Good for sports and events but does not have the clarity that my Z lens have. It is a heavy beast!

It may be that it is my unit, but I am not too crazy about the sharpness of my pictures with this lens. i have a D750 and a D500 and I have this issue with both cameras. It is soft all across the zoom range. Very heavy. You need to use it with a tripod to get the best results.

As expected this lens is fantastic. Of course I'd love to try the latest version but not at the significant cost to upgrade. This VRII version suits me well. replaced the zoom rubber once. After about 15 sports gigs that required frequent zooming, it syretched out a bit. Maintainance costs.

Shoot mostly indoor volleyball of my kids teams. This lens makes life much easier for me. I've used it on my old Nikon D750 and now on the Nikon D500. The crop sensor took a little getting used to, however, still a fantastic lens.

Lens is super sharp and resolves very well. Photos of hummingbirds from 10 feet show every feather in sharp detail. Big and heavy lens but unsurpassed image quality.

This is an excellent lens. I also have the Nikon 70-200 f4. It's a little smaller and lighter and works fine in bright light, but for night or indoor sports, or anything in low light, the 2.8 can't be beat.

I owned the previous VR I lens. Unfortunately it was destroyed in a freak accident... so I immediately ordered the current version. This lens has fantastic sharpness, it focuses quickly and is easily hand held at some pretty slow shutter speeds. Even though I have several excellent Nikon lenses, the 70-200mm continues to be hands down, the best of all of them. It is just a great lens.

just play with it in one day. I recommend everyone new to this also want to buy, make sure try the weight first. maybe you would need the f4 one which should be much lighter. I even worry it break my D750 body interface sometime if I just hold the camera body without left hand holding the lens. Do I need to ?

This is an expensive lens, but it delivers great results. Sometimes Nikon lens are the best overall value, sometimes it is the third party lens makers with the best overall value. In this focal range, I think the Nikon is the best value and I'm very happy with my purchase, despite the steep price to entry.

Is this the best lens ever--yes. As a pro photographer I need really good lenses. This 70-200 2.8 is perfect. The sharpest focus at 2.8 low light hand held at 60 of a second shutter. VR kicking in. I am very happy. Good deal from Adorama with the drop insurance and filters.

Although this lens is much sharper than the old 70-200mm f/2.8 VR, it has one very serious flaw -- focus breathing. Depending on your distance away from your subject, your angle of view is at 135mm when you zoomed in at 200mm (this is a problem if you are less than 20 ft away...) Focus breathing is common among zoom lenses, but this is unacceptable. A shot at 135mm is not the same as 200mm. You don't have to take me words for it, just do some research online...this is a well-known problem with this lens.

I've been using an older Sigma 70-200, which is a good lens but this new Nikon 70-200 VR ll is hands down a much superior lens. It focuses and tracks much faster and with the VR ll I'm hand holding it at shutter speeds (1/30 sec at 200mm) to slow to dream about with the old lens.

Excellent Lens. Nikon has done it again
By Eddie
I just received this lens a couple of days ago so I haven't been able to test it extensively, but so far the results far exceeds the previous version of this lens. I still feel that the Image Quality of the original VR lens is outstanding and it should be considered in your decision making. The VR II is a definite improvement. I have been able to shoot at 1/20 shutter speed without any visible motion blur. I am planning on shooting more weddings and events. The VR II on the new lens will...

Great Lens
By Dean G.
After using this lens now for almost 2 months, I am very pleased with the purchase. I was contemplating purchasing the VRI when this lens was announced, and I am glad I waited. This lens has exceeded my expectations. Sharpness is exceptional, compared to the previous model. Auto-focus is very fast. Low light capability is excellent. The quality and sharpness of the images is great, even at f 2.8. Zoom and focus rings are smooth and work flawlessly. The vibration reduction is one stop...

New fast telephoto zoom lens AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II for use with digital- and film-SLR cameras. A number of unique Nikon technologies have been adopted for this lens, including the use of seven ED glass elements, Nano Crystal Coat, a vibration reduction (VR II) system that provides camera shake compensation equivalent to increases in shutter speed by four steps, and a Silent Wave Motor (SWM).
This fast telephoto zoom lens provides the excellent performance and superior image quality demanded by professional and advanced amateur photographers.
With release of this lens, Nikon has structured an incomparable NIKKOR zoom lens system that also includes the current AF-S NIKKOR 14-24mm f/2.8G ED and AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8G ED for complete coverage of focal lengths from 14mm to 200mm with support for a maximum aperture of f/2.8 throughout the entire range.
The AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II offers excellent performance throughout its range of focal lengths, from the natural rendering characteristics of mid-range telephoto positions to the compressed perspective of telephoto positions. The lens makes the most of a wide variety of scenes, from portraits to staged events as well as sports photography under nighttime lighting, press photography, and scenes that require soft rendering of out-of-focus portions.
The use of seven ED glass elements provides the ultimate in rendering characteristics for capture of images exhibiting excellent resolution and high contrast. The additional use of Nano Crystal Coat effectively suppresses ghost and flare for clear images. Adoption of the Silent Wave Motor (SWM) allows for smooth and quiet autofocusing that makes the most of camera autofocus subject tracking systems. The lens also provides superior operation with three focus modes M, A/M, M/A for manual focusing or manually fine-tuning focus acquired with autofocus by simply rotating the lens' focus ring.
The vibration reduction system (VR II) provides camera shake compensation equivalent to increases in shutter speed by four steps*. Two vibration reduction modes are available.
NORMAL mode: The vibration reduction mechanism reduces ordinary camera shake. Panning is also supported.
ACTIVE mode: The vibration reduction mechanism reduces extreme camera shake, such as that which occurs with shooting from a moving vehicle.
