Monarch 7 8x42 binoculars

Very nice optics, tough to hand-hold steadily on a distant target object...purchased in 2017 optics still very solid in 2022 in spite of being handled by 7 grandchildren over that period of time; rubber flaps that protect subject end have failed & no longer connected. Very nice for birding. Great clarity & color & quick focusing.

Nice Binoculars

Review of Monarch 7, 8x42 Primary binocs: Pentax dcf sp 8x32. Zeiss Fl 10x42 My old trusty Pentax were losing their edge so I got the Nikon M7s I really love these at dusk and dawn, and in the deep woods. They are excellent in low light. I like how they fit my hand and how the focus (depth of field) racks with a single finger on the focusing wheel. Better even than my more expensive Zeiss which are a tad bit sharper. The M7s provide a nice sharp, wide view too. They do not handle a lot of light quite as well but are still good. They loose a little contrast and the light sometimes bounces around in the barrel in an unhelpful way. I?m more familiar with flare in camera lenses. Each lens has its own way of handling direct light. I carry binos for a couple hours a day so size is important. These are decent weight for 8x42s. Overall it?s nice glass, excellent in shade and low light. They don?t loose to much on the Zeiss and actually pull focus better.

Wonderful binoculars

Great binoculars. I?m a beginner and they are very easy to use. I go on walks to the park and through the woods and they make a difference on catching close-up glimpses of the birds in the area. I?m glad I bought them from Adorama. The staff were very quick to respond to any email inquiries I had while waiting for my order.

worth the extra investment

These were a step up from my first "bins," Bushnell Legend, 8x42, purchased 13 years ago for around $150. Nothing wrong with those. Served me well for birding, but I was intrigued by the idea of a better pair. Wasn't sure the increased investment in the Nikons would be worth it--but it was. The Nikons provide markedly brighter and sharper viewing. This was evident during a recent visit to a nearby lake to look for some uncommon migrant gulls. The weather was overcast, and it was late in the day, so lighting was not good. And yet, could still pick out key field marks on moving birds. A good investment.

Solid Binos

Have owned Nikon rangefinders but first set of Nikon binoculars I've owned, got a set for myself and my daughter, solid glass and light gathering ability, was very pleased with my purchase. As most hunters I keep my binos against my body on a harness, and of course creating heat, and did notice a little more fogging on outside of glass when temps dropped, but once the temps were equal, they were impressive, was able to pick out quite a bit of detail.

Great binoculars!

I am an avid birder and use my Monarch 7 8 X 42 binoculars everyday . Could not be happier with them. Also, the lifetime guarantee is wonderful .... Except ....do not except fast service. I took my bins into the shop I bought them from for repair. They promptly sent them into Nikon. I was them informed by the camera shop, that Nikon would replace them with a new pair ( wonderful ! ) However, that was six weeks ago. I have been told that they are not " in stock" , how can that be. Really hope they send by new bins soon.

Excellent Value

I have owned Nikon Monarch 7 8x42 binoculars and used them almost daily for the last 4 years and 3 months. Prior to that time I had never owned binoculars or used them very much. I got lucky with my first pair as these binoculars are exceptionally good, and have totally changed the way I interact with the visual world. These binoculars have been used for hunting, birding, boating, general wildlife observation, sporting events, travel... Seriously, I don't go very many places without them. They are comfortable to carry (I don't use a strap or anything, I just carry them in my hand). The view is bright (I have tested in very low light and are actually brighter than my naked eye). They are clear (I can read the names of boats that I can see from my kitchen over 1000 yards away). I chose the Nikon Monarch 7 8x42s for the wide field of view (which at the time was the best in their class). Since then, I have compared them side by side to several other <$1000 binoculars and they are better than the options by Leupold, Zeiss, Vortex, Bushnell, and Nikon (Monarch 5s). I have purchased and returned SLCs, ELs, and Conquests because none of them were better enough than my Monarch 7s to justify the expense of the upgrade. Seriously, if you are on a budget, buy these. If you have never had binoculars before and want to check it out, buy these. If you need a spare pair of binoculars, buy these. If you aren't on a budget, have already owned binoculars, and don't need a spare pair, buy these. Mine are starting to show serious signs of wear. The housing is busted near one of the objective lenses, the rubber armoring has been worn down to nothing and is peeling back at the bridge, and one of the eyepieces has been busted for a year. I've been meaning to send them in and see what Nikon can do about repairing them. I will update this once completed.

Well done Nikon...

Love these...I own Vortex Razor HD 10x42 and Minox BL 8x44HD. (latest version of both) Nikon’s a gift to my daughter for birding. I have no experience with the heavy hitters Leica/Zeiss/Swarovski. What I will say, is that these have a very wide engulfing view that is very, very clear. Focus wheel is just right. Eyecups function and feel great. Compared to what I own and use, these are equal to my eyes. My other two made in Japan and Germany respectively. The Vortex Razor’s at $ The Minox $ or so. The Monarch 7 ...Made in China. Summary: Excellent!!! Well done Nikon.

Superb Image Quality. Great Value!

I've spent several weeks comparing these binoculars side-by-side with Vortex Razor HD binoculars. In everything but the dimmest light conditions the image quality of these binoculars is equal to or better than the Razors (which retail at 2x the cost of these Nikons). The field width of these binoculars is among the best available in an 8x42 binocular. The depth of focus is excellent. These two attributes taken together make it easier to locate birds in the bins after finding them with the naked eye. The image is very sharp on center. It appears that the compromise in performance to achieve good breadth and depth of field is in edge to edge sharpness. The sharpness does drop off a bit toward the edge of the field of view. Central sharpness is excellent. The softening is noticeable but not objectionable. Image brightness in the daytime is very good. As the sun sets and the light begins to fade, the more expensive Vortex binoculars begin to shine. The Razors do maintain contrast better in low light conditions. I also compared these to the Nikon Monarch 5 binoculars. The wider field of view, sharper image quality, and overall greater brightness easily justify the extra investment over the 5's. Overall these are by far the best birding binoculars in their price category. You'd have to spend several times the money to find a better pair of binoculars. No wonder these are regularly picked by birding magazines as the best value winner.

Love it!

Feels very balanced in the hand and lets me see what I want to see. Easy to focus. The lens covers and rain cover operate easily, so I'm looking at my subject while my husband is still fiddling with his cheaper binocular's covers.

Great optics

Great optics within the Nikon family and cost range. I have had the Monarch ATB (now 3) for over a decade. It still does the job. As I got older I was looking for something brighter and wider. This does the job. There is a noticeable improvement in field of view. Brightness better but not blindingly noticeable. I did try the Monarch 5 but found no benefit. Therefore, if you want and upgrade from a good basic binocular go with the 7. But if you don't wear glasses or are under 50 then 3 or 5 are also good.

Compares well to much more expensive ones

I own the Monarch 7 8X42 as well as Swarovski 8.5X42, which cost something like 5vie times as much. In most situations, it is difficult to tell the difference. If you look very hard you will note that the Monarch has a little bit more rectilinear distortion, stays sharp only about 80% of the way to the edge vs. 100%, and has somewhat less contrast when looking near a strong light. None of these differences are big, with the contrast being the most noticeable and then only when looking near the light source. While I was evaluating "super binoculars," I also found that the Leica have much more rectilinear distortion. The Monarch 7 stands up very well indeed against both those super-expensive binoculars. And the field of view of the Monarch 7, eight degrees, is a real winner, beating both the Leica and the Swarovski (by only 0.4 degrees in the latter case). In short, you will not regret getting a Monarch 7.

No worldwide lifetime guarantee

The much vaunted lifetime worldwide guarantee for Nikon binoculars is false. Less than 3 tears after buying my top of the range Monarch 7s one eyepiece came loose. Binoculars are supposed to be covered by a worldwide lifetime guarantee. This was not honoured when I sent them for service in Indonesia, despite much discussion.

Really good for the money

These binos are really good. Definitely not as good as the binos that go for $1,500+, but for 95% of the world these meet and exceed what is needed. I had a long time birder (50+ years) try them and he remarked that they were excellent due to the FOV, amount of light they let in, and the relatively light weight.

A step to heaven for birdwatchers

I am so delighted with theese binoculars.. Monarch 7 are so clear ... even when the sun goes down and it get's a bit darker.. Also, they are also sharp vision and so pleasant to use. Very light so you don't get a neckache even after a few hours of use. Previously I had a pair of Monarch 5 that I loved and had to replace since I had lost them.. they were good but Monarch 7 gives me much more satisfaaction.. probably because of the 8 degree angle of view ...Theese are really great binoculars that I would highly recommend to birdwatchers and nature wildlife.... The only thing is that the eyepiece cap is much too big and doesn't fit at all.. Instead, I tried the ones of my old Monarh 5 that fit perfectly ;-) Hope this review helped.

upgrade time

I was in search of an upgrade from my 9x32 Denali ($) I had bought some 8yrs ago and kept running into the Nikon Monarch name. Upon testing some at a local store I purchased them here . Yes price was a big issue. To move into the realm of fully coated optics and ED glass is to say the least a treat. I can make out details on birds I could never see before. They are easy to focus and track small birds through trees with little or no trouble. Which is nice as I wear rx glasses I am into wildlife photography and see these going with me all the time. I am no expert by any means but in a midrange set of bins these are incredible. The only negative I have is the case. Who would design a case with a lid that doesn't cover the binocular completely?? Evidently Nikon believes this is the way to go.
