Q&A

Questions & Answers

Robert K : Is this lens a full frame use on Nikon D850?LYNNE M : Yes, it is full frame.HORACE S : Yes it can be used with D850.
Shopper : Is this lens for use on a D500 ?CAMPBELL P : It'll work fine, but since the D500 is a DX camera...2/3 frame...the actual view will be 27-53mm instead of 18-35mm. The lens takes sharp photos and is still considered a wide angle lens...even on a DX camera.ROY V : Yes it will work just fine.RUSSELL D : I use my lens on my D800 and it works great.Arthur L : Yes, as long as you understand that the effective focal length when using this lense with a DX sensor like the D500 has is going to be longer, approximately 27-52mm. If you are really looking for something that is an effective wide angle 18mm, you should look at other lenses. Perhaps the AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II? If you have other camera bodies with a FX sensor and a budget for this one: AF-S NIKKOR 14-24mm F2.8G ED.KEN R : It will work, but the d500 only uses half of this full frame lens potential. Better to get the 17-55/2.8 DX or any 18-55mmJOHN H : The Nikon 18-35mm is a full frame lens made for use on Nikon Full Frame Cameras (D5, D4S, D750, D610, D600 etc). The D500 is a DX or small sensor camera. The 18-35 will work on the D500 but the zoom range will change to about 27-53mm because of the crop factor involved in using a full frame lens on a small sensor camera. You would perhaps be better served by a DX Wide Angle Zoom.CHRIS S : This is an FX lens designed for Nikon's full frame cameras -- e.g. D750, D810, etc. The D500 has a cropped sensor. You could use this lens with the D500 but it will effecitively function as a 27-53mm lens. The Nikon 10-24mm is a DX lens that might be a better choice for the D500 if you want a wide angle zoom.MARC F : It is an FX lens, but all FX lenses work fine on modern DX bodies such as the not-yet-available D500. Do remember that because of the smaller sensor on the D500, you will get the angle of view equivalent to a 27-52.5 mm lens.
THOMAS J : is this lens fully compatible with a nikon d200?RUSSELL D : I am very sorry but I can't answer that question for you as I use the len on D800.JOHN K : Yes, all of the functions will work on the D200.SIU KAI L : Yes, it is fully compatible with a nikon d200. Any af-s mount lenses are fully compatiable with a nikon d200 as well.JOSEPH N : I use it on a d600. So I can't say yes. It is a full frame lens and standard Nikon fully auto. It should work. I love the lens. Very sharp,ERIC G : I bought this lens primarily for landscape work on my D800. However, it works just fine on my D200. Since the D200 has a smaller sensor you will not get as wide a field of view as when it is on a full frame sensor camera like the D800.HOMER W : Yes this lens would be fully compatible with a Nikon D200.Richard R : Yes, it will work fine!Arthur L : operable yes, but this is a FX lens and the D200 uses a DX sensor. This effectively makes the lens' focal length 27-52mm.SHANNON L : The Nikon D200 will accept Nikon Lenses with the F mount. This lens is for F mount cameras. The D200 has the cropped sensor so typically you would want to purchase DX lenses. This lens is a FX lens. It will still work, but it will not be used to it's fullest potential unless it is used on a full frame camera. DX lenses are for cropped sensor cameras & FX lenses are for full frame cameras.JINCHUL P : I don't think so, because the lens works only for a full frame body. D200 is a DX body, so it won't be usable.

Good for landscape and possibly real estate work.

Wanted this because of its 35mm reach. Should have bought a prime 35mm instead. This zoom is worth it if you're into landscape work.

Much more useful than I thought it would be...

After years of shooting Nikon (I moved up to "F" film products in early 80s), this was my first wide angle zoom. I was concerned the slow speed would be a hindrance, but that hasn't been the case. I've used this lens more than any other I own, simply because it works so well indoors. The digital bodies I have (D600, D750, D5600) all have more than enough sensitivity to allow hand-held shots indoors without flash. 18mm is wide enough for almost any situation, no matter how tight. It's light weight is a big advantage. It's amusing to think that I have both a 35mm f1.4 and a 35mm f2 prime, yet I've taken more pictures by far with the long end of this lens (35mm f4.5). Highly recommended

Very nice lens

... except the tulip lens shade is fragile. Adorama replaced it. I superglued the broken one; however, that only held up for a couple photoshoots. Time will tell.

Why does it still work

One beautiful summer morning on the dock I was photographing the sunrise and while changing lenses this one dropped into the water. Well I figured that it was instantly ruined so I did not jump in right away. I finished my coffee, made breakfast for my boys and asked them to go diving for it. Out it came; left it out to dry and put it away. A few months later I thought I would give it a try. Everything worked! Not a single sign that it had spent 4 hours in the lake.

The Bee's Knees

This is the best ultra-wide angle that Nikon makes. It's BETTER than the 16-35mm and just as sharp as the almost $2,500 14-24mm! On the D800, DXOmark gives the 18-35mm a sharpness rating of 17 P-Mpix. How about the holy trinity 14-24mm? They also give it a 17 P-Mpix. That right, the sub $1,000 18-35mm is just as sharp as the legendary 14-24mm. This lens is a beast! I own it and recommend it. If you’re thinking about it, don't! Just go buy it. There is a reason it's almost impossible to find used on Kijiji... no one ever parts with them! They are just that good.

No vibration reduction for a man with tremors.

Bought this lens some time ago. IT is very sharp but as it has no vibration reduction and I have familial tremors, I can't use it much. IT would be better for me if it had VR.

Great mid-high level wid-angle at a fraction of the cost

A welcomed and noticable upgrade from its predocessor. Slightly less coverage than the 18-35D, but much sharper and surprisingly less distortion (bowing) and chromatic abberatiin around the edges of the lens. I use it for architectual work, and am exteemly pleased with the results. I had done my research, and for its perpose, everything rated this above the 17-35mm, at 1/3 the cost of the 14-24, which I would love to get my hands on as well! Since this was an upgrade for me over the previous model, I had lots of reasons to be skeptical for the cost, I wasn't gaing a wider or greater focal length, nor aperture stops, but am 100% pleased with its results and sepiriority over the D version.

Simply perfect

This lens stays on my D750 most of the time. All my lenses are fast lenses (f/2.8 or faster) so i was a little hesitant when purchasing this lens. but i have yet to miss f/2.8 with this thing! It is amazingly sharp and focuses fast. it is simply perfect!

Compact binoculars with excellent clarity

These binoculars are perfect for my purpose - zeroing in on the birds at the numerous feeders and bird baths surrounding my yard. They are small, wonderfully lightweight, and the clarity is exceptional. And even though I use them mostly at home they fit perfectly in my camera bag or day pack for a hike and they take little space in my baggage when traveling. Yes, you do have to refocus slightly when zooming in but I don't find that the hinderance that others have commented on. I am perfectly happy with my purchase.

Sharp Compact FX Wide Angle Zoom for capturing Landscapes and Street Scenes

I purchased this excellent wide angle for use on my D610 and D750 along with the Nikon 16mm-85mm VR Zoom to shoot U.S. Coast Guard events, landscapes, architectural exteriors/interiors, and urban transportation infrastructure. The lens compact size, low weight, and zoom range favor portability when traveling and utilizing two cameras at the same time. I also utilize these lenses on the D610 and D750 with a Nikon 70-200mm F4 VR zoom, 80-400mm VR zoom. I also use for long distance traveling to Japan, Europe, and Greece a Nikon D7100 and D7200, but substitute Nikon's excellent DX lenses; DX 10-24mm Wide angle, and a DX 16-85mm VR zoom to mirror closely the same zoom ranges on the full frame bodies that I purchased after owning the D7000, D7100, D7200 that I use 60% of the time, when travel weight or the 1.5x factor is of benefit. I get excellent publishable results from the Nikon 18-35mm wide angle when used on the full-frame D610 and D750 at a significant cost reduction from Nikon's faster pro-wide angles. It does a good job of replacing my older Nikon 20mm F2.8 AIS lens--and with improved flexibility, sharpness and optical quality.

Great Performance at a Bargain Price.

Like everybody else, I was struck by the lightness of the 18-35mm. Used on my D750 and D7200, it balances almost perfectly. Colors are rich and saturated throughout the focal range, with crisp detail and sharp contrasts. As a result, landscapes have a almost 3-dimensional immediacy. All of this assumes good light of course; for interiors expect to break out the tripod or use supplemental lighting. At f/3.5 this isn't a fast lens, but it's a bargain at the price and a great walk around lens.

Awesome lens very Light!

I grabbed one of these when I bought my D600 and it is an amazing lens. I don't think there is any way to beat it for price, sharpness, color quality and weight! It hardly weighs anything mounted on a D600! Just an amazing product. feels a little light when on a D700 or D800 but still works awesome! One upgrade it could have is VR for some nice wide video shooting but it is so light its not even that bad. 100% recommendation!

Really a 4.5 Star lens but worth rounding up since that number is not available

I have had this lens for a number of years. I find it to be a very reliable, very sharp lens that is in the true sweet spot of wide angle zoom lenses. Do I wish I had the the 16-35, F4? Hardly ever to be honest. I am a landscape and nature photographer (But no birding, those photographers have infinite patience where mine is pretty vast but finite!). I spend a lot of time in the canyons of northern AZ (Grand Canyon and slot canyons) and southern UT and this lens has served me well with prints up to 24". I rarely need to venture below F4.0 so extra 1/2 stop distance does not play a role in my decisions. The 16-35 weighs nearly twice as much and that adds up over the day regardless of the neck strap as I am now in my mid-60's. If you are a pro go for the big glass, if you see yourself peaking at being a very advanced amateur, like me, this will serve you well IMHO. Best wishes one and all.

Excellent Value

I agree with most of the posters here, this is a great lens for the price. It is very light and hits the sweet spot for very-wide to semi-wide. I do a lot of travel photography and usually have my 28-300mm on my D750. After one recent trip, I noticed that 80% of my photos were taken at 28mm, it's really a favorite of mine. Swapping this lens on, I still have the 28mm any time I want it, but can get some great landscape shots at 18mm also. This lens is sharp as a tack and is a worthy addition to my collection.

Very sharp & very light wide angle!

I use this zoom lens during long hikes and weight is important. While it is very small & light, it produces outstanding sharp pictures from center to edges. I use it with a D750 and all the pictures are tack sharp with vivid colors. AFS is very fast and right on, never missed a picture. Build quality is high, smooth zoom action... For its price, it is definitively a bargain. One of the best wide angle competing with (and surpassing) much higher price lenses in its category. I wished all the lenses had the same ratio Quality/price

super lens for the money

This is a beautiful lens for the money. My copy is a refurbished, but it looks and works like new. The lens is very light weight, a great virtue for lugging it attached to my D600 on long hikes. This also makes operating the lens/camera on a tripod much easier than beefier lenses. Best feature is the impressive sharpness at all focal lengths. The level of detail in close objects is just astonishing on the D600. Even distant objects show definition I just would not expect to see. All told, for the money you just cannot go wrong with this sharp, lightweight beauty. It doesn't carry the Nikon gold ring, like the 16-35, 17-35 or 14-24; but it SHOULD.

Sharp Lens

One reviewer below spuriously asserts that the lens is not sharp. Incorrect. I have 24x36in photo taken with the lens sitting in my house. It is amazingly sharp. Check the DXOmark scores, for instance. The colours are remarkable, too.

Great inexpensive wide angle

I originally purchased this lens for real estate photography and have ended up using it for much more than that. It is a great wide angle lens however I do regret not investing in the 17-35 f2.8. So far it is held up to all that it has been faced with. Only complaint is that the lens is so light that it feels cheap. In this case cheap does not mean low quality in any way.

Great lens. It was this or the 16-35 VR and I decided that I did not need VR so much at this length. Equally important is that this lens is much lighter.

One of the better

I use this for my current job, photographing cars. It does a great job letting me work in tight areas while I'm still getting the whole view with very little distortion. The lens flares it produces at the right angle are pretty darn sweet too. :D

Wide enough and very, very sharp !

The experts say it has vignetting and distortion, but I haven't seen any of those in normal shooting. But I can see the clarity and sharpness in every shot, even if I shoot wide open. It's light and small and nothing is moving while zooming or focusing (the front glass element is moving in and out just a fraction while zooming, but it all happens behind the filter, so no problem there) The zoom is so nicely dampened that it makes you play with it for the sheer fun. It's the most inexpensive new wide zoom from Nikon but they made it awesome (for the price) I'm happy :)

WELL DONE, NIKON

By David-eye

The shape and handeling of this lens reminds me of one of my all time favorite Nikon lenses, the 17-35 f2.8. The fact that it is lighter and cheaper is a good thing for me and the kind of shooting that I do at this focal range. The best news is that it has better edge-to-edge sharpness than that lens. IQ wise it falls between the great 16-35 VR and the venerable 14-24 lenses, but of course once again in a more compact and lighter package. It certainly cannot compete with those lenses for lowe...

Light lens with incredible sharpness

By NilonGSpringPatch

love this lens, just got it and cant imagine how light it seems... pictures are real sharp with great colors and replication of what you see. I was excited to do landscapes using this lens and no noticeable softness at the edges was found at the edges.

The AF-S NIKKOR 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5G ED is an ultra wide-angle zoom lens that covers the ultra-wide to wide-angle 18-35mm range of focal lengths with a minimum focus distance of 28 cm. This high-performance lens is equipped with two ED and three aspherical lens elements for superior optical performance, yet weighs just 385 g and is compact enough to offer excellent portability.

The AF-S NIKKOR 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5G ED is also equipped with a Silent Wave Motor (SWM) for quiet autofocusing, as well as two focus modes autofocus with manual override (M/A) and manual focus (M) for excellent functionality. This lens maximizes the incredible performance of digital-SLR camera with ultra-high pixel counts, such as the D600, for superior rendering. In addition, its compact, lightweight size makes for an extremely portable FX-format system when used with the D600.

Now you can cover the highly useful zoom range of 18mm to 35mm (27-52.5mm on DX-format cameras) with a great performing full-frame NIKKOR lens that doesn't carry a professional's price tag. Shoot beautiful wide-angle architectural shots, landscapes, group portraits and more; then zoom in for a natural field of view that is slightly wider than what we see with our eyes.

You can even get as close as 0.92-feet from your subject! And since the AF-S NIKKOR 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5G ED is powered by Nikon's Silent Wave Motor (SWM) for ultra-fast, ultra-quiet autofocusing, it's an ideal choice for video applications.
