Questions & Answers

Shopper : is this lens compatible with a D90?STEVE V : This lens will function with the D90, but only with the aperture wide open (f/4). This is because the D90 lacks the electronic functionality for automatic aperture control that this lens requires. VR and focus (both auto and manual) work fine. I have a D70s (which is from the same class as the D90 only two generations older) and I've tried with my own 300 1:4E PF ED and it works fine except for the aperture being fixed. You'd need a D7000 or newer, D300 or newer, or any of the FX bodies to get full aperture control with this lens.RANDY S : No it may auto focus with the electronic diaphragm that the lens have will not work with a D90
Rolf B : Does the Nikon TC 20EIII or TC 1.7II allow autofocus & VR when combined with Nikon 300 f4.0 VR PF and mounted on D810?EDGAR E : YES.NORMAN C : Yes. I use the 1.7 all the time and AF is fast and quiet. I use d800 and not D810 but I am sure it will AF the same.FRANCIS M : The TC20EIII fully works in tandem with the Nikon 300f4 VR PF when attached to a D800. I can't answer regarding the D810.PERRY M : I own the TC-14EIII, not the 1.7, but both the 1.4 and TC 20EIII work fine with the 300 PF on my D810. Love the lens, compact and sharp.DELMAR M : I use the TC1.7II on my 300 F4 PF lens. The TC20EIII should work but the final word is to go to the NIKON USA web site. They have a PDF in the help form that list compatibility of all 1.4/1.7/2.0 for all lens and all versions of the tele-extender. Nikon is really good at keeping this up to date.JERRY C : I haven't tried those combinations, but the TC 1.4 works with full functionality between the 300 f/4E PF ED lens and a D800 body.FORD M : It would be a good idea to check directly with Nikon.William B : I do not have the TC20, but it does work with the TC17.
Kim W : Will this work on a Nikon D7100?DAVID M : Yes it will. On a 7100 it will perform with an effective magnification of about 9 power. It is a very sharp lens.EDGAR E : Yes, but it's an FX lens and the D7100 is a DX camera.GROVER H : YES IT WILL...HAD MINE FOR A MONTH NOW...A VERY SHARP LENSE...HAS A PROBLEM WITH LOW LIGHT [HIGHER ISO]...FOCUS WANTS TO SHIFT AROUND...SUNDAR C : I use it on a D750 but it will work on D7100 too. This is a great lens from Nikon, very light and makes hand holding to shoot bird photography a breeze.FRANK D : Absolutely.DELMAR M : Of course it will work on the D7100. On this DX body it will provide a 450mm equivalent prime lens. On a FX body it's a 300mm lens. I have used mine with terrific results.JAMES Y : yes, apparent focal length will be 450mm due to smaller sensor. I have had no VR issues-- works great, even shooting at 1/60 sec.JOHN K : On a "C" sensor it will be a 450mm fixed lens. I have used this lens with a 2X extender that would push it to 900mm on a "C" sensor and f8 at the widest aperture. It's a great lens with the added advantage of being light enough to hand hold.FRANCIS M : Certainly. I use a Nikon D7200 (which replaced My D7100). I gain a 30% increase in reach over full frame cameras due to the smaller sensor that both the D7100 and D7200 have.DONALD C : Yes and it works quite well. This is one impressive lens in all categories.WILLIAM P : Yes it will work on any modern dx or fx body by Nikon from about 2007 onward. Keep in mind it has an electric aperture motor instead of a mechanical linkage, but the D7100 is completely compatible.KEN R : Works GREAT!!ROBERT D : YesMELANIE N : Yes, I have a D7000 and it works very well. Very sharp, very totable. I have a tc 14iii teleconverter on it also, and that works fine also. I love this lens.WARREN S : Yes. It will be the equivalent of a 450mm on a crop format camera.TIMOTHY G : I'm not the expert on this question; however, it should. All Nikon cameras and lenses use the same mount. The lens isn't DX format, so I assume some functions may not be available. The lens is made for the "higher-end" FX cameras. I have used the lens on an older DX format camera and noted that the autofocus was kind of slow.JERRY C : I haven’t tried this lens on a D7100, but it should work on that body. I’ve used it successfully on the D7000 and the D7200. It’s designed to fit Nikon full-frame bodies, but it should work equally well on this group of cropped-sensor (DX) bodies. Keep in mind that the effective focal length on a DX body such as the D7100 will appear longer than on a full-frame body, because the lens projects an image larger than the cropped sensor. This could be an advantage when shooting small subjects at long-distance.KEN E : It works on any Nikon DSLR full frame or cropped like the D7100. Its light and razor sharp and works well with the TC14 II and III.KEVIN L : The simple answer is yes it will mount to your camera. However, because the 7100 is a dx (cropped) sensor, the 300 mm lens will act more like a 450 mm lens. The 300 mm was built for full frame sensors. But if you want a light weight 450 mm lens, this one will be great. All the electronics, auto focus, etc will work finePeter G : yesSkip B : I do not own a Nikon D7100 but it should work just fine.WILLIAM L : Yes -- and it's an awesome lens. Really, really sharp; nice close focus. I use it almost like a macro lens.

Review of the Nikon 300mm F/4E PF ED AF-S VR lens

I specifically bought this Nikon 300mm PF lens to be a 600mm lens using my Nikon TC-20E III teleconverter and the Nikon Z9 with FTZ II adapter as I wanted to use it for travel. It is light and hand holdable rather than bring a heavy Nikon 180-600mm zoom lens. Upon receipt of the UPS package, I immediately tested it from my second floor guest room taking images of my neighbour doing his landscaping and several birds on my backyard. The images are sharp but there are instances where the image is a bit blurry and I can attribute this to my technique which needs to be polished to capture images of fast moving objects.

Just Phenomenal

The shots I get with this lens are so good as to be unbelievable they were shot with a 300mm lens. You can focus so close, it's like having a 300mm macro lens. I use it on a D810. I had some problems initially, especially with a 2x teleconverter (focus breathing). But I just updated the camera's firmware, and now I actually prefer to have the 300mm on the camera for outdoor work. I really don't lugging more than I need. And I have enough experience to just 'make it work' if I have something close to what I need It's what I use most of the time outdoors. I also have a 500mm f/5.6, 70-200mm f/4 for more closeups, and a 24-120mm f/4 for casual and practical shots. Long ago I shed my film equipment while it was still worth something, before digital became the goto. I kept one N90s and 5 lenses. Back then I was dating a girl who worked at Helix Photoart. So, I got her discount. And I rented a lot of equipment. That's not so common today. But I'd definitely recommend the 300 f/4. It is just phenomenal.

Beautiful Lens

Purchased this lens with my D850 and the sharpness of the image through the view finder is amazing, and images so far produced has exceeded my expectations for clarity. The lens is lighter than my 28 to 300 that I replaced it with.

This Lens Alone is Enough Reason to Shoot Nikon

I can't say enough about how incredible this lens is. Small, light, super sharp, so far beyond my expectations. My 300/2.8 is going to be getting much less use now.

Great lens.

Have had limited opportunity to use the lens, but based on 100 or so images, I think I’m really going to love this lens. After getting this to go with my 500mm PF, I sold my 200-500mm lens. It was a quality lens, but just too heavy for me to tote around.

Fast, sharp and light weight!

Fast and sharp, this lens not only gave me the sharp prime at 300mm, but also gave me the equivalent of 450mm on my DX camera and 630mm when coupled with my 1.4x teleconverter and at just over 3 lbs. This will be the combination to travel with as my 5.5 lb 200-500mm stays home.

Lightweight Wonder

While waiting for my new 500mm PF lens, I decided I needed a telephoto lens to carry me over until whenever my new lens will get to my camera store here in Oregon. Well, the 300mm f/4 PF is a great choice! Sharp images and paired with my 1.4 TC and my D500 body, gives me the reach to capture wildlife including small birds. I can only hope the 500mm f/5.6 PF performs as well! It is so nice to carry this lightweight wonder on hiking trips and not get weighted down like I did with my 200-500mm f/5.6. P.S. Please let the the PF lens crafters know to send my 500mm PF lens to Focal Point Photography in Dallas, Oregon, before my Alaska wildlife trip in September!

Happy with the 300mm PF lens

This is such a powerful lens for its size and weight! I simply put it in my backpack everyday and nobody notices anything! Having shot 150-600mm for 2 years I was not sure if this lens plus the 1.4x Tele-converter would be long enough, but so far I haven’t felt any serious drawback. Great product! When I called to place the order this product was shown as Back-ordered and was told it might take over a week before it could be shipped. But I received it well within a week! A bonus:)

Excellent lens.

I bought this lens as a small addition to my daily bag. Since it is so small, I carry it all the time, and I am able to use it many times when I would normally have needed a backpack to carry my 300/2.8. It is a great addition to my gear. You can’t use a lens you don’t have with you. For that this lens is superb. It is sharp, and can be used with all 3 TC’s. I highly recommend this lens.

A small package for great pictures

I use this lens with or without TC 14 III on d7500 + a SB-5000. I selected this one mainly for birding. As I walk quite a bit, I needed a kit that would be light and excellent. It's exactly what I found with this lens. The quality is without compromises, I can only say that I am more than satisfy with this product and I can only recommend it.

Sharp quality lens and light weight

AAfter a first time in which my order was shipped by Adorama and lost by UPS on the way, I ask to Adorma customer service for re-order the lens. Good service of Adorama but very bad experience with UPS. After that I receive three weeks later my lens The lens is solid, high quality like all Nikon products, his optical quality is sharp and is ligth weight. I had no time to make comparative test of this lens + 1,4 Nikon teleconverter and a Nikon 200-500 zoom.

Decent oveall - lightweight for sure

The main draw of this lens is that it is lightweight. And it certainly is. Optically, it is OK. A little less sharp than I would expect - especially for a prime lens. I also just bought a Tamron 150-600 and shots taken at midrange are at least as sharp as the Nikon PF f4. Both my Tamron and Nikon 70-200 zoom lenses are far sharper and more versatile. Adding a Nikon 1.4 teleconverter is almost a disaster (there is a negative review of the teleconverter in the works - which was a surprise based on reviews I had read which were positive). I mention that because I tried the combo in order to get a lightweight method for long-range shots. Bad idea. So it is a very nice lens for quick and dirty purposes and for those completely averse to carrying a lot of weight.

Great lens, reduced weight and size

this is a great 300mm f/4 lens , both for telephotos (in the mid range 50 to 200m) and in the near focusing range of 2-3 m. The only problem that I am aware of: lots of optical artifacts and flare appear when photographing directly into a bright sun, but not moon. Cannot provide exact optical performance data such as those that DXO and others generate.

300mm review

This lens works perfectly on my D500, it's fast and light. It DOES NOT WORK on my D810, where it produces "dual images" when the VR is ON, between 1/60 to 1/250 second.

An amazing lens

By Wigwoff

I have been waiting for this 300mm lens with VR. I so nearly purchased the earlier non-VR version, and I'm sure I would not have been disappointed; however having VR makes this so much more useable, and a pleasure to use at that. The most impressive thing, though, is the weight. It's so light compared with anything else that gives you this reach. I find the handling is also superb, feeling well balanced and easy to work with on my D800. The optional RT-1 tripod collar is available. I've got o...

Revolutionary lens

By Thejohnz

I purchased this lens directly from the Nikon store in April of 2015. My reason was due to availability and confidence that the VR issues with this lens had been corrected. I own a lot of Nikon equipment. This lens was of great interest as a replacement for the Nikkor 300mm F2.8. I loved this 6.4 pound lens, but the weight and size was becoming a real issue for me. Upon receiving the Nikkor 300mmF4 VR lens, I checked it out first for sharpness and focus, then for any VR problems. Let me fir...

Over the years, Nikon has been a pioneer in the world of photography, consistently delivering high-quality and innovative products. The AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/4E PF ED VR lens is no exception. This revolutionary lens is a game-changer for professional photographers and serious enthusiasts alike, offering a new level of optical performance.

This lens is the world's lightest full-frame AF lens, weighing just 755g and measuring a mere 147.5mm in length. This remarkable size is achieved through the use of a Nikon-designed Phase Fresnel (PF) lens element, a first for the NIKKOR DSLR lens lineup. This unique feature not only enhances handling but also delivers exceptional sharpness and clarity with virtually no chromatic aberration or ghosting.

The AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/4E PF ED VR lens is engineered to draw peak performance from high-resolution full-frame cameras. When combined with an Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass element and Nano Crystal Coat (N), it delivers strikingly clear, accurate images. Nikon's Silent Wave Motor (SWM) provides ultra-quiet, ultra-fast autofocusing with seamless manual override, ensuring precision and versatility in every shot.

The lens also features a fast f/4 maximum aperture and a rounded nine-blade diaphragm that produces beautiful bokeh. A highly accurate electromagnetic diaphragm mechanism ensures consistent exposures, especially when shooting at high frame rates. For greater reach, this lens is compatible with most Nikon Teleconverters, allowing you to work in nearly any light, at any distance, with outstanding sharpness and contrast.

The AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/4E PF ED VR lens also boasts 4.5 stops of Vibration Reduction (VR), providing an image stabilizing effect equivalent to a shutter speed increase of 4.5 stops. This feature enables you to capture sharp, clear handheld images in low light, of fast action, and more.

Whether you're shooting fashion, portraits, nature, wildlife, sports, or action, the AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/4E PF ED VR lens is an indispensable tool that will help you capture stunning views of the decisive moment. Experience the power of a Phase Fresnel lens in a revolutionary 300mm format with this cutting-edge Nikon lens.
