Not as good as the Sigma 50mm, but far more cost effective

Saw this on Ken Rockwell's site while looking for a lens that could be used for portraits. I rented both this lens and the Sigma 50mm, and there was literally no discernible difference between the two when photographing irregular objects. When photographing objects with straight lines there was some slight distortion and fading of the edges with this lens, but you'd not see it unless you were really looking for it. Can't say anything about the f1.4 version, only that this is less expensive and fast enough...not sure the extra money spent on the f1.4 version is worth it. Overall, it works very well for the money spent.

Love it so far and look forward to learning more

I have the Nikon D5000 camera and the 2 stock lenses that came in the package. This lens is a very nice upgrade to the original. Much brighter and clearer and seems like more detail. I am a rookie in my ability but this lens makes up for some of my shortcomings. I will have to work on my framing of objects with this lens as it is so different. Love it so far and look forward to learning more.

Good, sharp, light.

I use this when I know I have room and time to move around my subjects. It's a great general use lens. good for environmental portraits or small group shots. I enjoy carrying it on my camera because it's so light.
