The small size, yet sizable power, of the Nikon SB-R200 Wireless Speedlight allows for the most flexible and successful solutions for difficult subjects. Illuminating solid and opaque glass sculpture is a real challenge. The photo below was taken with two SB-R200 Speedlights strategically placed inside a large lightbox. The shutter speed is 1/125 of a second, the aperture is f/8, the ISO is 100, Auto White Balance, and the exposure mode is Matrix Metering.

I got the R1 flash system and i really don't think their is any flash system out there for macro (or micro) that can come close what this system can do. I added another SB-R 200 for the creativity aspect of having 2 flashes on the ring and one off (sometime all 3 positioned differently) and i always get fantastic results! This flash is intended for close up photography and it does that beautifully!

If your camera is compatible with CLS, and D-70 started out with the SB-R200 and the R1C1 unit. R1C1/R1 is the way I'm working with D-300, for close-up. The remote kit. You may have to set your flash up in your camera 'Menu'. But I think you can use the pop up flash as a commander. It really depends on your needs. I do a lot of scientific close-up photography consisting of lots of detailed parts and assemblies. Using (3) SB-R200 heads allows sufficient control of lighting to capture all the important details of each experiment.

The primary use for this great little flash unit is for close up photography of flowers . It is perfect for my needs. My only negative comment is based on my not remembering to turn it off. Therefore I'd like it to turn off automatically when not in use for a set period of time.

I use the SB-R200 exclusively for close-ups of insects and spiders. It gives the proper lighting and allows you to get great depth of field by using small apertures. There are many other possible uses for this product, but I stick to the insects and spiders. Cons? Takes a while to set up and then gets in the way for normal photography, plus you need to be careful you don't knock the SB-R200 off by knocking into something since they do noticeably increase the space occupied by the camera.

I use this with the Nikon Close-up Speedlight System I added a third one to the system and it is awesome. It's built fine but the diffuser comes off to easily when working in the field and it uses batteries fast I've added a little hook & loop and solved the problem

I use this product in my pediatric office to take Macro photos for skin lesions and other diseases. In the past, when I tried to take close-up or macro pics, the photo would be overexposed when I took it with a flash, and too dark without a flash. the SB-R200 is a wonderful solution to this. I did buy the full R1C1 system plus an extra SB-R200. Using this gear with my Nikkor 105 mm Macro lense is a great tool for me at the office. I would absolutely recommend this product to any person who is serious about macro photography. Thank you Nikon.

I bought this to add another SB-R200 to my R1C1 kit. This rounds out the kit to set up more options for close-up photography.

I own the Nikon R1C1 system and opted to purchase one additional SB-R200 to allow more creative lighting. Such as two mounted on the adapter and this third off to the side or behind. These are wonderful portable units; I almost always carry them in my bag for Micro Photography work. Please don't confuse these units with the SB-700. The main purpose of the SB-R200 is for close up work or augment your main flash. When used in combination the results are outstanding. When used as a primary Micro Photograpy flash system the results are excellent as well. Very flexible in the design and operation. Some complain about the non-rechargeable battery but I keep spares not only for the flash but camera in my bag thus it is not an issue for me, and don't understand anyone who do not carry spare batteries out in the field. In fact I can shoot hundreds of photos before the battery even shows signs of drain. - Hands down the best portable remote flash for close up work out there. Very dependable, and rugged enough to make the hike. Working with the SB R200 is simple and elegant and in almost all cases produce lighting that is perfect. Comes with a stand, filters and diffuser. Nikon calls it CLS for a reason - I love mine.

It would have been better to be supported with NIMAH AA size Battery instead of SR2

Bought a third unit to add to the two that come with the R1 kit. I mount two on the ring on the front of the lens and use the third one with the diffuser that comes with the kit. Third strobe with diffuser adds studio-like softness to macro shots of insects and other small subjects in the field. Also supplements relatively low output you get with just two strobes.
