Purchased a used lens hood. It looked very good and fit well. I am pleased to have found it as this particular hood is notorious for its poor fit and rather high price if new. This one will serve me well and I do recommend a used product from Adorama.

Dropped my D750 with the 28-300 attached from a height of about three feet. The lens hood took the hit. The only damage was the on the lens hood itself. This hood is a direct replacement and I never leave home without one.

The old one was mounted 'out' and it was the first impact when the heavy camera met the football stadium steps. It was OK for an instant, then the falling weight of the person carrying the D810 piled on and broke it all to pieces! Late Hit! ... This replacement is perfect. Bayonet twist is firm and clicks into place securely. All ready for action again. Absolutely NOT an illegal substitution. The crowd cheered.

I priced a new Nikon hood for my VR28-300 to replace the one I lost, but the price seemed somewhat high to me. So I immediately checked Adorama's quality inventory of used gear. I was pleased to find a like new hood for half the new cost. So if you are in need of a replacement for a lost item, be sure to check out Adorama. They just might have what you need in their used gear department.

Just have to add my two cents worth, too. This is perhaps the dumbest hood on the market. I nurse-maided this hood on my lens for several years and it finally fell off for good. How many times can you catch it before it drops off a cliff. Come on, Nikon, get something that works, i.e. a secure hood, if you're going to charge mega bucks for a piece of plastic.

Very happy with the lens but the lens hood is made of flimsy plastic which broke very soon after I started using the lens.

Have lost and replaced two of these hoods as they won't stay attached -- even under light use. Was considring making a velcroe attachemet before I lost the third one.

As has been commented before, this sole alternative from Nikon is very much lacking. This purchase was for a slightly used Nikon original part, however, it has the same features as a new one. The hood is just too flimsy (very light plastic) and comes off too easily from the lens. Nikon just did a poor job of manufacturing this hood, as they can and have done better in the past and since. Don't get me wrong, it does its job well enough, but for such a pricey item, it could have been much more rugged; not prone to break so easily and stay put on the lens much better. So it comes down to either you deal with it or you don't.

Does the job of shading the lens. Sadly, it falls off easily and the plastic breaks with a short drop (less than a foot) that does nothing to the lens or camera (D7000). I am sure Nikon can do better.

I haven't seen any other option to replace a broken lens hood but this one for the 28-300mm f3.5-5.6 Nikon lens. I noticed it's a bit loose and takes a little fiddling to make sure it's on correctly. However, it does do the job once secured and I hope it will not loosen. I have to say that when my camera fell with lens and lens hood attached, it was the lens hood that saved it! So, loose or not, it stays on.

This NIkon lens hood serves its intended purpose of shielding light from the surface of the lens throughout the zoom range. The only problem is that it is easy to become detached from the lens and loose carrying the camera. This is the 2nd replacement for the original lens hood.

Haven't had as much trouble with the thing falling off as others! Seems well made and functional.

As others state, this bayonet mount lens hood comes off unintentionally, far too often. Thanks to Nikon's poor design, be prepared to buy replacements. Mine went for a 'hike' in the Grand Canyon (and I'm not going to retrieve it! ;-) )

Fit is too loose--hood continually chatters away. Out of a half dozen Nikon lenses with hoods, this is the only one that doesn't fit properly.

I use the lens shade everytime I shoot outside. However this lens shade will come off very easily when bumped lightly on something. Nikon needs to redesign the locking mechanism to secure the shade onto the lens more snugly.

I put my brand new lens and hood in my camera bag. My bag got compressed a little and the hood snapped in half. I own other Nikon lenses and their hoods are still going strong after years of use and sometimes abuse. This hood is too flimsy.

This lens hood just doesn't fit well, or my 28-300 is the problem. It falls off easily when you use the lens - i have lost two of them

Ditto to all the above reviews! Lost my hood as well! While my camera was on my shoulder, I always kept my hand on the hood because it becoming detached so easily! Any solutions?

Add me to the list of disappointed. You know how expensive it will be to replace, and the Super Glue jobs aren't sturdy. You find yourself walking backwards, or cradling your lens like a baby. So, What do you do? Call in Red Green, and Duck Tape that baby to the lens barrel. And how about if the lens cap that comes with a wide angle lens fits over a thin filter?

I also have the 28-300 lens which I bought recently for an Orlando Holiday. On the 2nd day the hood broke-off! I also own the 18-105 and the 70-300 lenses and the hoods for those cheaper lenses are so much better. Its a pity that Nikon decided to save a few bucks on a cheap hood to go with actually a very good expensive lens. Guys, please come up with something more sturdy.

I've had many Nikon products over the years and few have disappointed me as much as this hood. It's inconceivable to me that Nikon would couple this hood with a $1K lens....just doesn't make sense. Nothing to add from what's been said here and other sites: the fit is sloppy and can easily fall off. Nikon should pony up and fix this by providing a better solution for people who have bought this lens. At this point I'll try a 3rd party hood as soon as it's offered. Can't believe I'm saying that...... "getting a 3rd party hood for my Nikon lens"?

I couldn't remember how many times the hood fell off after I got the camera out of the bag, and as expected, I lost it. I didn't know how much it cost until I tried to replace it. It is way overprice for a piece of plastic. Googled it and the cheapest price was $35. Way to go Nikon.

I own a nikon D700 and Have recently purchased the 28-300 nikkor G AF S lens which came with the HB-50 hood. While in a DSLR case (which will accomadate a 70-200 VRII G f2.8 lens and hood) with the hood in the stored or backward position the hood became dislodged while extracting the camera from the case. Which caused the "bayonet locking tabs" to break. This happened so easily that I wasn't even aware of it till I couldn't attach the hood at all. I think that at the price one pays for genuine Nikon lenses we should get a superior product, which this just isn't!
