Questions & Answers

Meredith U : Is this lens compatible with the nikon D70?MIGUEL D : I have been using it on D80, D200 and D700 cameras.... I have never tried it on a D70. However, it is my understanding that it will fit on any Nikon D camera....EDGAR G : I am sorry but I have no experience with Nikon D70 camera.JOSHUA W : yesALLAN W : Sorry, not sure. Think there's a lens compatibility for Nikon on web, Google it. I have a d80 and it works fine. I like it because it's much smaller than my 18-200, which I love but it's big.ASHER H : yesTHOMAS F : Meredith, from what I found on the internet this lens is not listed as being compatible with the D70.
Zachary V : Does this really come with a lens hood? Its in the pictures but not the description.PHILIP N : Yes the nikon hood is includedARTHUR S : No lens hood comes with this lens (which is one of the few exceptions for Nikon). I think what you may be looking at in the pic is the rear lens cap.HASMUKH A : It all depends on if the package deal included the hood or not but you certainly get the lens cover. Adorama does configure the package sale differently from time to time.HASMUKH A : You get the lens cover but not the hood.BRIAN D : Yes, it did for me at least.Nina D : The lens hood is not included with this lens purchase. I had to purchase my hood separately and it looks like the one in the pictures which, I agree, are misleading. However, the item listing showing what's included in your purchase is accurate.RICHARD M : Yes.JOHN B : No it doesn't. The lens takes a Nikon HB-69 lens hood (SKU: NKHB69), which, when I bought it, was another $24.95. Great lens...just surprising that it didn't come with a lens hood to begin with!FREDERIC P : No. As the listing states, the package includes: Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S DX VR II Lens for DSLR Cameras LC-52mm Front Lens Cap LF-4 Rear Lens Cap Nikon 5 Year USA Warranty (1 Year International + 4 Year USA Extension) I'm not sure why the lens hood is shown (as is the soft case) except perhaps as add-on accessories.
CARLA E : is this compatible with the nikon 5300?BILL I : Works fine on my 7100.GLEN M : Yes - This lens is compatible with all of Nikons DX camerasJON P : Sure it is, this lens is the basic DX kit lens designed for everyday use - it wouldn't work for the D800 or D600-610 FX cameras. It has less barrel distortion than the wide to very telephoto lenses like the Nikon 18-200mm. But obviously, not as flexible if you want to carry just one lens. I got mine to use for video, the VR is essential and this lens is very light on my primitive steady-cam-like device.ADRIAN V : I have a D7000. It works perfectly so I assume it should work with a more current body

The 18-55 mm lens itself appeared to be fine

The 18-55 mm lens itself appeared to be fine, but it was the fit, or misfit, of the "appropriate" Nikon lens hood that had me sending this back to Adorama in a few days. Cheap, plastic and a fall-off-a-minute performance, I could not believe that engineers saw this as a good product combo and put it on the market. My old, 18-55 mm put this new one to shame. With a metal lens hood no less. Sturdy and firm. Wish the old one would have lasted a lifetime but, after all, it is a kit lens. I am going to be looking at Tokina and/or others to answer my need for a new zoom in this category. And I am a lifetime Nikon user.

V2 of Nikkor Lens

I had the V1 for this 18-55 Lens. V2 has additional feature and seems to produce sharper focus than the previous.

A review

Only took some test shots with the lens and they were sharp. Gave it 4 stars because the manual focus ring is hard to grasp. Minor inconvenience. Recommend this lens.

Its a solid lens with a decent build quality

This lens is amazing, the fact that it came with my D3300 as a kit unit is even better. I have to say that I was skeptical at first, but after getting out of the auto mode with my DSLR and being fully in control of my camera, shooting in RAW mode, processing my files with the View NX, photoshop & lightroom applications the results from this lens are truly amazing. This lens will handle most situations you might want to capture ranging from travel, landscape, cityscape, architecture & night-time photography. Even after purchasing other lenses such primes and ultra-wide angles lenses, I still find myself mounting this lens to my DSLR and using it for most situations. Some sample images all taken with the 18-55mm lens + D3300 DSLR Note - The last image is a panorama composed of 10 individual shots assembled in Photoshop.

Great Lens

I got this lens in a kit, and I have to say, it is quite wonderful. I mostly use this to get some close-up shots, though it is also great if you just want to take some quick shots. I love the versatility of the lens, as it goes from 18mm - 55mm's, it lets you cover a wide range of subjects. A few other reviews talk of technical issues, but mine has worked fine, though a bit of the silver tape around the ring has come up at an edge. I'm not a HUGE fan on the lock-release-button, but I can live with the extra security. Overall, a great product.

Excellent value for the $$$$

I bought this lens because I needed a mid-range zoom to take videos. I've used it quite a bit with videos and stills, and it is excellent value for the money. Pictures and videos are sharp and bright. .

Best place for Refurb. Lenses

I loved mine, and would recommend other fellow mates to go for the Nikon store to get any refurb lenses that you would want for your Nikon DSLR. The product works as good as new with additional warranty provided, you get more than what you pay :) Thanks, A Happy Customer!!

2016 September 12

Kit lens purchased with the D3300. I mostly shoot RAW and find the result sharp and without noticeable flaws. However, because I photograph mostly family, some stills, some street life, I cannot comment on linear distortions at wide angles mentioned elsewhere. I am satisfied with sharp prints from my Epson Pro 3880, mostly 5x7 and 8 x 10, the odd 13 x 19. However, the MAJOR FRUSTRATION is that I must push the lens button and rotate it on, each and every time before I am also able to fully use the camera. This feature is a continuing "pain in the button". It may be meant for a safe and secure lens resting position; I can only think of it as an ivory tower engineering design without any practical experience and understanding of actual consumer use of this lens.

Lens seems to work fine but I note the focus ring is in an odd place and not easily accessable. I find myself searching for it sometimes.

Small, light and sharp!

Got this lens about 3 months ago to use on my D7000 and have been more than pleased with the sharpness and color rendition of my photos taken. I leave it on the camera about 80% of the time as my "standard lens" for all purpose shooting of landscapes, people, pets and other common/frequent subjects. It's a winner.

Good All Round

This is a good all round lens and it works well in most day to day photography. VR2 makes hand held shooting easy and gives sharp results. Excellent lens for people graduating from point and shoot cameras as the results in full auto will be similar to what they are used to but it still offers enough versatility to experiment and learn when you are ready.

Great for travel.

I like to travel light. The only lens I take when traveling. Here or abroad. Enough pixels in camera to allow crop if "telephoto" needed. As for the distortion. No auto distortion control with this lens. No problem in most cases. At wide some barrel distortion on straight lines near edge. Easily corrected if desired in camera with the manual distortion control or in Lightroom or other software. I like the zoom collapse feature which allows for a very compact bag. Range of focal lengths is fine. Think of the notable photographer of past, Cartier-Bresson, Koudelka, Burri, Eisenstadt, Haas, Allard, Abell, etal and it covers the bulk of the focal lengths they used. I have ultra wides, fast single focal length, fast telephoto which I really don't like to use any more. Too heavy.

A very worthy kit lens!

The AF-S DX Nikkor 18-55 VR II lens is truly a step up for Nikon's latest, high resolution cameras. Having owned and used a number of Nikon lenses, I'm happy to have this lens with me wherever I go. For family events and travel it's especially ideal on my D3300 body. A4 enlargements from this lens are dazzling. I feel no need to carry extra prime lenses, as long as I have a kit lens that performs this well. A number of common optical problems of past lower priced kit lenses in this range have been mostly remedied. One or two stops down seems to be the sweet spot in all focal lengths. I highly recommend this as a go everywhere compact and lightweight lens!

Some Improvements; Good Glass

I own a D5200 and only one lens (50mm 1.8) and I purchased this lens to have something at the wider end. I help a friend do videos for music, and the 50mm is sometimes too long, so I wanted something wider to be used for this, and also for landscapes and group pictures as well. It is a good piece of glass, and pictures come out sharp and the colors look vibrant as well. It's not a very fast lens, but the VR works well and it's compact design (in terms of size and weight) was pleasantly surprising. The biggest problem I have with it is the distortion I experience, especially at the wider end. I can fix my photos through Lightroom and they are able to correct the distortion pretty well. Do not get your hopes up too much because it is one of Nikon's cheapest lenses, but it is a step up from the previous 18-55, and image quality has been improved on the higher megapixel DX bodies, but my main advice is: pay attention to the distortion at wider angles, and be careful of the plastic mount!

Good for close-ups

I bought the 18-55 for shooting close-ups of flowers and such. I know it's not a 1:1 macro, but the approximately 1:3 ratio works great for me. I shoot with a tripod and use a shutter release on the camera to ensure I don't have any movement on my part, and having a zoom lets me adjust my framing without having to physically move the camera and tripod. Since I use a tripod I turn the Vibration Reduction (VR) off. I use both the autofocus and manual focus, and don't find flipping the A-M switch that big of a chore. Granted it's not as slick as being able to simply override the autofocus as I can with my 80-400 that I use for wildlife, but at the price point it's hard to complain. One aspect of the lens I'm not too taken with is the focus ring itself. In order for the lens to retract to its compact closed or locked position, the focus ring is about the same diameter as the barrel, hence it's a little harder to use. It's right behind the hood thread, which is a larger diameter so my fingers automatically grip that. It does rotate freely and the zoom works freely also. Though I use the lens mostly for close-ups I have shot other things hand holding the camera. Both the autofocus and VR work well. My lens is so quiet I thought it was broken. I had to really listen to hear it do it's thing. Overall I'm satisfied with my purchase.

Beginning to wonder

Have had this lens about four years. Less than a year ago I had it repaired due to a rough spot when turning and focusing. It now appears there may be a similar problem as the shutter won't release most of the time with this lens attached. Waiting for an answer from tech support.

Useful lens

I have been looking for a small DX wide-angle prime of decent quality for ages and had come close to buying the voigtlander 20mm several times. What kept dissuading me was its fiddly nature when mounting it, its cost and lack of AF. As an experiment I decided to try the new kit lens and keep it at its 18mm length for most uses. So far I have been very satisfied. Its resolving power may not be at the level of the 35mm and 50mm primes but as a lightweight general purpose and landscape lens producing prints up to 20'' by 30" it seems to be working well on my D7000.
