Questions & Answers

Leonard G : Is the Nikon 24-120 f/4 water resistant?PHILIP V : No it's not water resistant. I would use a rain cover if using in the rain, which I have done before. Just be sure to air it out after use to make sure no moisture as entered it.PHILIP C : I have used it in light rain where the barrel got a bit damp, it is well built, but I would hesitate to claim that it is water resistant. It is a great lens and has become one of my favorites.
Shopper : Is this lens water resistant?JIMMY V : NoGREGORY S DE S : The lens has a rubber gasket on the mount and is therefore considered 'weather resistant'. It is NOT 'weather proof' by any means.IAN J : Depends what you mean by thatB. MICHAEL C : I don't think it is advertised as water resistant, but I have had the lens on my camera out in the rain for about a hour and had no problem. It was raining big time, I got soaked. Just don't take it off the camera until you wipe off both.Dese C : I would not take this lens or any, into the rain. With a moving barrel, water might enter the mechanism.RIP R : I Have been in light rain for a short time with no problems. I bought rain shields for my camera and lens when shooting outdoor sports. It is not good to get your camera or lens wet if possible.LESLIE S : No. Nowhere in the Nikon specs does is say that it is water resistant. I am always careful to keep mine in a dust and water free environment.
Shopper : I am torn between this and the 28-300. Have the old 24-120 and since I got a D800 the lens seems very soft. Anyone with D800 using this lens? What do you think?RIP R : My old 24-120 was stolen and glad it was. I bought the new 24-120 f4 and love it. I use it at football games in low light to shoot cheerleaders and players sitting on bench. also i use it for other sports when my 70-200 is too long . I use it mostly on my 700 and 800 and sometimes my 300s to get a longer focal length with a dx camera. If you buy anything from Adorama and do not like it they will take it back and you can get something else.DAN M : I'm using the D800 with the 24-120 f/4 lens and am totally satisfied with the results. Just finished two big ad assignments exclusively using this lens. Lens is super sharp, has great contrast and focuses quickly. Yes there is some correctable distortion in the 24-35mm range but my Nikon wide angle primes also have this issue.DON C : I have this same combo. It works really well. There is the expected distortion at the wide end but easily correctable. Sharp throhghout. Not too heavy and allows you to capture almost anything you want.FRAM D : Get the Tamron

Outstanding and versatile lens

Sharp throughout the zoom range. Sharp at widest apertures. This is my primary walk around and street photography lens. This lens along with my 35mm f1.8 prime are my primary landscape lenses. Highly recommended!!

Excellent performance throughout its zoom range. I use mine as an everyday walk-around lens on my D800 and it has yet to disappoint after years of use. Highly recommend!?

My overall go-to lens

In my FX format photos, I wanted sharpness at all ranges of focus; from 24mm through 120mm. I shoot landscapes at minimum aperture such as f/22. The depth of field sharpness that this lens gives me is incomparable.

Great deal of a great lens.

Very pleased with this lens. I bought it especially for a Christmas service I was to photograph. I needed a faster lens. I was not disappointed. I was able to photograph in the low light and the images were sharp and the lens responded quickly for action scenes. I am very happy with my purchase.

Good travel lens

Very good travel lens that I use on my Nikon D750. It?s a little heavy but I knew that when I bought it. No complaints so far.

The lens to carry if you're carrying only one

This lens came bundled with the Nikon D750 I bought years ago and I've used it with the D850 as my every-day go-to lens since that camera body came out. It's no kit lens. I've never looked for another general walking-around lens. It performs in every category. It isn't fast, of course, but its other qualities outweigh anything I might lose by having an f/4 lens as my utility lens.

My Everyday Lens

This lens is sharp and has great contrast. The zoom range is extremely useful for many landscapes, group photos, kids sports and travel shots. I am now in mys 60's and no longer have steady hands. The VR function is a Godsend that allows me to continue taking almost all photos handheld. If you have steady hands, the VR will give you about 3 stops of sharpness over a non-VR lens. Regarding optical distortion: Yes, there is visible barrel distortion on the edges of the frame when observed through the viewfinder. However, the image written to the memory card has this distortion automatically corrected by the camera. I am using a D610 and have updated the camera with the latest firmware AND lens distortion data. Updates are provided for your camera free of charge on this web site. Go to Software>Firmware Updates. (Unfortunately, this will not work automatically if shooting film. However, scans can be post-processed to correct distortion.) As a digital system, this lens produces excellent images on FX sensor cameras. I highly recommend this lens for FX-type DLSR's.

Fast and Great Contrast.

Wonderful contrast with sharp images and accurate color. Silent wave motor provides fast autofocus. This is my "everyday" lens on a D610. This replaced a 28-120 f/4-5.6 that I carelessly chipped the rear element. Glad I had to replace that. This 24-120 f/4 is sharper and has instantly noticeable better contrast. Please check one of Adorama's big supporters, Ken Rockwell, for his review. Review photo of the Startech USB 3.0 to 2.5" SATA Cable on Adorama was taken with this lens.

Stop selling it as a kit lens ith Pro cameras!

The worst of all mid range f4 zooms I have ever used. Although it is the most useful range, which I prefer over the 24-105mm. However I have had Canon and Sony 24-105 f4's and they are miles ahead this lens. Only good for low Mpx cameras and amateurs.

Great walk around lens

When I bought my Nikon D90, I also bought the 24-120 f3.5 - f5.6 Lens to replace my F2 AS - 80-200 zoom and get into the digital age. I soon found that prints from my digital files were not up to the quality of the ones from my film camera setup. When I had saved enough $$ I bought a D7100 and the newer 24-120 f4 zoom. Night and day difference in quality of prints - surpassing my film camera by a lot. The fixed f4 on the newer lens was also a special benefit. The older lens was soon gifted to a grandchild. I use the 24-120 f4 on all my Nikons. FX and DX and with the adapter I even use it on my Nikon 1 J4. It is very easy to use, great feel, silk movement of the focusing and zoom rings. It is well constructed. As an example, When hiking up at Lake Louise in Alberta, I dropped my camera as I slipped in some muddy part of the steep trail. It landed on a rocky surface and broke the front filter. I was at a loss as this was the only lens I had brought with me. to my delight, after wiping the mud and debris off the lend, it functioned perfectly. I very carefully finished braking out the rest of the broken filter ( do not recommend this procedure to the faint of heart) and had a fully functional/camera/lens for the rest of the week. I especially like the wide focal range, The 24 mm wide angle of the range allows for artistic compositions and for situations when I am limited as to how far back i can get from my subject. I like the great depth-of-field that the wide angle end of the lens has when doing landscape shots allowing foreground inclusion. The mid range is great for photographing people, full length potrate and gives a realistic view of the scene with little or no sceen manipulation from wide/telephoto lens. Although the longer telephoto portion of this lens is great on an FX for head shots and other moderate telephoto scenes, the lens comes on great on a DX camera like my D7100with its 1.5 x multiplier. Great for making distortion free head shots and for compressing distances and providing a more shallow depth of field. My Nikon 1J4 with it's adapter and this lens at 120 has a 35 mm equivalent of a 324 mm telephoto with an f4 aperture and quick auto-focusing. It gets some questions when around professionals, but I like it. With the quick focusing and special type glass - it is capable of producing great images coupled with the great VR on Nikon Cameras. I seldom use apertures smaller that f8, as my cameras will not auto focus beyond f8 and my eyesight is not great with the lens/camera in manual focus mode. Also, beyond f11 you will encounter increasing refraction distortion. I like Nikon's use of the 77mm filter size as most lenses today will use that size and there is a multitude of types /functions available. The lens is very quiet when focusing with my microphone not picking up any noise from the focusing mechanism when making movies. Bottom line. I really like the range adn multiple uses of thes well made lens. For me it handles most situation I encounter with finesse. I highly recommend it. Cons: wish it was a bit smaller, but it's weight gives good balance to my cameras.

Great lens

This lens is a work horse. It has a nice range and it is great to have a consistent f aperture through the range. Not like some other lenses that aperture changes from wide open to telephone range.

Best general landscape lens

I have a 24-70 f/2.8 that I leave at home in preference for this 24-120mm f/4 lens on landscape trips. I've tried both on the same scene in and see no difference in quality. This lens is tack sharp, I don't need f/2.8 in the field and the extra 50mm of zoom gives me greater flexibility in composing. More than an everyday lens, this is my go to lens for landscaping. The perfect complement to my 14-24 and 80-400 for carrying in the field for landscapes.

Workhorse

For several years this lens has been my workhorse. I've had other professionals comment this is their favorite lens. It is great to have a lens like this when you don't know what you're walking into, don't know exactly which focal length to take with you to a project - this zoom creates great images.

Best all around lens out there

This is the 2nd time I purchased this lens. I used it so much I wore the first one out. I couldn't be without one so I bought this lens and will have the other one refurbished to keep as a spare. 24 -120 mm is a perfect range for all types of subjects and f4 gives you plenty of speed with todays cameras.

My go-to lens

Ever since I purchased my FX camera, I have been looking for a lens with this focal length and speed. I'm putting it through its paces and enjoying the experience. I own several specialty lenses, but I' m finding that this lens stays on the camera more than any of the others. I call this lens my go-to lens.

Fantastic Lens

By JULIE A.

This lens is fantastic. I have compared it to my 24-70 f/2.8 lens at 35 and 70mm and to my 70-200 f/2.8 lens at 105mm and I can't see any difference in sharpness. For photographing event photography, this lens actually gives you up to one stop faster than the 24-70 lens. You lose 1 stop going from f/2.8 to f/4 but gain up to 2 stops by going from minimum 1/60 sec shutter speed on the 24-70 lens down to as low as 1/15 sec on the 24-120 lens. I have gotten sharp hand held pictures at 120mm ...

Great for weddings and special events

By JULIE A.

I photographed a wedding with this lens last weekend. All of my formals were hand held and came out tack sharp. In the past I would have had to use a tripod to get the same results. Bokeh is nice at the longer focal lengths for impromptu portraits. For the first dance, 24mm gives you a nice wide angle view of the couple and the whole room, 40-60mm gives a nice full length close-up and 100-120mm gives nice close up head and shoulders shots. As far as low light shooting - f/4 on my D700 is...
