SIDNEY S : whats the Grey Market?JOSEPH K : Grey Market means its not made in the main selling market. The lens is manufactured in a secondary market. For this reason the price might be lower than the other. The quality of construction and material would be at par but keep in mind that it is not guaranteed . I used gray market lens and dint find a problem.DAVID W : bing it!JAMES H : "Gray market" goods are legally imported in every respect. The only thing that differentiates them from officially imported goods brought in directly by Nikon, Canon or whoever is that they were imported by someone else. That's it. But this difference does have significant implications that are the point of this article. If you've been lens shopping and have compared prices between official Nikon or Canon lenses and gray market ones, the most obvious difference is that the officially imported ones are more expensive. This stands to reason since no one in their right mind would set up their own import channels if they needed to charge more than the officially imported ones in order to stay in business. Non-official importers save money by having lower overhead. Many of their costs are probably comparable, but they don't have to pay for advertising since they can ride on the coattails of the advertising produced by the official importers. These are the same exact lens, both probably manufactured on the same assembly line in Japan, China, or wherever. They only difference is the import channel involved. Gray market importers also save money by generally not including a warranty. This is something you need to be comfortable with seeing as Nikon and Canon generally won't service gray market goods either. Since they didn't import them they would lose money if they had to pay for any necessary repairs. Most dealers carrying gray market lenses often offer after market warranties at modest prices to compensate.MADEEHA S : According to wikipedia: 'Grey-market goods refer to "legal goods" which are sold outside normal distribution channels by companies which may have no relationship with the producer of the goods. Frequently this form of parallel import occurs when the price of an item is significantly higher in one country than another. This situation commonly occurs with electronic equipment such as cameras. Entrepreneurs buy the product where it is available cheaply, often at retail but sometimes at wholesale, and import it legally to the target market. They then sell it at a price high enough to provide a profit but under the normal market price.'CHAD D : I believe I was able to research on the Adorama site and find the Grey market answer. Find Grey market answers at http://www.adorama.com/catalog.tpl?op=FAQ Enjoy
Shopper : can you use with nikon d3000?JOSELITO L : Yes.JOSEPH K : D3000 does not have an Internal motor , So when ever you buy a lens make sure it has AF-S and not AF in order to enable Auto focus. 55-300 is AF-S lens so it would work!!JEFFREY D : Yes. Check your camera manual it should say that you can use lenses with a "G" designation.Overall I've gotten good results with this lens.
Kevin H : is this a used lens?MARK H : Mine came new in box with factory wrapping. Works great. Have taken it out to several national parks with weather from very dry, snow fall (Yosemite), and wet (Niagara Falls) with no problems and great results.JEFFREY D : Nope it is imported by Adorama, not Nikon and thus is not eligible for Nikon rebates. It is an excellent lens though. And well worth the price.SCOTT R : I was under the same impression, but I found it to be new and works perfectly, the only draw back is in low light conditions but unless you want to spend 5 times more for the very few times you would need it you will find this to be a main lens I have this and my 18-55 and really cover any situation, good luck, scottDAVID W : Not used - grey market=no manufacturer warranty. See FAQ on grey market products.JAMES H : No, not used... brand new and mine works fantastically. Shot for 2 weeks in Mexico and love my shots!WARREN G : Came new The optical performance of this 55-300mm lens is excellent. Not for fast moving sports a bit slow forusing other the that Just one fine lens your love No disapointment here WarrenROGER N : No it is not a used lens, I bought and loved it right out of the box. You must skip the 200mm lens, as this is better quality and base is metal, as well as having better range. Works perfect and comes in factory box. I use it mostly for sports, great for great shots of baseball games that are small parks, like pro minors or even your own sons ballpark.SANCHITH K : No, it's not. It only means that it's imported and that Nikon USA's warranty won't apply.

Beyond satisfied!!

I've had my camera for probably 12 years now and always wanted to upgrade the lens but just couldn't afford it. My teenage son is getting into photography and wanted a larger lens as well. He worked and saved up his money and bought this pre-owned lens. We both took a chance at it not knowing if it was going to be damaged or scratched. We just received it the other day and it is amazing. There is not a blemish on this lens, it is brand new for all that we know. If you are hesitant to buy a pre-owned item or accessory from this company, don't be!!

Solid tele lens

Overall this is a solid lens. This was my first tele and it overall is fantastic. It is, however, a bit heavy and the AF tends to hunt frequently and is a bit slow. It is fairly short which is convenient and the focal length range is great compared to the 70-300 options. Overall a great first tele lens!

Good just not for winter photography

Good general purpose lens especially for the price. Be forewarned though the zoom and focus functions WILL NOT work below 32 degrees! I don't know why maybe its the lubricants they use or something, but if the lens is exposed to sub freezing temperatures for very long at all the zoom and focus rings will bind and jam. Above freezing it works fine and I've never had a problem.

Jack-of-all Lens

Using this lens with my D7200, I am able to capture sharp pictures in almost any lighting conditions. If you like portraits with bokeh, this lens is superb. If you like to capture fast moving subjects (e.g. sports activities or fast moving targets like hummingbirds), this lens is also outstanding. The images shown were taken during a family vacation. I really love this lens. It's truly a jack-of-all trade.

Good Value

I bought this lens for my D7200. It is compact and light, but fairly solidly built with a metal lens mount. The optics seem to be excellent based on about 100 shots that I have taken, although I haven't really done a detailed evaluation of sharpness. As others have said, the autofocus is fairly slow, and to manually override autofocus you have to flip the switch on the side of the lens. These are not deal killers for landscapes and slow moving subjects, but for fast moving wildlife and sports there are better telephotos. But this is a pretty solid choice for a modestly priced walk-around DX tele.

The VRII really makes a difference.

The Nikon 55-300 DX zoom lens has very impressive VR and produces sharp hand-held images at all focal lengths, even when the aperture is wide open.

The Nikon 55-300 is often sharp at maximum aperture and is fun to use.

The Nikon 55-300 is very light and compact. The VR feature is a big help in allowing me to use slower shutter speeds in reduced light. The auto focus is a bit slow on cloudy days forcing me to use the slightly complicated manual focus at times.

My Nikon 55-300mm AF-S Nikkor VR Vibration Lens

My only complaint is that the focus is slow and to get a clear picture, I sometimes have to switch from Autofocus to Manaul to maintain a sharp picture. I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS LENSE.

OK, focus could be better

Using this lens with an D3300 for wildlife photography and having difficulty getting sharp bird photos, especially at 300mm. I understand from reviews that the Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E VR AF-P lens focuses quicker for this type of work. Would this lens focus faster on a body with more auto focus points such as D7500?

A great lens for DSLR beginners

Hello there, I am a young nature photographer who has used this lens for an entire year. It has been quite a good lens, I love how sharp the focus can get and it has captured some tricky birds in flight. The vibration reduction really, really helps get the clarity of the photographs, and it focuses quite well. There is one downside only: The focus is just a little bit slow. I have missed some really good shots just because of a split second focus lag, and it is disappointing, but throughout this year, I am still satisfied with this lens. I highly recommend it to DSLR beginners who are wildlife photographers and like to shoot in sports mode, and who are on a budget, because this lens is really good for a low price. Even though this zoom lens can reach 300mm, I have stumbled through moments where my subject (say, a bird) is too far and I must slowly get closer in order to get a good shot before it flies away. And that is a good thing, because it challenges me and I learn how to get closer to birds without scaring them. This lens with a Nikon D3300 is a good combination.

Light and Good

At 399.99 this is considered a "cheap" I use this for bird photography and while a longer lens (hello 200-500mm) would be more productive. I get decent BIF and perch shots. Well worth the price of admission

Scored on a great Zoom.

Adorama had this lens used for very little money. Was a V in condition, but I have to tell you that to me that was very conservative. Maybe better that way when buying used. Not overlapping focal points with the exception of my 35mm F1.8 Nikkor prime I got used here too. The 55 to 300mm works a treat. The VR vibration reduction does as advertised helping me keep me steady and get crisp sharp images. Color, and detail is what I expect from this ED coated glass lens, and it does deliver. Focus is a bit slow but using my back focus control, I can throttle focus very effectively. I had the included Lens caps front and back. Thank you, and the Lens Hood as well. Was not expecting that. In many ways this great lens with its metal mount unlike my 18-55mm VR kit is plastic. I will leave this lens on for those impromptu distant aerial shots I want to get. Lots of Aircraft, and I don't want to miss them. Great value, and great buying used here. Very pleased running on my D5500 bought here also as well. So far the products and Adorama has served me well. Most impressed.

Not a bad lens

The lens is a little soft, but not terrible. I'd save my money and get the much better 70-300.

Get this one.

Forget the 55-200 (also a very good lens) and get this one that will go to 450mm on DX. Very good results, well worth the money.

Does Everythig I Expected

I use it mostly to shoot theater and it provides the versatility to get scenes and closeups without having to change lenses. The VR helps in the low-light conditions.

I use it for wildlife photography, and I am very pleased with it. Is the second one that I have bought, the previous one I gave it to my son.

Excellent zoom

I sold my kit 55-200mm Nikkor and upgraded to this beauty. It was a rufurb, but you'd never know it from the build and image quality. Sharp to the corners at all focal lengths, relatively light, and comes with the excellent HB-57 hood. About the only thing that could make this lens perfect would be constant aperture, but that's not a huge issue with me; I can deal with f/5.6 at 300mm. At that length, I'm usually shooting at f/8 or higher, and can compensate nicely for light loss when handheld with higher ISOs on my D7000 without noise problems. All in all, a great piece of glass. Highly recommended!

I love it!

I love this lens! I'm still a newbie with dslr cameras, but this lens is great! I got a nice discount buying it with my Nikon D5200. I love using it to do photo shoots with my chickens and my parrot. And it is a great lens to have for video, I use it for some short interview type settings and it can produce a nice shallow depth of field to make my subject pop out from the background. I don't have anything bad to say about this lens.

Nice lens

Works fine & has pretty good image quality for the price. Zoom operates smoothly & holds it's setting when camera is held in different positions. On the downside, the front element rotates a little less than a quarter-turn thru the focusing range. Since I don't use polarizers or ND filters much it isn't that big a deal for me.

Nice Lens

Part of a bundle for the Nikon D7100. This lens has good range. Although I do find myself having a need for more telephoto for those birds way up in the trees and a wider lens for inside the bars to shoot video of a band. At 55mm the bar scene only allows head shots. And for the birds the 300mm gets almost there, but when the image is cropped to be just right, a little of the sharpness is lost. Over all this lens is great for the averge shots. The VR works terrific.

This lens is ok in good light

The lens is ok, but I had a hard time focusing it and the images were very soft. I returned the lens to and went with 70-300mm.

My favorite lens

I love the vibration reduction feature, and will use the lens as a simple telescope even if I don't want a photo. It fun for every purpose it serves. I am anxious to learn all the uses for it as a better educated photographer, but I have taken excellent photos with it.
