Half the weight of the 2.8's; satisfying sharpness.

About half the weight of the 2.8's. Very sharp on my Z7 (particularly around f/5.6-6.3). Able to stuff in backpack for long walks which I never did with my 80-200 2.8; it always ends up in the trunk. Only competition for this lens on Nikon Z's (for long walks) would be the Z 24-200, which I have not bought yet (unless you're half my age and stronger). I used this lens often (not as much as my Z 24-70 2.8) on my recent trip to three national parks in USA.

Top notch lens

Excellent optic with very fast, spot-on focus and excellent VR. Lighter than my f/2.8 but not a ton shorter.

Very sharp and well worth the price

This is a super-sharp lens that is well worth it's price. I upgraded from a Canon L f/4, which I felt was pretty amazing, but this completely beat it. It's SO SHARP even at f/4. It's well worth the price.

Excellent product at a cost effective price.

This is probably the most useful zoom lens type there is - and Nikon has been making 80-200 and 70-200 zooms lenses for a long time. They're all excellent lenses - why this on? Its optically equivalent or slightly superior to the 80-200 f/2.8 but less expensive, smaller and lighter. Great shot wide open.

Sharp and true

I have a D7500, and I love taking pictures with this lens. It's short on reach compared to the consumer 70-300's, but I can more often than not crop to 200% and get great results. And it's hard to confuse this lens - once it focuses, it stays put. Not my experience with the FX 70-300 mm AF-P.

Sharp and not too heavy

Great lens. It's sharp, zooms internally (no air pumps around when zooming), and doesn't feel too heavy. VR is definitely necessary when shooting at 200mm indoors.

The lens is sharp and the VR works great

I bought this lens to use at a wedding where I had shoot from the back of the room. The lens is sharp and the VR works great. I have since used it in other applications and really like it. I got this instead of the 2.8 version because of weight and cost and have not been disappointed.

Awesome Lens

Used this lens for shooting the solar eclipse and for a trip to Yellowstone. Very light and handy, and the VR was amazingly effective shooting the wildlife in the park.

Excellent lens-Highly Recommended

I needed a lighter version of this lens so I gave up one stop of aperture for a more compact package. Optically great, VR is outstanding, there's nothing not to like about this lens.

No regrets - a solid performing lens.

I have shot with this lens for 2+ years now on my D810. I have absolutely no regrets about choosing the 70-200 F/4 over ther F/2.8 version. First off I saved a thousand dollars. Secondly, I can carry this thing on my neck all day with ease and comfort. The image quality is excellent and the reliable VR is there to help out when the light grows dim. I've even pushed this thing to it's limits with a TC20E-III attached and successfully captured birds in flight - a real stretch with a D810 and effective aperture of F/8! I'll let the results speak for themselves.

This is my favorite go to lens. It is sharp, fast and not as heavy as it could be. I use this lens for everything, from portraits to landscapes.

Love My New Nikon 70-200 F/4

Love the light weight and quality build. This will probably become my walk around camera when outdoors. As per usual, Adorama did what they said they would. It came on time and I'm a happy camper.

Great Weight / Performance Balance

I purchased this lens to replace a 70-200 f/2.8 that had (sadly) been stolen. While I really liked the f/2.8 (it was 10 yrs old), the weight and size was a factor on long hikes, days out and around, etc. So after much consideration, I decided to go with the f/4 as a replacement and have really liked it. Very nice performance, very good feel, super sharp. Basically, if you REALLY need f/2.8, this isn't the one--but otherwise, I think this lens is pretty hard to beat.

Very Much Amazed By The High Quality

For several years, I'd been looking at the Nikkor 80-200 f2.8 AF lens for my needs in a short/medium telephoto. I owned a Tokina 80-200 f2.8, and had been very pleased with its performance on my F5 and D200 cameras. I replaced the D200 with a D500 and D750, and really wanted a Nikkor lens to use. A local shop had a perfect condition used 70-200mm f4, and I traded the Tokina for it and cash on the spot. While in the shop, I compared like images on a D750 with both lenses. I hadn't realized just how far superior the Nikkor was; no real comparison. I've never looked back. It has worked perfectly as a "go to" lens for nature, architecture, and landscape when the occasion rises. I'm amazed at the light weight and how sharp the lens is. The auto focus is very quick, and the VR is a great aid for the hand held shots, especially at the 200mm end, and lower shutter speeds. I really haven't missed the extra stop, since the ISO resolution on the D500 and D750 models is so good. Not having to haul an extra one pound plus in the bag or vest makes a huge difference in a long day! Nikon has a real winner, and I'm glad I now own one.

Excellent Smaller Version of the f/2.8 Lens

The Nikon 70-200mm f/4 lens is extremely resolute yet very light weight. With the advent of newer digital sensors that are so sensitive to light, one need not require a much larger f/2.8 lens for most indoor photography. Attached is a photo taken indoors with this f/4 lens in ambient light. The shutter speed is 1/200, the aperture is f/4, the ISO is 1250, the focal length is 190mm, white balance is auto, and metering is center-weighted. The sharpness of this lens is astounding. The size and weight of this lens makes for very easy traveling.

Only need one word to describe this lens "Excellent"

Recently got back into photography, have 20+ yrs experience with Nikon SLR's. Currently have a D800, D610, 16/2.8D Fisheye, 20/1.8G, 35/1.8G, 50/1.4D and 70-200/4G. One of the benefits of modern cameras is that "film" is cheap. I've done thorough sharpness and resolution tests on my lenses with the D800. The 16/2.8 is very good wide open, tack sharp at f4. The 20 & 35 are very good at f2, tack sharp at f2.8. The 50/1.4D is disappointing, fuzzy wide open, good at f2.8, tack sharp at f4. Which brings me to the 70-200/f4. It is tack sharp wide open, there's maybe a little extra sharpness in the corners at f5.6, but very sharp at any aperture and any focal length (corners included). Well maybe not f32 as diffraction happens. As well you don't get focal creep or whatever it's called at 200mm and closest focus. Unlike the 2.8 lens which is somewhere around 135mm at minimum focus. The VR works amazingly well. I've gotten crisp shots at 200mm at 1/15 sec. Proper bracing and support is required, but the VR just helps so much. The weight and location of the zoom ring are just about perfect. Awesome lens. As one reviewer said "the only reason to stop down is for extra depth of field", I couldn't agree more. My two cents worth.

Perfection

You better REALLY need f2.8 if you're going to bypass this gem and deal with the much larger, heavier and way more cumbersome f2.8 variant of this lens. I've owned both and there is NO comparison which I'm happier with. A perfect match with the 200-500 f5.6

This Lens Delivers

By David-eye

The new Nikon 70-200 f/4 lens simply does everything it is supposed to do. It is light, compact, and produces eye popping images with edge-to-edge sharpness on my D600. Great product!

Better than 2.8vrii @ 150mm @ f4 same as @ 200mm and it only gets better.

By PabloSRT8

Go above f4 and this lens can challenge the 70-200 2.8 vrii very easily. VR 3rd Gen feels so much better than previews generations. And AF speed might not be as fast as the 2.8 but its about 90% there. Half the weight, just as sharp, one thousand dollars less, better VR. You do the math. Tryed it on my D800.

Nikon's compact high-performance f/4 fixed aperture zoom lenses, the AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/4G ED VR. Inspired by today's versatile HD-SLR shooters, it strikes an ideal balance between exceptional optics, advanced lens technologies including our game-changing third generation of Vibration Reduction with up to 5 stops of image stabilization and a remarkably compact, lightweight design. Whether you shoot with an FX- or DX-format camera, handheld or tripod-mounted, the AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/4G ED VR delivers the serious telephoto zoom performance you've been seeking.

Take it everywhere Lightweight, portable and highly versatile
At just 30.0 oz and a mere 7.0-in. long, the AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/4G ED VR is well balanced and comfortable, even on long outings. Its f/4 fixed maximum aperture excels in low light and lets you maintain a consistent exposure while zooming, especially useful when shooting HD videos. The 70-200mm focal length range (105-300mm on DX-format cameras) has been the choice of pros for years, but for greater reach, add any of Nikon's teleconverters and achieve 1.4x, 1.7x or 2x magnification. The AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/4G ED VR even focuses as close as 3.28-ft with a maximum magnification of 0.274x, so you can capture the smallest of subjects while maintaining a comfortable working distance.

Dazzling photos and HD videos - Advanced features for exceptional results
Optimized for capturing high-quality stills and HD videos on both FX- and DX-format cameras, the AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/4G ED VR incorporates Nikon advancements in lens technology and optical design. It's our first third generation Vibration Reduction lens, which enables hand-held shooting at shutter speeds up to an unheard of 5 stops slower than would otherwise be possible. Nano Crystal Coat (N) reduces ghosting and lens flare; three Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass elements provide maximum sharpness and minimum chromatic aberration, even at f/4; and the Silent Wave Motor (SWM) provides ultra-fast, ultra-quiet autofocusing with seamless manual focus override.

Cover every possibility - Build an exceptional f/4 zoom system
The AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/4G ED VR brings the telephoto zoom range to Nikon's high-performance f/4 fixed aperture zoom lenses. Pair it with either the ultra-wide-angle to standard AF-S NIKKOR 16-35mm f/4F ED VR or the wide-angle to telephoto AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR, and you'll be able to cover an extremely broad focal length range with f/4 speed, superior image quality and a compact, lightweight lens system.
