Questions & Answers

amy g : hi, do you tell us if the used product is grey market?DAVID J : The product as listed states "USA Warranty" which means the lens is not gray market, and you can obtain warranty service from Nikon USA. Gray market usually is denoted "International Warranty," if not explicitly listed as gray market.DANA J : This product listing is for a New USA Nikon 17-35mm that comes with a warranty. If you buy a used Nikon Lens from Adorama the listing will state if the lens is Grey Market.CURTIS W : I am not an expert on this matter. The key question is whether or not a USA Nikon warrantee card is included. The selling store should know this. Sometimes gray market lenses are identified using the term "USA warrantee" which is provided by a third party. In any case my lens performs quite well but does make high pitch motor noises on occasion. I am told that this is likely due to older motor design used.
Steve W : You'll laugh, but I found these two lenses in my basement. Apparently forgot about them, but are now happily using them. But I must have bought them ages ago, Right? (I don't see a serial number on either lens.) When were they introduced?TERRANCE M : I have both of these lens and they work great. If they work well for you I don't see date of manufacture as being important. Happy shooting!CHARLES L : I did some research and learned the 17-35 mm F2.8 was introduced in 1999. Even though better lenses have been introduced I will not trade my 17-35 mm. It is solidly built. I currently use it on my second camera when I go on a photoshoot. I gave it a workout in 2013 when I was in Southwest Asia for a month.SARA D : The serial number for your 17-35mm is on the aperture ring. It is stamped or engraved and will take good light to find it. Try exactly opposite side from aperture numbers. It is probably the same location for the other lens.
Harold H : I take a lot of photos of gymnastic meets. Will this lens take fast action shots close up with out blurring? I want to use it on the Nikon D7100 that I recently bought.TERRANCE M : This is a wide angle lens, you will have to be very close to your subject or your photo will be of a larger area then you want. This lens is fast and very clear, be sure to use a fast shutter speed and high ISO for inside photos. Good Shooting!CURTIS W : This is an excellent lens! However, I do not recommend it for most athletic events. It is more for scenery. I would recommend one of the fast (f4.5 or lower) telephoto lenses for sports. Be sure to have auto tracking focus version. I use a Nikon 70-300 mm f4.5 for granddaughters soccer games and gymnastics with super luck! Auto focus is big help. Also use ISO 1000 or higher sensitivity and try for 1/1000 second or faster shutter (use manual settings). I have stopped granddaughter with hair sharp clarity using this approach.STEVE H : You're not going to find a faster zoom lens. The only way you'd do any better is with a fast prime lens like a 35mm f1.8. It would be much less expensive, but you'd be giving up the wide angle focal length. A 35mm would be very close to a 50mm "normal" lens on a traditional 35mm film camera. That being said, unless you're doing portraits and wanting a very shallow depth of field, you'll be shooting at f4 or f5.6 or smaller most of the time anyways. Your D7100 will give you very good images with high ISO settings, so truth-be-told, you really don't need to pay for such a fast lens. Sure, you'll get a brighter viewfinder and slightly better performing autofocus in low light. But you can make up a few f-stops by shooting at ISO 800 or 1600.LISA G : Not really made for distance shots since it is a wide angle but if you are close to the gymnists as they perform it should work fine. Very good focus speed-I use it for indoor real estate shots and landscapes mostly.ROBERT E : The lense is a high quality product that is more than capable of taking fast action shots. But the lense is only one part of the sports photography equation. The other parts are the high speed and low light capabilities of the camera, the light quality of the venue, and mostly the skill of the photographer.SMITA D : Absolutely. I use it with a D700 and it takes great fast action shots.ROBERT R : Hi Harold With a maximum aperture of f/2.8 it should provide the speed you want/need. You can always boost the ISO if necessary. Because you will be shooting a D7100 with its APS-C sensor, the resulting magnification factor will effectively increase this lens' focal length to approximately 25-52mm. I don't know the camera to subject distance so I'm not sure that 52mm focal length will be a sufficient focal length for close ups. You may want to consider the 70-200mm f/4 as an acceptable alternative.MURRAY M : this lens is designed for FX format as well as DX. Because it has a constant F2.8, it is fast but you still need to set your ISO setting fast enough to prevent blur. The lens by itself will not stop blur. If your ISO is set at 800 or 1200 you will be okay, I thinkNOWELL W : I have shot indoor basketball with this and it works fine at f2.8. Blurring is not a function of the lens, it is a function of the shutter speed. I shoot mostly at 1200-1600 with a D700 and the shutter speed will be between 1/125 and 1/160 and some blurring will occur depending upon the direction of the action. Left-right fast movement is the most difficult. Fore-aft is easiest. You might look for the Nikon 17-55 f2.8 DX instead since it will be a closer match for your 7100. The 17-35 will be an effective focal length of about 26-52mm. It will also be less expensive and I've used both with similar results.MICHAEL H : Buy a DX lens. Lighter and cheaper. SHRUTHI K : I have been using this lens more often now than before. It's very fast and have not had any blurring. I'm using it with D5000. I take lot of portraits of my kids. The Bokeh effect is amazing. I also use 50mm/1.4f prime lens and both produce similar results for close up shots at same aperture. One word of caution is---if you use flash with the lens, do not use internal flash from camera as it produces a shadow due to the length of the lens. I use external flash SB700 and that solved the problem. IMO it's worth the investment. Sri Larry R : I haven't tried taking photos under the circumstances listed. However, I would think that with adequate light and keeping the focus on the particular subject/person of interest you would "freeze" the action. Any blurring would the be in the background. Hope this helps.PATRICK H : Probably, depending on the speed at which your subject is moving, and of course the closer it is, the less movement is required to cause blurring. To freeze the action you will likely need to use the camera's higher ISO settings to allow faster shutter speeds and if that's not enough, the aperture must be wider, making depth of focus shallower but there should be some combination of these things that will allow you to get sharp images, if somewhat noisy due to the high ISO. Good luck with all that, and remember, as long as you're finding new mistakes to make, you are making progress...JOHN Z : This lens is more wide than anything. You would be better off with a 70-200 w/ vr. RICHARD B : I believe you would be well satisfied with the results

Used Lens = good savings, wrong packed caps and hood not so much.

I ordered two used Nikon 17-35 f/2.8D lenses - because they are still the goto street lens IMHO. You couldn't find them until a few years ago - now they are cheap used. One shipped out of NY and the other shipped out of TN. Both were listed as "heavily used" but with caps and hood. One had the original caps and correct HB-23 hood. The other had generic caps and a hood for a 200mm lens, not a 17-35m. The lenses themselves -- good working order, good AFS SWM focus, with zoom and aperture rings functional. I didn't see any scratches or internal dust on glass - but used means used - they have slight dings. caveat: no issue for me. Overall - good deal, if I had to order a correct flower hood HB-23 for second item. One star off for improper equipment by used lens team -- please note that lens has 3rd party cpas and or incorrect lens hood. Little league mistake maybe. This is the third lens order for me from adorama -- and used is used when you save $1,000 on an item that is perfectly functional, even if it has a ding or two. win/win.

"Grail" Wide Angle Zoom

I purchased the 17-35mm for use on my Nikon F2-AS 35mm film camera. Great lens for landscapes as well as street/metro locations. I consider this lens a "grail" must-have. Not bad for a 45 year old camera plus a great lens. I look forward to using this lens on a 850 when I purchase one soon.

Beautiful lens

I've got two Nikon lenses for my D810 - the 24-70 2.8 and this 17-35 2.8. Yes these two were expensive (for me anyway), but do no think I will need anything else. Highly recommend the 17-35mm 2.8.

This lens is a beauty a little heavy but worthy!

This lens is a beauty a little heavy but worthy! It seems that it was made to endure for a loooong time. Built like a tank, it feels strong. Of course it has some imperfections, never try to shoot the 17mm at the 2.8 aperture, it is not that clear but everything else is pretty good to me, Love it!

An investment not to be missed

I conducted a lot of non-scientific research for a FX lens that I could used for shooting real estate interiors and this lens actually came out the winner. I wanted to avoid some of the issues related to the 14-24mm, 16-28mm and other ultra wide angle lenses and it performs well. I have no problem capturing an entire room floor to ceiling and the color saturations are excellent. As with all lenses no matter the cost, it has soft corners when shooting wide open but, closed down to f/5.6, f/8, and smaller it is very sharp and fast. I also own the Nikkor Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8 that I use on my DX bodies and it is equally as good. Excellent lens and highly recommended.

Bought Used - awesome deal

Bought this used from Adorama with a D rating. Meaning is supposed to be like new. And it absolutely is. Can't see a mark on the thing. Super fast focusing and without the infamous nikon squeak with a big price savings. Some say this lens is heavy but coming from the Tamron 24-70 its not heavy at all. So far loving it.

Lived up to it's promise

It looks and functions extremely well. Only very slight flaw is with the lens hood.....it's difficult to place properly requiring only a greater attention to its attachment. a very minor complaint for the high quality and great price.

This lens performs beautifully, smooth, has a fast focus and feels sturdy. I bought it used since new is a bit in the pricey side, but it is worth every cent. A must have lens.

This is a great lens. Nikon has newer lenses that are about the same but this one is made of metal. It is a classic and does exactly what I needed. I'll have it forever.

Fantastic Lens!

I got this lens because I wanted to switch to all f/2.8 lenses for my wedding photography. I had the 16-35mm f/4 VR lens, but quite frankly I don't think the VR gave me any value for shooting wedding action shots. The only thing the VR is good for is shooting stationary objects where you can hand hold the camera at a shutter speed of 1/10 second or slower. I generally shoot at at least 1/50 second so getting the f/2.8 lens gave me an additional stop of light gathering power. Weight comparison between the two : the 17-35 is 2 ounces heavier which is negligible. Size comparison - the 17-35 is 1/2" shorter than the 16-35 f/4. Get the 16-35 f/4 lens if you want to hand hold the camera at slow shutter speeds. Get the 17-35 if you need it for photographing action in low light. They are both extremely sharp professional lenses.

Great Performer

I had pondered this lens for quite some time. I am very glad I got it and I got it for a steal too! I would recommend this lens to anyone who is in need of a more purposeful wide zoom. The build quality is just fantastic, strong metal construction. My only complaint would be the fact that the corners never sharpen up, although they aren't exactly soft, just not tack sharp. I haven't noticed any vignetting yet that made a photo unusable and the CA cleans up nice in lightroom. If you are unsure about the lens, my suggestion is to get it.

Fantastic Pro Lens!

Great for DX and FX cameras. I use this for landscape and even architectural photography. The relatively low distortion on this lens makes it great for both types of photography. While not ideal, I correct for converging lines in photoshop. The lens is very sharp and resolves well. And rugged. Not that I would suggest it, but have dropped it twice from about 3' onto wood floors. I thought that I had lost the lens, but it is still working like a champ. Again, not recommended that you drop it, but if you do, all hope is not lost. Pricey and worth it.

Sharp!

I just received the lens and have only used it once. That was for a sunset shoot. I used it on a D700 and the images were excellent. Beautiful colors and sharp. See attached image. I bought it over the 14-24 because of the ability to use filters. On this shoot early on I used a gradudated ND filter. I got one red reflection spot, which cleaned up nicely using spot removal in LightRoom. The lens seems to be very well constructed. It is an older D type lens, and has no VR. However, I bought it for landscape where it will be tripod mounted. Besides, in the 17-35mm range, who needs VR?

Sweet Lens

My most recent usage of this lens was when I was in Death Valley NP in Feb. I used the lens to photograph the salt flats at "Badwater" in the park. At 9:00pm. By the light from a full moon. The salt flats look like the image was shot at noon except that there are all these stars in the sky.

Todays technology

Todays younger photographers may not realize that only a few years ago, did we learn about correcting wide angle lenses to be more accurate. To have as much zoom capability as this lens does, and with as much flexibility, is amazing. Nikon hard at work, again !

Great Pro lens

Must have lens to round out the f2.8 series. The 70-200 has been my workhorse for years but lately I find my self reaching for this lens more often. I almost only shoot at 17mm and f5.6. It's really added to my creativity and I've really begun to enjoy shooting wide. This is a Nikon pro lens and it's as good as it's name. Tank solid, it works perfectly every time. This lens doesn't quite have the stunning sharpness of the 70-200 in my opinion but it's still near perfect in every way.

Nikon's Most Versatile Ultra Wide Lens

By Dean G.

For those of you researching which wide angle lens to buy before plunking down your hard earned cash, please allow me to point out a few things learned by experience. I shoot primarily landscape images, so wide angle lenses are constantly in my bag. I shoot quite a few moving water shots, where I use a polarizer and variable neutral density filter to get the longer exposures to obtain the effect I am looking for. Having multiple lenses is great, if you don't mind lugging them around and ca...
