Questions & Answers

Don B : Adorama calls this "Heavy Duty Version" Is there a non-heavy duty version.? I lost my old SB-600 and am purchasing a replacement. This looks like a good replacement / upgrade.?PAT G : This is a Great flash.Unlike the 900 sreies that goes into hibernation when shooting mutibles quickly, this flash keeps on flashing.ALEKSANDER K : I wouldn't call SB-700 TTL AF a "heavy duty" flash. Comparing to SB28 or Canon's SB580EX this one is much less powerful. It is a very good flash though. Most of the time I use the flash in a bounce mode and my estimate is that this flash has only about half the power of Canon's SB580EX.STEVE J : I still use an SB-600 and purchased the 700 for my D3X. It is much easier to use and more user friendly then the SB-600. You will not be sorry you purchased it.DAVID A : Yes this will be a good replacement for the sb 600. It is an upgarde, some user friendly features and you can use it as a wireless commander for other flashes. The sb 400 would be a light duty version I guess, but that would be a step back...unless you want minimal flash that is smaller and lighter. Best of luckmichael c : I don't know of two versions of the SB-700. That said I really like the SB-700 so far, I'm still learning how to use it to it's potential.KARA P : I will never go back to the SB600, these things are the best! I use them for everything even off camera lighting! Fast, reliable, and beautiful light!Tom I : "I've not used the discontinued SB-600 but did compare specs when I purchased my SB-700. The SB-700 has plenty of power but my understanding is that the SB-600 may have had just a hair more power. The SB-700 has a more sophisticated operation that is similar to the SB-910. My SB-700 works fine but a couple of considerations- 1). The SB-700 does not accept an external battery pack. I have shot several events and one wedding and the flash never slowed down and I never needed to swap batteries. 2). For a lot less money my Yongnuo YN467 delivers similar performance at 1/4 the cost. The YN467 has slightly less output but in practice I do not notice the difference. The YN467 operates flawlessly on camera in ttl mode and fires remotely from Commander Mode from my D7000 HOWEVER, it flashes manually without ttl output adjustments. For casual shooting the Yongnuo is a better buy. For serious wedding photography I'd look at the more powerful and more expensieve SB-910 that does accept a separate battery pack. Hope that helps."Tom I : I've not used the discontinued SB-600 but did compare specs when I purchased my SB-700. I wanted to get the SB-600 when I bought it, but found out Nikon had replaced the 600 with the 700.DARRELL S : I have 2 SB-700's and they work great on and off the camera. I do not ever recall seeing the SB-700 being referred to as a heavy duty version. Theses flashes do everything I want to do as a serious amateur. If you are looking for more power suggest you consider Nikon's SB-910 which will add several hundred dollars to the cost of a new flash. If you were happy with your SB-600, you'll love the SB-700 for its ease of use and good performance.DARYL B : I have this unit. To the best of my knowledge there is only one model. It may have been characterized as "heavy duty" because it is very well built and can stand up to considerable misuse, i.e., you can throw it around without worrying about it breaking. That said, I still baby mine and keep it in its case with the color filters, diffuser and cleaning cloth when I'm not using it. You do have to be careful with the pull-out diffuser screen but this is true of all units, so equipped. IMHO, this is a very good upgrade from the SB-600.DASH B : I believe the 'Heavy Duty," refers only to the bundled flash cord. If you care about that, it is a pretty sturdy cord, but you probably won't need it. I've never owned a 600, but I did a bunch of research before I chose the 700 over a used 600. It seemed to me as though if you're ok with the new controls (I like them), and don't mind a very slight reduction in power, the 700 is the way to go. I like mine.GEOFFREY M : Buy it, I have 2 and they are awesome!
Shopper : I am looking this flash for D800? can any one help me whether it will be a compatible one or not?JOSE D : Look in Nikon USA web site it has a chart that will guide you.STANLEY S : Yes. The D800 will trigger the SB700 as a slave or work on the hotshoe.JIM C : I love my sb700 on my D5100. This is an extract from the D800 product information. Accessory shoe: Standard ISO 518 hot-shoe contact with data contacts and safety lock Creative Lighting System: With Speedlights such as the SB-910, SB-900, SB-800, SB-600, and SB-R200, supports Advanced Wireless Lighting, Auto FP High-Speed Sync, Flash Color Information Communication, modeling flash and FV Lock. You will find this under Flash Control: ---- TTL: i-TTL flash control using 91,000-pixel RGB sensor are available with built-in flash and SB-910, SB-900, SB-700, or SB-400; i-TTL balanced fill-flash for digital SLR is used with matrix and center-weighting metering, standard i-TTL flash for digital SLR with spot metering ----- I have a D7000 and SB-700 (purchased from Adorama) and they work very well together. I am sure the D800 will be the same.HOWARD S : It is and is shown as tested with the D800 in the D800 system chart published by Nikon.GREG N : Hello, I have a Nikon D7000, so I can't say with 100% certainty that it would be good for a D800... BUT... I would bet my last paycheck that it would be compatible. I would be very very shocked if you purchased it and found out it was not compatible for the D800. Maybe go onto Nikon's USA website and find a support email link and ask them if you want to be really sure... but if I was in your position, I would not even be worried about it. Good luck and enjoy your new D800 ! -- GregURBAN A : Yes it is fully compatible with the D800DAVID C : yes, compatibleANDREW W : No reason I can think of for it not to work. Both support the Nikon flash protocols. You can use the built-in flash on the D800 to remotely trigger the D700, or use the SB700 on the camera (or with the remote cable) directly. It's a great flash!
Shopper : Why Did You Choose This?DALE I : this was the best deal i found the day I was looking at it. I have been wanting to get the SB-700 for a while already.GREG N : Great Flash & small enough to fit in my basic 'walk around' camera bag.KEVIN P : Great flash! Works with my d7000 without a cord using the camera's built in commander mode. I can set the flash output in the camera and use the built in flash to control the sb700. Wonderful!ANDREW W : Most of what I want in the SB910, but in a smaller, lighter and cheaper package.DAVE R : Beause the SB-900 series is way over-priced and the SB-700 was the next best alternative.

IT works but go with another.

We stopped using Nikon flashes years ago in favor of Godox which is also Flashpoint. Speedlights are way over priced and don't perform as well especially when it comes to battery life. Godox/Flashpoint are spot on with true iTTL and the same features as Nikons but at a much better price.

Great flash for the price!

Works great, I primarily use this as a secondary flash to my SB-5000 when I want to pop a bit more light into a photo but have used it on camera for military homecomings in the evening.

NO EXTERNAL BATTERY OPTION.

Flash is great I just REALLY miss the option for an external battery option. Yes, it recycles quickly but there are times when the AA?s are not enough. It?s disappointing that we can?t add a quantum battery to the flash any more.

Love the Nikon SP-700

I have been taking photographs for years, but have been afraid to use a speedlight. I read many reviews and watched some videos before choosing the Nikon SP-700. I have a Nikon D-7500 camera and thought it would be a good choice for me and my camera. I am very happy with my choice. It is easy to use and all the functions marked clearly on the flash. It took some time to set up my camera for off flash use but once I figured that out it was easy to operate. I would recommend the SP-700.

High functioning flash for the Nikon Dxxxx DSLR

My trusty SB-600 died after 11 years of what would probably be called average use. I read the criticism in the review universe but went ahead and bought the SB-700. And, yes, the controls are too small and the output is not the same. The functioning, though, is right were you need it with perfect integration with my D7500. I hope it holds up as well as the SB-600. It gets only four stars because of the almost 80% increase in price.

Nikon SB-700 Speedlight Exceeds Expectations.

The Nikon SB-700 flash unit worked perfectly right from the box. It is a replacement for an earlier Nikon Speedlight so I expected similar quality and performance but the SB-700 actually exceeded my expectations. The quality of the 'flash' (the metering) produced a better balanced output, resulting in perfect color and balance with the first shot and all that followed. I know that Nikon makes more expensive flash units but the SB-700 is working fine for me and certainly out performing my expectations. Therefore, I think the SB-700 is a great value for the money and you will not be disappointed.

Nice Flash

Good Flash. Works great, especially in TTL mode. To me Nikon flashes are way overpriced (the reason for 4 stars).

would buy it again

I use my Nikon SB 700 as a second off-camera light (I have two) with various light modifiers, or as a backup, on/off-camera, mostly when shooting on location. User-friendly. Reliable. Light weight. Definitely a must-have.

FEATURED REVIEWS

Yes, this is the one.

I am a passionate amateur photographer. I do not suffer sub-standard equipment very long. While I can't afford the very best equipment, the equipment I buy had better be worth my hard earned money. I originally was going to buy an SB-600, but they were discontinued, so I bought the SB-700. After reviewing the specs, I found that the SB-700 actually has slightly less flash power than the SB-600, and some other minor differences, that would seem to make it a lesser flash for more money. I wasn'...

The SB-700 Is Indestructable!

By ARCCPhotos

I am a professional photographer in San Antonio, TX and I often use my SB-700 flash for off camera flash (OCF). About a week ago I was photographing a family next to a river and I had my flash mounted to an OCF rig and 24" x 24" softbox and sandbagged. A strong gust of wind blew the rig (despite the sandbag) into the river! I rushed over and I was too late... I fished the rig out of the water and immediately pulled the batteries. This flash was totally waterlogged. I was so upset.. This was ...
