I was disappointed with the image quality I was getting with the Nikon 18-200 zoom on my D7100. That lens was part of a D200 kit bought over 10 years ago. I had been satisfied with it originally but not lately on the D7100. So I bought the 16-80 hoping for better sharpness and contrast, and I’m happy to report that it delivered exactly that. The extra wide angle of the 16 vs 18 is noticeable, as is the wider aperture, so those are a bonus as well. It’s nice to have the ability to zoom out beyond 80 mm with the 18-200, but if I need that much reach it is almost always because I’m trying to photograph wildlife, and then I will want my 55-300 or the 200-500 sitting on my D500, which are both also excellent for image quality. The 16-80 seems perfect for landscapes and portraits, and will usually sit on my D7100. The Nikon refurbished lenses that I have seem better than new as far as I can tell, and it’s always nice to get a discount. Vary happy that I bought the 16-80.

Although I have a nice collection of lenses, this tends to be my go to for most uses. Great for everything from landscapes to portraits.

Reviews were so positive so I bit for the higher price for this lens for my D7200. The photos are simply great, color. detail and lighting so true with no post-processing. This has squelched my incipient thoughts of going to a FF camera (at least for the time being.)

This is a replacement for my 16-85VR that was stolen and I was astounded to find that it's even better...faster, sharper and closer focus. I thought it wouldn't be worth the much higher price but I'm glad to be proved wrong. A very good deal from Adorama also including a few necessary accessories for the retail price, essentially a bonu$.

Love this lens. It is my new walk around lens for everyday shooting. Amazing clarity on either my d7200 or d800e. It probably takes better pics than I am capable of. Truly my go to.

I finally got a great walk around lens. Although it was expensive I decided to take a deep breath and go for it. Adorama return policy was also a deciding factor for I knew if I didn’t like the lens it could be returned.

I waited a few months to give this lens an honest workout, and can sum it up concisely: WOW, it's worth the investment. I have several Nikon/Nikkor lenses and this blows them all away, even my primes. I actually used my (cheap) AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR 99% of the time for walking around, because it outperformed all my other lenses for most applications... but sadly I dropped it and broke the autofocus. Replacing that 18-55 with this AF-S DX NIKKOR 16-80mm f/2.8-4E ED VR was literally a night-and-day improvement in picture quality. The lens is fast, great autofocus, great low-light, great VR, great bokeh. If you're looking for a good walking-around lens, I was very happy with the 18-55, and it is quite a bit lighter than this 16-80 (my small tripod now tips over with this 16-80 attached). But if your goal is image quality plus making your photos brilliant and artistic, this 16-80 is the one lens that's actually worth the price of admission.

This is a massive step up from the 18-105 kit lens my D7100 came with. Very sharp, very fast and very much worth the price of admission!

Because the aperture is f/2.8-4 this is a light weight lense perfectly suitable as a walk around lense for a camera with a crop sensor. It would be a wide angle lense for a full frame sensor. Highly recommended.

Nikkor 16-80mm F2.8/4 test
By Thejohnz
i owned the Nikkor 16-85F3.5/5.6 years ago. It was a great lens but when I made the move to FX I sold this lens along with the D7000. Now, after owning a D800 and D750, I got intrigued by the latest offering, (in the DX market) the D7200. It proved to be a great camera for telephoto shots, (I own the 80-400 F4.5/5.6, the 70-200F4, the 300mmF4 VR) but I had no wide angle lenses to use with it. So, I purchased the 16-80mmF2.8/4 in the hopes it would be a good match. Well, after two days of sh...

Superb mid-range nano-coated zoom lens!
By DaveyJ
I have waited for a long time for a flagship 16-80 range DX lens. It's here! The build quality, fit and finish is super. The ability to have this range in a no questions lens for a camera such as the D7100 and D7200 is now available. It is excellent in macro, can really reduce camera shake with the on board VR, and the lens coating appears perfect. If you have really longed for this zoom range in DX with no compromises this is it. It is not a small lens. The provided lens hood when in place m...

Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 16-80mm f/2.8-4E ED VR lens - an amazingly versatile DX-format lens that is well suited for advanced and enthusiast photographers. The NIKKOR 16-80mm features a combination of the best Nikon lens technologies, some never before seen in a Nikon DX-format lens, including Nikon's legendary Nano Crystal Coat. The resulting lens gives a wide variety of photographers an all-purpose optic to help take their photography further and tell their story with clarity and precision.
The NIKKOR 16-80mm f/2.8-4 is combines the most advanced optical technologies with an extremely useful focal range to capture photos and HD video. This new lens is a great companion for Nikon's high-performance, lightweight series of DX-format DSLR cameras.
DX-Format Versatility
Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 16-80mm f/2.8-4E ED VR uses premium glass for those who desire a fast and highly capable wide-angle zoom lens. The lens features a popular, wide 24-120mm (FX-format equivalent) focal range, which makes it ideally suited for a variety of shooting disciplines. From wide-angle landscapes, tight portraits or for those looking for an all-in-one tool for travel, this lens does it all. The large f/2.8 - f/4 aperture lets photographers shoot in challenging light with ease, with the creative flexibility afforded by a shallow depth-of-field. Whether photographing friends' faces or a festive plate full of local flavor, the 16-80mm's fast aperture lets users blur the background to create that dramatic separation between subject and background that emphasizes and flatters a subject. For creative close-ups of everything from passion-projects to flowers, the lens has a very useful minimum focusing distance of merely 1.2 feet throughout the entire 5x zoom range.
To further enhance its low-light capability, the new NIKKOR 16-80mm f/2.8-4 lens also features Nikon's Vibration Reduction (VR) image stabilization technology, which provides up to 4 stops of image stabilization*, helping to create sharp images while shooting handheld or in challenging light. As an added benefit to landscape and wildlife photographers, this lens features VR with automatic tripod detection, to counteract vibration when mounted on a tripod.
The AF-S DX NIKKOR 16-80mm F/2.8-4E ED VR boasts some of the best optical innovations from Nikon, and is the first Nikon DX-format lens to wear the gold "N" emblem, to indicate the presence of Nikon's exclusive Nano Crystal Coat. This advanced optical coating significantly reduces instances of ghosting and flare for the highest quality images. The front and rear elements also integrate a fluorine coating to make it easier to remove dirt, moisture and smudges from the lens surface. This is also the first Nikon DX lens to feature an electromagnetic diaphragm; this innovation electronically adjusts the aperture within the lens, resulting in consistent exposure during high speed shooting.
The NIKKOR 16-80mm lens features robust construction while retaining a lightweight and compact body. The lens features four Extra-Low Dispersion (ED) elements and three aspheric elements to further combat instances of ghost, flare and chromatic aberration. The lens is constructed of 17 elements in 13 groups, and features a seven-blade diaphragm to create a circular, natural bokeh for a pleasing out of focus area of the image. For fast, accurate and quiet AF performance, the 16-80mm also features Nikon's Silent Wave Motor (SWM) technology.
