One of the best affordable lens I've use Had to order an extra Takes sharp and clean images and the cost is not compared to the quality it offers

If you only need a long lens occasionally, this is good budget option.

Odd jumping, like a broken VR system, but takes very clean images. For the price I can't complain, but the next one will be new.

I bought my wife one of this back in 2006 or so. I had a kit of lenses then for my D70s, then D80, so I rarely used it. I sold all that three years ago and picked up a D3300, so I've been using her lens. Turns out, she didn't like sharing it so much (even though she rarely uses it) so I picked up a refurbished lens from Adorama. It looks new and came with a lens hood—my wife's did not. I used a Nikon 18-200 for years and I miss not having to change lenses, but my 18–55 and this lens take better pictures. At ($) with shipping, it's a no-brainer for those looking for a lens like this.

I was expecting something wrong or "off" because it is a refurbished lens and was pleasantly surprised that I couldn't tell the difference between this lens and a brand new one.

I'm new to the photography world but my d3300 takes crisp clear pictures with this lense! Light weight and sturdy for the price! Would definitely recommend.

I'm a beginner just getting into the world of photography and I was looking for an affordable zoom to go along with my d3300. The build quality is what you could expect from a kit lens and the autofocus is built-in, so it will work with entry level cameras like mine. The focusing speed I pretty good, I was able to take good wildlife and soccer photos, although it's not the best lens for low light conditions (f5.6 at 200mm). I don't see the need for VR since I mostly shoot during the day with this lens so I don't use slow shutter speeds. Overall I'm very satisfied with this lens, I could say it surpassed my expectations. I wish it were just a little bit sharper but I only paid ($) for it so I can't complain. It's a good buy :)

I ordered this lens on a Sunday and got it the following Tuesday. The lens is easy to use and pairs great with my 18-55mm lens. My favorite thing is the lock button. It makes it easy to store and makes it more portable. The only thing I had a problem with is I didn't know you had to unlock the lens before your camera would identify it. It scared me at first, I thought something was wrong with it! Overall this is a great starter zoom lens. Highly recommend it.

For the price... this is an exceptional lens that produces great color and bokeh. In the 150mm-200mm end, the center sharpness is amazing when stopped down to f/8 / f/11. You can't lose with this one !!! Thanks Nikon !!!

For just under $200.00 [or half that for a refurb] you can NOT beat this lens. The color and clarity are an amazing upgrade from the 18-55mm kit lens. Even though the kit lens is not that shabby. Even at close range this lens performs exceptionally well, with great detail & Bokeh.

Compact for its performance, the quality is superb, very light weight, easy to use and great characteristics, works great under different conditions, the clarity of the pictures speak for the quality of this wonderful lens. All in all a great package of features in a light and compact lens, get one you will be rewarded by the excellent quality of the pictures taken and the focus is very fast.

After much research I bought my first digital SLR camera, a Nikon D5200. To extend the camera's use I bought this refurbished model zoom lens based on its positive reviews. While using the lens it whirled and whined and would fail to focus but for the fewest times in bright light. I was unfamiliar with the use of the camera and thought the zoom lens not performing was a user error. I became so frustrated with it that I put the camera aside for months...my mistake. After attending a local photography course I was informed that the lens was not working right. Well it is too late to return it or get it fixed under the warranty period. I will say the tech service person at Nikon did clearly step me through some test and repair modes but, alas, the lens still failed. So sorry to have wasted my money and wonder what QC step was missed when this lens was sent out for purchase? I've learned my lesson I hope!

I purchase this lens when I purchased my camera about 10 months ago. The lens works fine unless you are at full zoom then things get a little sloppy. I would recommend a tripod with the VR function turned off if you are going to shoot at full zoom. Otherwise this lens works great.

When I purchased my new D3300 camera with 18-55mm VR II kit lens, the photo opportunities were immediately rewarding. However, in some situations I desired more than the available 55mm maximum focal length of the kit lens. The Nikon 55-200 VR lens has become a perfect complement. It matches my "normal" zoom lens in both image quality and ease of use, yet gives up to 3.5 times more reach. It is compact enough to fit in the same carrying case with the D3300 body and the original zoom lens, without the bulk and weight of older lenses owned in the past. I highly recommend it!

5 star reviews are a tad ridiculous for this lens. It is a decent entry level lens and gets the job done for beginning photographers. Not knowing what a great lens is and then giving this product 5 stars is ignoring what a great lens is. For the money, it is a great lens. As a lens in general (ignoring price) it is what it is. A cheap lens. It isn't very sharp. You are much better served with an inexpensive fast prime lens to get your photo juices flowing. A low Aperture f/1.4-1.8 prime lens will give you much better results. You just need to learn to move your feet.

The lens is relatively cheap, takes amazingly sharp photos and blurs the background well. The lens is great for nature as well as portrait photography. I mainly use it for portrait photography.

Just getting into digital photography after a 20 year hiatus from film. I love this lens. It lets me shoot my grandson from a distance so he is unaware of grandpa's photo taking. Sharp pictures, lightweight, great for the person just starting up and learning or relearning photography.

Quality and Value for the Price
By Vedauwoo
This review is about model 2166 with the VR feature, not the older version 2156. I bought this lens as part of a kit when I bought my D5100. That turned out to be the right decision and I am very happy with the lens. I have a set of autofocus lenses from earlier experiences with Nikon cameras. They certainly work well with the D5100. But the new lineup of lens – such as this one – are so improved that this lens outperforms the others. The EG and VR features are sterling features. Comparing t...

AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED A compact, lightweight and affordable 3.6x high-power telephoto zoom DX ideal for use with Nikon digital SLRs
This ultracompact, lightweight telephoto zoom lens has a 3.6x 55-200mm focal range and offers a remarkable cost-to-performance ratio. Its optics are optimized for use with Nikon digital SLRs, and it is ideally suited to the new Nikon D50.
The compact zoom lens offers powerful zoom performance of 55-200mm (providing a picture angle equivalent to an 82.5-300mm lens in 35mm format) and is suitable for everything from candid portraits to sports, nature and wildlife photography. The newly developed compact SWM (Silent Wave Motor) has given rise to an ultracompact, lightweight design with excellent handling characteristics. Including the new compact SWM, the AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED measures a compact 68 x 79mm (2.7 x 3.1 in.) and weighs approximately 255g (9 oz.).
For optics, two ED glass elements achieve high resolution and contrast while minimizing chromatic aberration and other forms of distortion. The new compact SWM built into the lens offers the smooth and quiet autofocus performance that users have come to expect from our existing SWM.
By using this lens and the new AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED lens, photographers have a focal length range from wide-angle 18mm to telephoto 200mm (providing a picture angle equivalent to a 27-300mm lens in 35mm format), covering an extremely wide variety of subjects and shooting situations. The range of these ultracompact, lightweight lenses, combined with its high-quality performance, will expand the photographic horizons of Nikon Digital SLR owners. The AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED lens will be simultaneously released with the AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED lens.
Note: This lens is not compatible with 35mm [135] or IX240 format film cameras.
