MICHAEL P : would these be good for hunting deer in mountains at 500 yard?WILLIAM J : Unknown. Many factors involved in sighting through vegetation across terrane. We use them for birding and they work great!JAE THOMAS S : These are great for spotting anything (within reason) 500+ yards away.NICK T : I can't say for deer hunting but these are great in 8x. I spot eagles at 500 yards. These are tough and waterproof. At 42mm they are not so pocket-able but they provide a bright clear view for my older eyes. As you go up in power, you introduce shake which offsets any power benefit unless you are resting your arms or using a tripod. You also lose field of view at higher powers which makes it harder to find things. I have 8x and 10x. They are equivalent when handheld in MY hands for seeing details but 8x gets the edge for a slightly wider field of view and steadiness. 8x is better from a boat too.

Great choice for bird watching

After some research I chose the Nikon 8X42 Monarch binoculars for bird watching. These are the first good quality binoculars that I have owned and I am so impressed with how clear I can see at long distances. Very happy with this choice so far.

Binoculars Nikon Monarch 5

These Binoculars were just what I wanted. Took a very, very long time (a month) to actually arrive but here they are and will be used for years to come. Wish I had known that a case was included as I ordered a case and received it over 3 1/2 weeks before binoculars.

Nikon made this birder girl happy

I love these binoculars. I went from super cheap binoculars and nearly quitting on birding to one who can see color and fine details easily. Send that is what a birder needs to tell the difference between a thrush and an oven bird or a crow or a raven. I’m even able to see some blue in an indigo bunting when the sun is behind them. I’m kind of a bird nut, water birds, birds In the woods and backyard birds too. Totally worth the price and I can’t imagine needing anything more for my purposes. So if there are better binoculars out there I imagine they could only be required but only by professionals.

Great Binocular

This is my first purchase of a binocular. I went with Nikon for their lifetime warranty and customer reviews. My eyes aren’t perfect but the vision results with this binocular are phenomenal just like my Nikon lens/glass on my Nikon body.

Good binoculars for a modest price.

Have not used my new binoculars yet but the same kind last month and liked them well enough to some of my own. Service from Adorama was great.

Great customer service

I bought a used Monarch 5 8X42 binocular, and had questions for C.S. The responses were quick, accurate, and helpful. They even registered them for me. The Monarch 5 is a big jump in quality from my other brand. The brightness is far better, and focusing is more precise. This is a great product.

don't loose your receipt and warranty card

Good binoculars, Slightly overrated. Rubber coating disintegrated after 2 years(I live in florida). Eyecups became loose fairly quickly. By 2 years both eyecups need to be replaced and the rubber coating. The good news is that it is covered under warranty.

Bright and Clear

I got these for my wife so she could see what I was looking at while photographing birds. It changed everything! Rather than being rather frustrated at having to wait around while I'm shooting, she now sees and is able to participate in what I'm doing. The Monarch 5 Binoculars are clear, bright, and sharp. They're easy to adjust and focus. The lens caps are attached to the neck strap so she doesn't worry about loosing them. They're not the highest end binoculars, but not the lowest either. She's now very excited to be out with me when I'm doing my photography thing. They're really quite good!

Excellent value in quality binoculars

This item has excellent optical quality - very bright image with good contrast, no detectable chromatic aberration. The binoculars are not too heavy. I like the close focus distance, and the long eye relief (good if you wear glasses. The case that comes with the binoculars is fair, have to see how well it holds up.

excellengt

I have only had cheap binoculars in the past. My son had a Monarch 5 and upgraded to a Monarch 7. He recommended the 5 for me. It was the best choice he could have recommended as I am a beginner bird watcher. Thad day I came across 7 eagles in one tree. Two adults and their 6 offsprings. Their nest must have been nearby. I looked through my new binoculars and my breath was taken away. I could not believe how beautiful, and majestic those eagles looked through my binoculars. The view was so clear and crisp. Thank you for this opportunity! I only wish I had a good camera with me that day.

Excellent for the price

I am an experienced birder. I bought these binoculars for my wife and as a back-up to my aging but still excellent Zeiss Dialyt 7x42 binoculars. As of this writing I have only had the Nikon Monarch 5 binocs for 1 week, but so far I am very impressed. The image quality is excellent - exceptionally sharp as other reviewers have noted. The focus mechanism is smooth and very sensitive. My wife and I both wear eyeglasses, so the long eye relief is a great plus. I have put the close focusing to the test, and it is working to about 8 ft as advertised. The low light performance of the Monarch 5s is not as good as my Zeiss, and their field of view is much narrower (partly because they are 8x vs. 7x, but I noted from some professional reviews that the Monarch 5s have narrower FOV than some other popular 8x binocs). The image quality outweighs this IMO. The Monarchs are relatively light-weight and compact, so I have had no problem hiking and snowshoeing with them. Btw they work fine in cold weather. Overall I am very pleased with the Nikon Monarch 5 8x42 binocs, which at ~($) deliver image quality that I would expect in a much more expensive binocular. I would recommend them to anyone who wants a superior set of mid-price-range binoculars.

Beautiful!

I've been using a small pair of Nikon for years (and a huge set of Celestron when I'm close to home)-- these are every bit as bright as the much larger & heavier Celestrons. Excellent size & weight. I wouldn't backpack with them but very easy to carry and I am small-ish. I was also concerned that pupil distance would be small enough and it's fine too. If you are using a pair of 10 year-old binoculars -- buy these and see how beautiful the world is!

Inexpensive doesn't mean inferior.

I'm a serious birder and have used many different binocs over my 60 years of wildlife viewing. My Monarch 5 8x42's are equal to most if not all the brands I've tried. Their attractive pricing and good quality have made them popular with many of the birders I know.

Bring nature in close

I bought the Nikon Monarch 5 Binocular because I do a lot of nature photography and needed to take a clear close look at long landscapes, birds, wildlife or potential action like calving glaciers or breaching whales. I have used other brands for years and have been satisfied but felt I needed something lighter and more weatherproof. These fit the bill perfectly. Scenes are clear and bright and the wide neck strap makes them easy to wear while hiking. The light weight and compact design also make them easy to fit in a camera bag or backpack without sacrificing other equipment.

Great Buy

I work as a wildlife researcher so good binoculars are an essential tool for my job. That being said I still can't justify spending thousands on binoculars. I've been waiting to pick up a pair of Monarch 5's for a while and when Adorama had these on sale with an included binocular harness and Maglite Mini I went for it. So far I am very impressed. Great clairity, good low light usability, all in a lite, compact design. I agrea with other reviewers that the cover for the eyepieces is horrible. It certainly doesn't effect the actual binoculars but the fact that Nikon could include such terrible eyepiece covers warrents the 1 star reduction. Otherwise great binoculars at an affordable price.

I love the binoculars! Images are crystal clear, minimal shake at this distance (YMMV), the manufacturer should lower the price which we felt was high.

Great Binocular

By Mark O.

This is my first purchase of a binocular. I went with Nikon for their lifetime warranty and customer reviews. My eyes aren’t perfect but the vision results with this binocular are phenomenal just like my Nikon lens/glass on my Nikon body.

Lightweight Champion of Dawn & Dusk
Even with an uncontested heritage of all-conditions optical performance, the all-new MONARCH 5 further elevates its game with improved agility and advanced low light brilliance. By shaving nearly an ounce of weight from its rugged frame, the new MONARCH 5 is more athletic than ever, while the addition of Nikon ED glass lenses puts it in a class of its own for battling darkness with sharp, high-contrast views.

Nikon's ED Glass Lenses: The Difference Is Clear
All MONARCH 5 binoculars are now built with Nikon's legendary ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass lenses, which correct chromatic aberrations across the furthest limits of the visible light range and effectively compensate for color fringing. Even when observing objects that would make chromatic aberration the most apparent - such as adjacent whites and blacks - the images will maintain superior contrast and resolution thanks to the ED glass lenses. The improved resolution also provides brighter, more natural looking images, making the MONARCH 5 a serious contender to be your "go-to" binocular for years to come.

Extremely Portable: Now Lighter Than Ever Before
Almost a full ounce lighter than its predecessors, the new MONARCH 5 is even easier to take with you on your next outing. Its small size, combined with a sleek easy-to-grip body design, makes it the ultimate binocular to carry with you.

Enjoy Comfortable Viewing: Nikon's High-Eyepoint Design
Nikon has manufactured the MONARCH 5 binoculars, as well as many other of its optics, with a high-eyepoint design. This provides a clear field of view for everyone, even when the user is wearing eyeglasses, with sufficient space between the user's brow and the binocular's eyecups.

Greater Light Transmission: Fully Multicoated Eco-Glass Lenses
Multilayer coatings, which provide an even higher light transmittance across the entire visible light spectrum, are applied to all of the lens and prism surfaces that transmit light. This minimizes the loss of light due to reflection, thereby ensuring a more natural, clearer view.

Rich, Accurate Colors: Dielectric High-Reflective Multilayer Prism Coating
Applied to all lenses and prism surfaces, this technique provides almost the same brightness as that perceived by the naked eye, and clear high-contrast images that display accurate color reproduction.

Turn-and-Slide Rubber Eyecups
The turn-and-slide rubber eyecups allow users to adjust the eye-relief for a custom fit - providing a full field of view and maximum comfort during extended periods of use.

Durable Rubber-Armored Body
Built to handle any environment, the MONARCH 5 has a rubber-armored coating to withstand extreme use and provide a non-slip grip, even in the wettest conditions.

Smooth Central Focus Knob
With this simple and intuitive design, bringing objects into focus has never been easier.

Waterproof and Fogproof
MONARCH 5 binoculars are Nitrogen filled and O-Ring sealed for complete waterproof and fogproof performance.
