I fell onto my bag with my camera inside and the cushioning protected everything (except my rear).
I have spent countless hours reading reviews and forums trying to find the perfect bag to keep my Nikon body + 200-500mm lens + hood together and easily pop it into and out of a bag. I finally got frustrated and bought this bag, not because anyone recommended it but, because it was relatively inexpensive and fit the biggest requirement - fits everything without being a massive bag. I have been stunned with how pleased I am with it. My camera pops in and out of the bag easily with all three parts attached so I'm ready to start shooting fast. It zips halfway down so I don't feel like I'm jamming my camera in by the lens. I slipped on ice the first day I used this and fell back onto my bag. My camera and lens survived the fall inside the well-cushion bag. For long walks, my back starts hurting because it's a sling bag, not a backpack, but I'm super pleased to have finally found a minimal, protective bag that lets me keep all parts attached, including the lens hood. The side mesh pockets are great, allowing me to carry extra disks, batteries, a small bottle of water, or even a monopod pretty easily. It's not the bag I would take on a full day hike where I need to carry more (extra jacket, first aid kit, food, etc.), but for a quick outing to photograph some birds, this is perfect!

Better Than Expected
Better than expected with 3 customizable padding components. My D5 and 200-500 easily fits. Tried a 300 2.8 which fits as well. Other than no side pouches, quite pleased with the padding and contingency options with this bag. Quality is exceptional.

Great protection for a long lens
Great protection for a long lens. It comes with extra pads that can be configured for your gear. I use it for a D850, grip, and Sigma 500/4.5. Fits snug with padding all around. I use the loops to strap a monopod on the side. I'll probably get a different padded accessory pouch to hold tele-extender, xtra batteries, etc... to tuck in the space underneath the lens collar.

Worth every penny
I really love this case! I have a nikon 300mm F2.8. I can put this lens in the case with hood on....attached to my camera and still have a little bit of room for something small. It's quite convenient to pull everything out at once and be ready to shoot. Love that it also has straps for a tri/monopod. Worth every penny!

Solid, weather and travel protection.
Sling protection for my NIKON 400mm including 2 piece Hood. Very well made and does the job. Lots of extra padding inserts to adapt to variation of fragile inhabitants. Could use some application instructions for all the inserts but this has never been NIKON's strong suit. Works as intended and I feel comfortable recommending it to travelers and hikers.

Great Case - I now own two.
I have had a similar case for my Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 200-400mm f4 G ED VR and loved it. It does take a bit to get the lens in right but it protects the lens well and is great to travel with. I liked the case so much I bought a second case for my AF-S NIKKOR 600mm f4 G ED VR. I have heard some say the the 600mm lens won't fit, that's nonsense. It fits and works great.

Excellent case for the 600mm lens
This case holds my Nikon 600mm lens with both lens hoods on in the stored position, placed backwards on the lens. Of course it would not hold the lens with the hoods in the fully extended position. I also have the foot on with a plate and a padded cushion around the body end of the lens. It offers excellent protection and convenient means of carrying a heavy lens.

re Bad Fit Review
One reviewer found that the case cannot hold the 600mm lens. I'm not challenging that, but that review did make me cautious about getting CL-L2 for my 500mm lens. I went ahead and got one. It fits. I can even leave the 1.7 extender attached.

Does as advertised
A convenient way to carry a Nikon 400mm 2.8G or similar sized lens with or without a camera body mounted on it. Not big enough for a teleconverter mounted too, but you can't always have everything. The shoulder strap support could be a better design for long hikes, but for transportation in a car and short walking distances, it is perfect. I use it all the time.

Perfect Bag for the 200-400 AF-S VR
This is the bag supplied with the 200-400 AF-S VR, which is a great lens. When I suffered a house fire, this bag protected my lens from smoke damage. I bought this one as a replacement. Sometimes I use it to transport the lens to an event, if I'm not using one of my larger camera bags.
