Questions & Answers

MIKE C : Would this unit allow commander capability with a SB-800 on a Nikon F5?MIKE L : The function of this remote trigger is to be a remote trigger. It does that quite well. It does nothing but to be a remote trigger.
Shopper : Will this work in all modes of my camera D7000? I am wanting to use my sb-910 remotely in the sports mode.CLARK S : YESED S : Can't give a good reply, have not used it with that setup. I noted the write-up say not compatible with DSLRs.BRUCE E : You do not need a wu-4 for this, The sb-910 has built-in remote already. Put the D7000 in command mode. This operation should be covered in both the flash & camera user manuals.MICHAEL A. S : The SU-4 is a wireless slave for TTL, which is film camera TTL. Your d7000 is iTTL. The two will not work together as the pre flashes from your D7000 will prematurely trip the su-4 flash. I am not familiar with the cls flash system on the D7000, however I am familiar with the D800 flash system, and it can be set up in the su-4 mode of operation. In other words regular wireless TTL (not ittl). If your sports mode performs similarly, then yes it would work. You do not need an su-4 for your 910, as it already has a wireless slave built in, and this slave is far more sophisticated than the su-4. The SU-4 is primarily the nikon way of firing the old film era flashes, that do not have a built in slave. It is nothing more than an on-off switch. The new cls system has a bunch of pre flashes that tell the sb910 to not only fire, but also the exact ratio of fill light desired for the shot.Your d7000 most likely can sync your 910 and an su-4 equipped older nikon TTL flash in standard wireless ttl mode. Why would you want to do that though?
Donna M : Will this work with a Nikon D7000 and a nikon sb700 speed light?CLARK S : Yes it does. works very well.ADITI S : Yes, it should.CHARLES M : I returned it. Could not get it to work.MICHAEL A. S : the sb700 has a built in wireless slave, and does need any other wireless attachment to work correctly with a d7000. This is both with ittl and manual. You can use the su4 to fire any flash in manual mode. Set the d7000 flash to manual as well. Look at the results in your monitor and adjust the aperture till correct. The su4 will not work correctly in Ittl mode with your d7000. It is from the film camera era, and only can work with ttl mode without any pre flashes. Modern ittl use preflashes to get the exposure right. Those pre flashes coming from the dslr would prematurely set off any flash attached to a su-4. Confusing, Huh. Besides, I have found that wireless ittl or even the older ttl is unreliable, and does not always work correctly. Setting the flash and camera in manual is 100% reliable, even without radio triggers. learn the manual way.

Works well

This is used on my Nikon SB-28 flash. As with any IR type device this works best inside. It does work in a softbox, behind a product, or behind furniture. I have placed it in a room off a hallway adding light to that area of a home; it did fire the flash Though it is line of sight, however when placed behind furniture in a large well lighted room it may not fire. Make sure the sensor is facing the sending flash or where it can pick up the bounced flash. When used outside it must face the sending flash. Though I like SU-4 I have purchased Radio Frequency (RF) transmitters and receivers. In more diverse situations, inside outside, and over distances, RF receivers are reliable; whereas IR can be hit or miss.

good product from Nikon

After I purchased it, I only tested it and then I put it in my storage. Because I eventually decide to get Pocket Wizard for wireless lighting. This one works great for what it is designed for. I like the way it does not require any battery but i do not line the "must-in-sight" requirement.

Useful for Nikon SB-28

Some flash devices do not have a sensor to fire them such as the Nikon SB-28. Putting this on the SB-28 provides the ability to place it within my shooting environment having the flash fire. Some Nikon flash, others as well, do not have a IR widow. When you want to fire the SB-28 using wireless this device is a must.

It is old but does what it has to do, brilliantly!

I got it for my sb-700 flashlight, and then discovered that it was not necessary as my D7000 has commander flash available. But the SU-4 eliminates the annoying sound of the flash and has perfect timing with my camera, it can also be used with flashes with no wireless features like the SB-400, cool!!

No SG-1 included

It evidently doesn't come from Nikon, no SG-1 flash guard (for camera's built-in flash unit) included, which is standard inclusion with a Nikon SU-4.

On the nose

I use the SU-4 Wireless Remote with Nikon SB-28 flashes in manual mode in my home studio. So far they have proved very reliable.

Great little gadget!

It allows me to use my SB-28DX with the CLS. It fires every time, it's easy to use, and it has saved me from having to buy a whole new flash.

Ideal for use with Nikon speedlights in multiple flash lighting setups to reduce background shadows, provide a second light for fill or main light purposes, and for background or accent lights.

When connected to an accessory Nikon Speedlight, the SU-4 enables wireless TTL multiple flash control while using the cameras built-in Speedlight as a master unit. The Diffuser SG-2 is provided to reduce the flash output of the built-in Speedlight.

You can use several SU-4 Flash Controllers simultaneously, too.

NOTE: This unit is not compatible with digital SLR cameras.
