I bought this to get me started with my D610 a few months ago, and have been very impressed with most every shooting situation. In lower light it does hunt sometimes, and I kinda wish I would have sprung for the 1.4D or 1.4G, but I don't anticipate this being my most often used lens. If you need a good general purpose lens that gets really great detail and pleasant background blur at larger apertures, this is a solid value. Even on my first use of it, without really knowing how to exploit my D610, I got some impressive results (relative to my previous results). It's a safe bet to buy this because of its incredible price. Nikon really gives you a lot of bang for your buck with this one.

I received this lens as a hand-me-down from a friend and even though I have newer lenses it has become my go-to lens. It's fast and sharp and never lets me down.

I was excited to get this lens and shoot, but I soon discovered that the auto focus function is NOT supported with my Nikon D5500. I had to extensively Google it, instead of seeing it and avoiding purchasing in the products specs. Disappointed, I wasted my time and money.

I found this lens was incompatible (for autofocus) with my Nikon D3100. Unfortunately, there is no information on the website to warn you about this; the specifications do not mention it. I am now faced with having to find a Nikon camera which is compatible with the lens! However, without any information about which models are compatible with this lens, I am stuck. I cannot comment on the kens because I have not been able to use it!

All these af-d lenses are incredible! I bought several refurbished af-d lenses to use on my D500 and my F4 film camera. They're so versitile for use on digital and film cameras. Light weight and sharp. Easy to pack. A real bargain. I've ordered a refurbished Nikon f6. I've never received a bad refurbished product from Nikon.

I purchased this lens knowing I would only be able to manually focus with it attached to my D3300 camera body. When I have been successful in taking good pictures, they have been beautiful. However, the majority of my pictures are very blurry - despite them sometimes looking decent on my camera's LCD screen. That is the frustrating part - sometimes they do look good on my lcd screen but then I review them on a larger screen, and they are blurry. I bought the lens refurbished, and I'd definitely do that again - Nikon USA brings the lens up to manufacturer's specs. However, per Nikon USA, you only have 14 days to return an unopened product. I did not expect to encounter the level of difficulty I have in using the manual focus, and on Day 16 from the date of purchase, I was hoping I would still be able to return the product due to my lack of satisfaction. I do somewhat understand Nikon USA's policy, but at the same time, we've already spent a lot of money on their products. I would have probably bit the bullet, returned the lens, and come back later when we were able to spend more and get a comparable lens that would autofocus on my camera. Some told me I could rely on the focus indicator light inside the viewfinder to help me focus, and I even saw that information in multiple places online. That is not true - you only have your eyes with this lens. I'm not sure if I will ever be able to totally catch up and properly manually focus with this lens when I am using it on my camera, so that worries me. I've even had still pictures of inanimate objects turn blurry. I know it is user error; I just don't know if my human capabilities will ever be superb enough. The lens was advertised as compatible with my camera. Better photographers have told me this is difficult. If we ever get another prime lens, I think I will go with a 35mm that can autofocus. For now, I will keep practicing with this one. I am giving it three stars because it is capable of achieving beautiful pictures, but if you have camera body without a motor, it is going to be difficult to use - I wish Nikon had some kind of policy regarding customer satisfaction. I really love their products so far, except for this. I would recommend this lens, of course, if your camera has a motor to make it capable of autofocus.

I just received this lens and the reviews I read made me buy it. This lens is just what people acclaimed it is exceptional. Love it close ups, portraits and general uses, love it.

I still consider myself a beginner in Photography... I think that prime lenses are a great tool to teach yourself how to frame a picture if you are as bad as I was in the very beginning. This specific lens is simple and light and remains one of my favorite go to lens. It is versatile and can be used for portraits, close-ups and is great in low light and interior settings. At this price, it is a no brainer...

I got this lens a couple years ago when I found my dad's old FM2. I didn't know how good this lens was until I customized my picture control and shot in aperture priority. I don't know how old this lens is, as mine was made in Japan but hearing the autofocus was never a problem for me. For simply a $130, you get so much image quality and low light shooting capability that you'd be crazy not to get this lens. I shoot with a Nikon D7000 so if you have a camera that doesn't have an internal motor, are you willing to put with shooting in manual focus? I also love the contrast and the simple build. Pros: Super Sharp Image Quality Lightweight Great Glass Made in Japan (for mine at least, Nikon may have outsourced now) BOKEH Cons: If you have a camera like a D3200 or another entry level DSLR, you have to take into consideration that autofocus is not compatible Feels plasticy and tacky Is known to break fairly easily If you don't take image quality into the discussion, this lens doesn't look intimidating or even all that impressive.

The 50mm f/1.8D is the very first lens I bought along with my first Nikon. I tried them both out at the camera store before making my purchase. I found it to be a great first lens for so many reasons. Being an affordable fast prime lens is on top of that list. I've used it for black & white as well as color film photography. It is small and light that walking around photographing is not tiring. The filter size being 52mm makes it affordable to experiment with different filters. Though the autofocus doesn't work with entry-level DSLR, I'm not lowering how I rate this lens for it because the 50mm f/1.8D worked with the film camera I bought with it, F5. When I got my first DSLR, it worked just fine with it too. It focuses fast and the images are sharp and clear. When I want to be more creative than what the camera does, i manually set the aperture on the lens and manually adjust the focus to infinity for long exposures. For the price, you really can't complain about the value you get out of it. The 50mm f/1.8 is a great first lens when learning photography and provides years of use.

Bought the D instead of a G because of the slightly smaller size. Ended up exchanging it and going with the G model because it was a real tight fit when trying to mount and unmount from camera. My other lenses felt nice and smooth and easy to mount and unmount, this one felt like there was considerable amount of tension. G model did not have the issue. No complaints on the image.

Needed a good fast 50mm to fill a hole in my line up. Very pleased. Purchased as "used" with an E rating. When I opened it I could find no evidence of previous usage. It works great and I'll enjoy using this lens. Very light weight and photos are crisp and sharp.

This lens is a steal for the money . I use it with my Nikon D3200 it only works in manual focus but it's F/1.8 aperture is great for low light conditions. I have used this lens to photograph stars, landscapes and people, a nice prime lens takes better pics than the kit lens that comes with the camera.

I love this lens. I use it on my d7100 and the results have been excellent. It is great in low light, very sharp, focuses quickly, and gives great crispness and color fidelity. At the price, this may be the best bargain in camera lenses, period. I highly recommend this lens for any camera with a focus motor in the camera (7000 series or higher).

Received this lens in perfect condition! I absolutely love it and have used it for portrait photography. It has very sharp facial focus with beautiful background blur at f4, which is what I mostly use.

Been using this lens for about 8 years now. I personally didn't really like the 50mm range on the DX, but loved it on my FX. I really like the color this lens brings out, and the bokeh it produces. The only thing I find a bit annoying about this lens is the noise of the focusing when set to AF.

When a customer purchases a lens from Nikon, it is generally assumed that the product will meet the highest standards of quality and dependability. This is why I was so surprised to discover a "purple spot", or "pale blue dot" visible at lower apertures on the AF Nikkor 50 mm 1.8 D. After a great deal of trial and error, trouble shooting, and wasted money cleaning the thing, I learned, to the best of my knowledge, the purple spot is presumably caused by light bouncing off the sensor, back on the rear element lens, and back on the sensor (no, this is not glare, it is not a lens flare, or dirty lens- you can literally detect this problem from a brand new lens, fresh out of the box at a camera store). This design flaw renders the lens functionally useless at apertures lower than F11. Simply search "pale purple dot, AF Nikkor 50mm 1.8D" on the internet to see what I mean. Nikon should recall the product with the intent on discovering if this aberration represents a manufacturing error in a limited batch of AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D lenses or a larger problem, and then they should fix it. When I contacted Nikon about this, they were very respectful, but have not recognized or admitted to this common problem (to my knowledge). If you are even considering purchasing this lens, try it before you buy it.

This lens works well with my nikon d3100 even w/o the AF. I use this on just about any subject. AF would be nice though, but for the price, I don't mind doing it old school. The focus ring is smooth, It did not take me long to learn to focus manually. A great lens to bring on travels, as it is light-weight.

I have been pleasantly surprised at the quality of images I consistently get from this little lens. For the price, there isn't much to complain about. No, it's not the sharpest lens in the world when shooting it wide open - nor will it produce the best bokeh at that range - but stopped down to f/2.8-4, you'll really see it shine. It will still perform well if you need to shoot it at f/1.8, but don't expect miracles from it. That said, you can't beat the clarity and quality you're getting for the price. If you have a camera body with built-in AF, this lens is a no brainer.

Added this 'nifty fifty' lens to the rest of my lens collection and couldn't be happier with my purchase. Great all-around lens.

This lens comes with a "deadly rough focus ring". Every time I try to focus on the subject, it keeps overshooting the focus point on either side. I've a standard kit lens i.e. 18-55mm VR kit but it has a really smooth focus ring. Then I have a friend who has Canon 600D. He possesses a 50mm f/1.8 which has a INCREDIBLY SMOOTH FOCUS RING! Please Nikon! If it's a defect in my lens, please replace it or please improve your quality regarding this lens. I don't expect such a mistake from you! THIS LENS IS AWESOME OTHERWISE! Thank you!

I purchased my second Nikkor nifty fifty after I gave my neice my older one and regretted it ever since. So this purchase is a reunion of destiny for this incredible little lens that can do anything and everyting. From portraits, to landscape, food photography and just about anything its little heart desires! The autofocus is fast, I am in love with the bokeh wide open and its size and weight are a perfect match for the Nikon Df. The images are always clear, crisp and just overall nicely produced through this lens. For the price this should be in every camera bag or attached to your camera as a walk around lens. You just cant go wrong.

I bought this lens for my Nikon D7000. I'm getting more into video so I needed a lens with an aperture control ring. With bodies like the D7000 and higher you can take advantage of the aperture control ring when using AF-D lenses. You have to enable this function in the D7000's menu. Its custom function f6. When enabled the aperture ring will allow you to change the aperture in live view and while recording video, which is a HUGE plus for videographers. I also have the 24mm 2.8D which is another great AF-D lens. Both of these lenses are all I really need for video. As for image quality well its sharp! very sharp. Its actually better then I was expecting. Its a little soft wide open which is to be expected. However stopped down a bit and this lens will deliver amazing detail and color. Its built quality is just as good as other D lenses. Its made of plastic but it doesn't feel cheap. It feels solid in the hand, plus its focus ring is nice and smooth with a little bit of resistance. As for auto focusing on my D7000 its fast to find focus. Its not loud like other people complain about. I mean yeah it makes noise but its not annoying. Over all I'd buy this lens again and again. I really hope Nikon keeps all of their AF-D lenses in production for a long time. They are small and compact plus they are affordable.

Pro's: 1. Low-light capability (its obvious @ 1.8) 2. Super cheap (at this price other than this you'll probably get add-on filters) 3. Sharp beyond ~f/2.5 4. Light weight (1st time I saw it, it seemed a toy lens to me :-P) 5. Great for portraits, street photography, indoor photography. 6. Auto-focus is there except for the beginner DSLR Bodies (D3100, D3200, D5100, D5200 etc). 7. Manual focus is easy though takes practice. 8. Aperture ring is there (its a D-type) - helpful in many cases e.g....
