Questions & Answers

Shopper : Is this lens compatible with my Nikon D500?
Charles R : Is this a fixed 300mm lens, or what is referred to as a prime lens? I can't see anywhere in the specs and features where it shows a minimum focal length.FRANK H : There is a switch on the lens that gives you two choices 6 meters to infinity or full range which is about 8 feet to infinity. I find in the full range the auto focus takes longer to focus.(it still fast) The only thing I shoot that close is a gray card for white balance and my color chart. My main use is high school football at night (very poor lighting condition, wide open, iso 3200 and shutter speed of 250 it gets the job done) and wild life. My 200-400 just not fast enough for the football games without getting lots of noise. Great lens that I have never regretted buying.ROBERT T : The specifications do provide the information you are seeking. If only one focal length is listed, for example 300mm or 200mm or 55mm, then the lens is a prime lens. If a range is listed, for example 75-300mm or 80-200mm, then the lens is a zoom lens. Hope this helps.Leonard C : It has only one focal length ie 300mm. It is a prime lens as opposed to a zoom lens . It's minimum aperture is F 2.8 making it an extremely fast lens. The quality is supreme.THOMAS E : This is a fixed, prime lens, and of the twenty Nikon lenses I own, it is the best. If you can afford this lens, buy it. You will not be disappointed. Build a handle to attach to the lens mount to hold it, for support, with your left hand (if you're right handed).DAVID S : Yes it is a fixed length; a fabulous lens, very sharp; but large and heavy due to focal length and 2.8 aperture.Erika G : It is a fixed lens. I use it to shoot in stadiums--concerts, football games, etc.JOHN C : It is a fixed lens. It is also one of the sharpest lenses I've ever seen. I sue this lens with the Nikon 2x teleconverter to shoot birds. The minimum focus distance is very short and allows me to shoot frame filling shots of butterflies with the same setup I shoot birds. It's expensive, but with this lens, you get what you pay for.DONALD D : It's a prime lens fixed at 300mm.CHRISTINE D : Yes, it is a fixed (prime) lens.ROBERT J : It has a fixed focal length of 300 mm, and I believe the word "prime" refers to that; i.e. prime vs zoom You cannot go wrong with this legendary lens. But I have to say that I now favor my new 80-400G AFS lens over this 300 2.8…….just barely. I love the 300 2.8 as well. I have owned three of them through the years. Have fun! Robert KingKENNETH L : This is a fixed 300mm lens, not a zoom lens. However, the focal length changes slightly with changes in focus.JAY W : This is a prime (fixed length) lens. The focal length is 300mm. The focal length can be increased through the use of teleconverters, ie., Nikon Tc1.4, Tc1.7, or Tc2.0. The resulting focal lengths would be: 420mm, 510mm, and 600mm respectively. These figures are for a full frame (FX) camera. A DX camera, which has a smaller sensor, will add in a multiplication factor of 1.5.HENRY F : 300 mm prime lens. It weights about 6 to 7 pounds, so make sure that you are able and willing to carry it around.DONALD B : This is a 300mm lens and there is only one focal length, 300mm. That means it is a fixed focal length, or prime, lens. Zoom lenses would have a focal range listed. (e.g. 70-200mm)
DAVID S : how can you protect the front of the lense?? Apparently you cannot screw a filter on the front of the lense??ALAN R : All you can do is to cover it with the soft cap that comes with it when after using it. It is a big, bulky and heavy lens but the definition is spectacular.JOHN L : Its got a pretty big hood. With the hood on I cant see it get damaged unless stuff is coming directly at you. I haven't looked for ways to protect it when it's off so I cant say.JOHN C : I haven't seen any way to protect the front element. I have 2 of these, a 400mm 2.8 and a 600mm 4.0 and they are all in the same situation. Every time I use them, I'm at risk. I keep the covers on as muck as possible. The new nylon covers don't come off as easily/quickly as the old leather ones, but that's the price you pay.HENRY F : The lens comes with a very expensive $200 to $300 carbon fiber collar that is about 4 inches in length and it screws on to and locks on to the end of the lens. Besides providing a main function of keeping the sun off the lens, it also provides some protection to the glass. The lens also comes with a padded bag type protector for when you are carrying it on your camera bag, and it also comes with a fancy padded bag with shoulder strap.RONALD B : When using the lens always have the hood cover on the lens. I have traveled the world with my 300mm lens and not a scratch. Plus I always use a mono pod when using this lensJAMES C : The lens hood is quite large and projects the glass. It is not shown in this picture.BRIAN O : Hi David, The glass at the front of this lens IS a protective filter, not a lens element. And as long as you keep the hood attached (Not shown in this photo), it will rarely need to be cleaned. Hope this helps. (It's a great lens, by the way!)MICHAEL M : To protect the lens, I leave the lens hood on and extended at all times. Between shooting and for storage, I use a Don Zeck lens cap.SHAYNE C : Don Zeck makes a storage cap that is very handy, but other than that I make sure my lense hood is always attached.KENNETH L : The front glass element in this lens is optically flat. In effect, it is a built in lens protector. However, as added protection Nikon includes a foam and nylon slip-on cover that protects the entire front end of the lens. That protective cover is a bit bulky, so I also use similar, but lighter neoprene slip-on cover. LENsCoat carries this item. There are a few third-party hard lens caps on the market also, but I have never used one. One bit of advice. This lens is big and heavy and, therefor, it is very difficult to hand hold. So, if you purchase this lens mount it on a sturdy tripod and timbale head.ROBERT J : I asked the same question when I bought the VR II. I do not think it is design to take a protective piece of glass. I believe that that piece of glass IS the protection; i.e. that piece of glass has no effect on the 300 2.8's optical formula and it is there solely to take the hit......if you get one. Also, I believe that piece of glass has been given a particular name. But just to be sure, you should check other sources to validate what I have said here. Go to one of the forums and ask them. Here, you do not have to be a member to ask a question and they will quickly respond to you and the answer will be accurate. Hope this helps Robert KingRACHEL S : The 300/2.8 has a heavy duty and long hood that screws onto the lens. Use the hood every time, and you should have no problems with the glass.

Amazing Lens

Bought this lens from Adorama 2 weeks ago, shipping and delivery was quick and easy. Already used for one baseball game and one rugby match. Wasn't sure what to expect but results were amazing. Still getting use to the autofocus with my D850, a little more challenging than the 70-200mm zoom but managed 70-80% keeper rate. Great detail and color shooting wide open. I am very pleased with this lens and highly recommend the 300mm f/2.8G. Actually got this version before Nikon issues a redesign and raises the price like they did with the 400.

Amazing lens

I waited years before buying this lens, primarily because it's pricey. It's worth it, AF is instantaneous, detail is fantastic and bokeh is beautiful - subjects "pop" and appear 3d with this lens. It accepts the 1.4 and 1.7 teleconverters very nicely too, no downside to using them. I don't have the 2x TC to test it with. Adorama's 4% kickback was without question the best deal I could find. If you're looking at this lens, buy it here.

Awesome Lens. useless bundle

I love the lens! Although I was told via a chat with Adorama that the software would be on DVD. Its a digital download. When I called them they said that was wrong! And the lens align calibration tool has really small print, mostly useless.

Great lens for wildlife

This lens is very expensive, but is a true work of art. It has 11 elements in 3 groups. It is a joy to use and gives the most sharp, clear pictures I have ever taken. It works great also to stop motion. Rather heavy, but it has a lot of glass and metal.

Fast-focus, super-sharp telephoto

An extremely fast telephoto with amazing resolution, helped, no doubt, by very effective image stabilization. Used mostly for birding. Fast focus easily tracks birds on the wing; use all the focus dots for best results. Heavy, so this is not a lens for those who prefer to hand-hold, However, the weight is no problem when mounted on a sturdy gimble head and tripod, or when supported by a bean bag. I replaced the foot with one from RRS for more adjustable support on the gimble. Couldn't be more pleased with this lens. Very highly recommended.

Greatest lens in my bag

I put off buying this lens for sometime time simply because of the price tag. I finally made the purchase and honestly cant believe how great this lens is. Even with the 1.4 converter this lens is razor sharp. Absolutely a must for anyone who shoots sports.

Can't get much better

I upgraded from a 300 F4 without VR and will never look back. It's a little heavy, but the image quality more than makes up for it. Expedited shipping was a bonus!

great lens

great lens for wildlife. you can focus down to a little more than 7 feet from your subject. So if you can stealthily approach your subject this is a great lens. I think that this lens may be able to be used hand held, if you can really steady your self. But I think it would be best used on a really sturdy tripod

Everything I heard was true

The sharpest lens I have ever used. First day out of the box and the shots were just amazing. Focus speed is unsurpassed. I shoot a lot of outdoor action photography and this lens is amazing. The bokeh is out of this world. This thing is built like a tank.

Why didn't I get this sooner?

This lens replaced a 300 f4 and the difference is amazing. Coupled to a TC-20E it is a useful wildlife and bird lens without being too heavy. The autofocus is fast and I can even hand hold this thing for a little while on a bright day. With the TC-20 autofocus still works well and very little decline in sharpness. Plan on getting a really sturdy tripod to get the best out of this lens.

Great telephoto that fits in my backpack

I bought this lens to shoot sports and events. I have found that there are situations where my 200 f2.8 just does not have the reach I need to get the shot. I had the 200-400 zoom to cover these situations but the lens was to big to be practical a lot of the time. I now take this 300mm f2.8 with the TC14 and TC20 to get all the reach I need. I also carry a second body with the 24-70mm lens on it. These two cameras/lenses plus a speedlight 910 and the two teleconverters and a monopod all fit nicely in a ThinkTank Streetwalker Pro backpack. Things that are great include: - Very fast focusing - very sharp images - natural colors The cons are the obvious ones: - It is expensive - It is too heavy to hand hold for very long All in all I would recommend this lens for any serious photographer that needs a top notch tele that they can easily carry in a photo backpack with their other gear.

Outstanding Lens

I caught photography fever 3 years ago when I finally broke down and purchased a D7000 after years of frustration with point and shoots. I couldnt get the reach / quality I wanted for wildlife with a 70-200mm F/2.8 and TC20 III. After a year and a half of struggling with settings and shooting techniques I finally broke down and purchased this lens. It's everything I hoped for and then some. Image quality is fantastic and it works very well with my TC20 III. The only problem is it makes my 70-200 feel like a kit lens in comparison.

Money Well Spent

Professionally, I design rocket motors and warheads for a living. This lens is fast and sharp enough to photograph dangerous tests from a distance (preventing loss of equipment) should there be a failure, yet record test article details with sufficient sharpness and resolution to be scientifically useful for product development or failure analysis. Personally, I enjoy landscape and nature photography so when this lens isn't doing duty at work, I use it to advantage on field trips. Though most reviewers list "weight" in the cons category, weight is a function of front element size. It's an engineering impossibility to design a 300mm lens with a fast f2.8 aperature much lighter. I routinely hand-hold this lens at a 15th of a second and still achieve sharp results. Beyond that, this lens is very well corrected, sharp corner-to-corner and very robust in construction.

Nikon 300mm f/2.8G ED-IF II AF-S VR-II

This lens will be used for shooting sporting events and wildlife. While covering sporting events, the Memory Recall and Memory Lock functions make this lens indispensable. While the lens is heavy, it can still be handheld for short periods of time. For longer usage, a monopod offsets the weight quite nicely.

Great for fast moving distant subjects.

This product is, in one word, "superb" for my main applications which are typically distant fast moving subjects and lower light situations. Coupled to Nikon's new TC-20EIII teleconverter, this combo provides the high quality and high magnification needed in a portable hand-held package.

This professional lens has a fast maximum aperture of f/2.8 for excellent low-light performance and action-freezing shutter speeds that enable you to isolate certain subjects or obscure distracting backgrounds.
Thanks to its innovative design, sophisticated engineering, and use of the finest raw materials, the Nikon 300mm f/2.8G offers unparalleled optical performance and functionality. Professional photographers will appreciate this lens for its consistent, high-quality output, fast and accurate autofocus, and durable construction.

Nikon 300 mm Lens

Superior Image Quality

Like all high-end lenses, the Nikon 300mm features a refined optical design to ensure superior image fidelity and maximum image quality. Equipped with three Extra-Low Dispersion (ED) glass elements and one aspherical lens element, this super telephoto lens offers excellent sharpness, color, and contrast, as well as highly reduced chromatic aberrations. It also features Nikon’s exclusive Nano-Crystal Coat to combat flare, ghosting, and internal reflections, as well as a Super Integrated Coating (SIC) for optimum light transmission efficiency and superior color consistency.
A rounded, nine-blade diaphragm provides a more natural and pleasing appearance to out-of-focus areas—which means better, more attractive bokeh.

Fast, Efficient, and Silent Operation

Professional shooters need to keep up with the action, which requires a lens that responds quickly and enables them to focus and shoot at lightning speeds. Nikon’s 300mm super telephoto lens has three focusing modes for maximum AF control versatility, allowing you to quickly switch between auto and manual focus. It also features the AF Memory Recall to allow you to instantly return to a predetermined focus, and the Nikon Silent Wave Motor (SWM) for fast, accurate, and silent autofocusing.
