This is a terrific lens for travel. It is very light weight, being made of plastic, with a plastic mount. It has advanced optics and takes excellent photos in the 55mm to 135mm range and very good photos in the 135mm to 200mm range. We old folks convert DX lenses in our minds to their 35mm film versions: this lens has the same reach as a 35mm film camera's 85mm to 300mm zoom lens. At the short end, and using f/4 to blur backgrounds, this is a fine portrait lens. Fully zoomed out, it is useful for sports and for travel photos. The VR II vibration reduction makes it possible to get sharp photos at low shutter speeds. At the full 200mm extension, I get sharp photos at just 1/50th of a second shutter speeds. At the wide end the best results are at f/5.6 and f/8. Fully extended, the best results are at f/8 and f/11. When taking sports photos, it is important to remember that the VR II vibration reduction "freezes" the minor movements of your hands. It does not "freeze" the movement of the runner stealing second base. To freeze sports action requires high shutter speeds of 1/500th of a second or 1/1000 of a second. Folks who say their photos are not sharp need to take a moment to lock in focus and use a fast shutter speed to freeze the movement of their subject. It is very light because of its plastic build and plastic mount. It is NOT a heavy duty lens designed for someone taking photos in all sorts of weather, day after day as many pros do. Yet, I suspect some professional photographers DO carry this lens instead of a pro zoom that weighs three times more and costs ten times as much. It is so light you can forget it is in your bag. And, the photo quality is superb.

Very good for an inexpensive lens. I was shocked at how good it is. I took it to Bend, OR on a trip - it was the only lens I had with me and used it to shoot some birds.

You get what you pay for. Light lens, but not the sharpest lens either.

I recently purchased this lens as a bday gift to myself :-) and was even thinking about returning it for something more along the lines of a 18-300mm lens since I already have a 18-55mm & a 50mm lens. However, when I went out to use it for the first time I was amazed at the clarity of my photos from this lens. I think that this will make a good walk around lens - especially if you're just getting started in photography, like myself - unless you're looking for a walk around lens that will give you more in the way of wide angle to telephoto shots. I'm looking forward to seriously road testing this lens.

This DX zoom lens is lightweight and a nice companion to the Nikon 18-55mm DX zoom lens. The range of zoom is nice in such a lightweight package. With an aperture of 4-5.6, photos in low light can be challenging, but it is clear that this is not a 2.8 lens.

This is a great lens for the money and the bundle makes it a great choice from Adorama. My camera is an FX, D750, but my wife's DX camera takes great pictures as well and this lens is an awesome contributor to her portfolio.

Nikon 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED VR II AF-S DX Nikkor lens bundle has just the right components: an awesome lens, useful filters, and a good, basic software pkg. I chose the pkg specifically for the lens. I have used the same lens without the VR, and it was fine, but the VR II makes a huge, professional-looking difference. Good match for the Nikon D3200.

I tries it on my D610 and the VR seems to work very good. Don't expect a lot from its image quality but it should be OK for your purpose.

This zoom lens is as good as my 70-200 f 2.8 Nikon, except for the smaller aperture of 4.5. Otherwise it only weighs and costs a fraction of the other.

I have previously used just my kit lens and a 35mm. This one helps me have a better range. I have used it a handful of times and I am really pleased with the clarity! You hear so much about the quality of zoom lenses, but I think this is definitely a good lens for a stellar price. The filters look great, but I haven't used them yet.

Amazingly sharp and compact. I own 9 other Nikon lenses, some of which are quite expensive, and this one still has that Nikon pop even though it was inexpensive. The reviews knocking this for having a plastic mount are nonsense. If you are banging your camera around hard enough to damage this lens you should not be using gear of nikons caliber.

Really, I just got back into photography after a long default to Canon Powershot point & shoot which were good cameras. My Nikon DSLR 3400 is the first foray into higher level shooting. I have an FE2 film SLR with many telephoto & wide angle lenses. So that's my touchstone. Regarding this lens, It's light and useful as a long lens choice. It's easy to use and easy to switch out with the standard 18-55 lens that came with my camera. I sort of wish I went to the 300 mm choice. It's kind of like having an old 4speed manual sport car and wishing for overdrive for an extra kick. Also wish it was a motorized zoom. But those are small issues. I like the sharpness, it's easy to focus, it's lightweight and the results are satisfactory to me.

I love it but I wish it could be faster on the D3200. I recommend it to junior photographers such as me. If you are a new beginner you have to buy this lens and the reasons are its cheap, its got VR, Its got a zoom rande of 55-200 which is pretty good for sports and wildlife.

Nikon's 55-200mm new ED lens meets 99% of our travel photography 'zoom' needs. It is light weight, so very easy to carry around all day while hiking. Images are very sharp and clear. 'Bokeh' is very good, too. We like that it 'folds up' really small (and locks) when not in use. Fits nicely in a pocket. Only thing we don't really like is the plastic push-on rear lens cap that came with the lens. No way a deal breaker, so get the Nikon LF-4 replacement rear cap here at Adorama (~$) if that bothers you. The VR (image stabilization) works great. We can shoot hand-held at full zoom easily at 1/60th sec. and, if held properly, at the slower speed of 1/30th without blurred images. Again, saving weight while hiking as tripod is usually not needed. All in all, a great lens that gets the job done.

Five stars because for its price, it can't be beat. This lens is sharp and light. Seems to be all plastic construction, including mount. I have several of Nikons plastic lenses and haven't had any problems but I'm not rough on my equipment and don't leave them in hot places. VR is good, giving useful low light capabilities. Wish it had larger max aperture for shallower depth of field. I'm going to use this lens a lot because of its compactness and light weight.

This is the best Nikon lens I've ever used. Never had a VR lens before and it's incredibly useful. This is my new go-to lens for portraiture.

This lens really surprised me, it might the sharpest Nikon lens for the money there is. Given the price, I didn't have high expectations but it's amazingly sharp. Nice and compact too. It's a great deal for the price ($146), could be the best deal in lens Nikon sells.

Love this lens, I bought this lens on a monday and got it on Wednesday!! Didn't even pay for shipping, it's the perfect tele lens for my hobby and the price is unbeatable... In my personal opinion, best lens to buy if you are on a tight budget. I love buying my equipment from Adorama, trust worthy, and fast! Without a doubt, I would reccomend buying this lens and anything else that you desire from Adorama!

Sharp lens in a small package
By Phil
Took this lens with me to the ball park today, fully extended and handheld took sharp crisp pictures with great contrast and color. Works really well with mr D7100. Recommend? Absolutely! Two things that are impressive, lightweight and sharp on the long end. I live in San Francisco mainly shoot with a wide angle or my 35mm, never really have use for a telephoto normally. Today found me in a luxury box far from the field at the Giants game so I thought I'd try out my telephoto all I can say is...

No better lens for the money.

AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED VR II
A compact telephoto zoom that's great for action, people and travel.
Product photo of the AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED VR II lens Optimized for Nikon's compact DX-format DSLRs, the AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED VR II features a retracting design that's small and lightweight ideal for travel and everyday use. Its versatile zoom range goes from 55mm, which is great for portraits and group shots, up to 200mm telephoto for catching close-ups on the sports field, school events and more. Forget about blurry photos and shaky videos; Vibration Reduction (VR) helps keep your photos sharp and your videos steady. On its own, the AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED VR II is a great multipurpose lens. As a companion to the 18-55mm kit lens that comes with many DX-format DSLRs, it offers continuous coverage across the entire focal length range from 18mm to 200mm.
Small, lightweight telephoto zoom lens
Thanks to a new retractable lens barrel design, the AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED VR II is remarkably small and lightweight, making it a well-balanced match to Nikon DX-format DSLRs. Zoomed out, it's just 83mm long, approximately 20% shorter than previous models. Zoomed in, it provides 200mm of telephoto reach to get you closer to all the shots that matter.
Vibrant, clear photos and videos
The AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED VR II is an advanced lens that pushes Nikon's new high-resolution DSLRs to peak performance. Super Integrated Coating (SIC) delivers superior color quality while reducing ghosting and lens flare. Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass nearly eliminates optical distortion, while a rounded seven-blade diaphragm makes out of focus elements look more natural.
Nikon Vibration Reduction (VR) technology
Forget about blurry photos and shaky videos with the AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED VR II. Nikon Vibration Reduction (VR) image stabilization provides 4.0 stops of blur free handheld shooting, assuring dramatically sharper still images, steadier HD videos and enhanced low-light performance.
ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) Glass
An optical glass developed by Nikon that is used with normal optical glass in telephoto lenses to obtain optimum correction of chromatic aberrations.
IF Lens
A NIKKOR lens in which only the internal lens group shifts during focusing. Thus, IF NIKKORS do not change in size during AF operation, allowing for compact, lightweight lenses capable of closer focusing distances. These lenses will be designated with the abbreviation IF on the lens barrel.
Super Integrated Coating
Nikon Super Integrated Coating is Nikon's term for its multilayer coating of the optical elements in NIKKOR lenses.
Silent Wave Motor
AF-S NIKKOR lenses feature Nikon's Silent Wave Motor (SWM), which represents a significant advance in AF lens technology. SWM uses ultrasonic vibrations rather than a gear system to focus the lens, providing incredibly smooth, silent and precise autofocus operation.
Vibration Reduction
A Nikon in-lens technology that improves image stability by automatically compensating for camera shake. Lenses that offer VR will feature the abbreviation VR on the lens barrel.
