Shopper : Will this work on a Nikon D5100? Also, what is the difference between DX and FX?DIANN L : This lens will work on film, FX and DX.ADDIE W : Technically, yes this lens will fit on the D5100. But the D5100 doesn't have its own focus motor in it, so if you want to use auto-focus instead of manually turn the end of the lens, you need a lens with a focus motor built in. And this lens does not have its own focus motor. So while it could certainly work, I probably wouldn't recommend it for use on that particular camera.
Also, FX stands for Full-frame sensors - that's a camera with a large internal sensor that's roughly the size equivalent of one full frame of 35mm film. DX are cropped sensors - cameras with a slightly smaller sensor. Lenses and cameras come in both DX and FX. [The D5100 is a cropped frame, or DX camera.]
Lenses like this one that are FX will technically fit on a DX camera, but the resulting photo will be limited by the smaller size of the DX sensor. And a DX lens will technically fit on a FX camera, but the resulting photo will be limited by the cropping size of the DX lens. I hope that makes some sort of sense. Good luck!CARL K : A Nikkor FX lens is for full size 24mm x 36mm camera sensors. The Nikkor DX are for the smaller 16mm x 24mm size camera sensors. The D5100 uses the DX lenses, however if you THINK you might go to a full-frame camera later, get the FX lenses.PAUL M. F : This lens does NOT have an internal focusing "motor". Conequently, the D5100 can mount and meter this lens, but autofocus will NOT work. The difference between FX and DX is the size of the sensor. FX is about the size of a 35mm film frame, DX is approx 1/3 smaller. FX lenses are very usable on DX bodies, but result in a cropped image. Correction factor is 1.5...multiply by lens focal length...so this lens will SEEM like a"normal" range 52.5mm focal length. Good shooting!
Meredith M : Will this lens work on a Nikon D40x?Joel H K : It will work, but it is a full frame, not DX lens
LEON B : will this work on a nikon D60?KOHL M : If your camera doesn't have an internal AF motor, you won't have the autofocus feature. It will still mount and your light meter will still work, but it will only work in manual focus. If you're shooting on a camera with a DX sensor, I'd recommend the 35mm 1.8 G over this, unless you're planning to upgrade to full frame.GRANT H : regrettably it won't work on the d60 or similar models. The d60 can only autofocus with AF-S lenses with built in AF motors. It can be mounted and shot with, if manual focused, though.GEORGE P : Should work fine and have the added benefit of working if you get an FX camera. Nice, light, sharp little lens.
