Review Summary

I don’t usually leave reviews on products, but an exception must be made here. This lens is amazing. In my opinion, it is the best piece of Nikon glass I currently own. This lens, used in conjunction with the Nikon D500 and another 1.4tc give an effective focal length of 1200mm. Even at f/8 with that aforementioned setup, photos are tack sharp. The photos I’ve attached are all taken at 800mm (effective focal length 1200mm) with the built in tc activated and another 1.4tc stacked using the D500. Fine tuning the focus to your camera bodies will just add to the sharpness of this already incredible lens.

This is an amazing lens! Undoubtedly one of the best pieces of Nikon glass I own. The imagines produced with this lens are incredible. The bokeh is superb. Stack another 1.4tc in conjunction with the Nikon D500 and your effective focal length is 1200mm. I have no complaints concerning this lens

I have used this lens now for about 6 months and it is INCREDIBLE. The flexibility it provides with the 1.4 teleconverter built in is amazing and low light performance @ f4 is great!! 560mm @ 5.6 performs great also. It's a big lens for sure but worth toting it around!!

A premier example of an incredible piece of gear, This lens is truly amazing. Problem for me, at age 75, it’s just too heavy. Sad to let it go. Replaced with the 500mm PF. Would not have done if I was a little more spry.

So far, I have only used this lens for football games. It is beyond belief. You can stand behind the back end zone line and using auto focus and the built in teleconverter and keep the subject in perfect focus as he runs toward your location. I use a D5, the fastest continuous shutter action and I am blown away with the results. The tripod that comes with this bundle handles this lens very nicely and the other items are super additions to my camera bag.

I have only used this for a few days, but I am blown away by the sharpness at both edges. With the TC engaged, it is still wicked sharp, with some very slight and expected falloff. No more than my 500mm f4 FL ED with a 1.4 TC attached. I have not focus tuned it yet, and I will use it at factory settings for a bit longer. I am a 5’4” woman, and I can handhold this for a bit, the balance is VERY comfortable, but mostly this will be on a monopod or tripod. I had to sell alot of stuff to buy this, and I am NOT sorry!

This lens is everything it is reported to be and more. The resolution is mind boggling. On my D850 the photos are simply spectacular. Expensive - Yes. Heavy - Yes. Worth it - Yes, but you decide.

Nikon's newest super zoom checks all the "photography" boxes. The 180-400 is noticeably better than the 200-400 VRII. Sharpness across the frame compares with the 500/600mm primes. AF is lightning quick with the D5 body. The integrated 1.4x TC which is the big selling point, is slick Operation of the TC is fast and seamless. Zooming is smooth, the lens balances well on a body with grip and the overall versatility is off the charts. if you consider FF and DX bodies this lens can deliver a FOV of 180mm to 840mm at f4/f5.6. The lens is heavy, but the fatigue factor is no greater than the big primes From photographer's standpoint, I couldn't be happier. There are a couple of unchecked boxes. The price borders on gouging, Pro's and Prosumers are very dedicated and heavily financially invested in the brand. Nikon knows this and they took advantage with pricing There is no reason for this lens to be priced higher than the 500mm FL and there is no reason it should be priced higher than the Canon equivalent As a side note all the other $10k+ Nikon glass includes a custom hard case. With the 180-400, Nikon simply threw in the same soft case they ship with the 200-400 VRII. Cheap solution for Nikon. Delivering a stellar lens to its dedicated customer base .... A+ Price gouging and including a cheap carry case ............ F

The 180-400mm works great where: 1) light is at at a premium, for example when you are shooting in the early morning or under a canopy of trees, and you need the extra stop 2) the subjects are large and/ or you are close enough to the subject that you do not need the extra reach of an 800mm lens (and/ or 600mm + 1.4 TC= 840mm) 3) it makes sense to use something more portable than a 600mm or 800mm lens with a tripod. The 180-400mm feels just-right and is well-balanced when used in combination with the right pivot-head & monopod. A tripod is not needed to get truly high resolution shots. For a walk-around shoot, the low polar moment and significantly smaller dimensions of this 180-400mm lens, in combination with a good monopod and specialized pivot-head, is a noticeably more practical, portable, user-friendly combination than a 600mm-800mm lens-and- tripod combination.

Best safari lens ever!
By Michael M.
Took on safari to South Africa and Botswana and was amazed at the sharpness, and low light performance with a D850 and D500.
Pros who spend time behind a super-telephoto lens know a hard truth: when you need a teleconverter, you often need it in a hurry. For these moments, Nikon proudly introduces the AF-S NIKKOR 180-400mm f/4E TC1.4 FL ED VR, a super-telephoto zoom lens with a built-in 1.4X teleconverter. Capture sports, events and wildlife in lifelike brilliance from 180-400mm, then, without breaking shooting posture, engage the integrated teleconverter and increase your reach to 560mm f/5.6 (840mm equivalent on a DX body). Incorporating remarkable advancements in optical design, autofocus performance, Vibration Reduction and durability, this lens is bound to become the new standard for serious field photographers.
A NIKKOR Gold Series super-telephoto zoom lens unlike any before it.
Combining Nikon's first ever built-in 1.4X teleconverter with a new optical design, advanced lens technologies and comprehensive weather sealing, the AF-S NIKKOR 180-400mm f/4E TC1.4 FL ED VR can help pros shooting sports, wildlife and events perform at their absolute best.

When you're in the field, adding a teleconverter to a large lens can be a tense operation, especially when dust or moisture is present. With the AF-S NIKKOR 180-400mm f/4E TC1.4 FL ED VR, its as easy as flicking a switch.
Engage the 1.4X teleconverter and increase focal length to 560mm, f/5.6. On a DX camera like the ultra-fast D500, this is an 840mm equivalent angle of view.

The teleconverter switch can be comfortably operated by most using a right-hand finger without releasing the camera grip or taking an eye off the viewfinder.
Since it's integrated into the lens, the teleconverter maximizes light transmission to the sensor with very little falloff for tack-sharp images.

The AF-S NIKKOR 180-400mm f/4E TC1.4 FL ED VR draws peak performance from the 153-point AF system in recent Nikon DSLRs like the D5, D850 and D500. The sensors at the outer areas of the frame can be used as cross-type sensors*, drastically improving acquisition speed when a subject enters the frame. Enhanced servo drive control and higher-speed inversion of the Silent Wave Motor (SWM) improves tracking, even with subjects that radically change speed or direction.
*This feature will be available with a firmware upgrade for the D5, D850 and D500 as of March, 2018.
Smaller, lighter and more comfortable for handheld shooting and transport, the tripod collar also has ball-bearing smoothness for switching between horizontal and landscape shooting.
Activate AF/AE Lock, switch between AF Area Modes and more using the conveniently positioned assignable Function buttons.
At 3,500 grams, it's lighter than comparable lenses on the market thanks to a Fluorite lens element, magnesium alloy lens barrel and Internal Focusing (IF) design.
You can't chase sports, events and wildlife without getting a little dirt on your hands. The AF-S NIKKOR 180-400mm f/4E TC1.4 FL ED VR is built for the field with advanced dust and moisture sealing on all moveable parts, a rugged magnesium alloy lens barrel and protective front meniscus.
The AF-S NIKKOR 180-400mm f/4E TC1.4 FL ED VR incorporates Nikon's latest Vibration Reduction (VR) design for up to 4 stops** of shutter speed increase, even when using the built-in teleconverter. This new VR system starts up immediately after powering on the camera, and it includes three shooting modes, including one for sports and fast action and one specifically for tripod shooting.
Let the AF-S NIKKOR 180-400mm f/4E TC1.4 FL ED VR lens be your go-to choice for capturing the world with exceptional clarity and precision. Designed for the discerning professional photographer, this high-quality, advanced super-telephoto zoom lens is equipped with a seamlessly integrated 1.4X teleconverter, allowing you to swiftly extend your reach from a versatile 180-400mm to an impressive 560mm f/5.6 with a simple flick of a switch. This innovative feature is a game-changer for shooting dynamic sports, captivating wildlife, and pivotal events without the need to change lenses or lose your shooting stance.
Crafted with Nikon's state-of-the-art technology, this lens boasts a constant f/4 aperture, providing consistent exposure across the entire zoom range and enabling a shallow depth of field for stunning bokeh effects. The innovative Vibration Reduction (VR) system ensures sharp, blur-free images, compensating for camera shake and making it easier to capture clear shots even in challenging low-light conditions or at super-telephoto distances.
The durable construction of the AF-S NIKKOR 180-400mm f/4E TC1.4 FL ED VR lens is matched by its optical excellence. Featuring Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass elements and a Fluorite lens element, it minimizes chromatic aberrations and delivers images with superb contrast and color fidelity. The lens's reliable autofocus performance is both fast and accurate, ensuring that you never miss a decisive moment.
Built to withstand the rigors of fieldwork, this lens is also weather-resistant, offering peace of mind when shooting in harsh environments. Dust and moisture are no match for its robust design, making it an indispensable tool for photographers who demand durability and performance in every shot.
Embrace the power and versatility of the AF-S NIKKOR 180-400mm f/4E TC1.4 FL ED VR lens, and elevate your photography to new heights with a lens that stands as the new benchmark for serious outdoor and action photography.
