I bought this to use with a Z30 attached to a Peak designs capture clip on my backpack strap while ski touring and mountain biking. If purchasing a Z30 (or similar) the cost is so low to bundle in this lens, it's an incredible bargain. I also use a Sigma 56mm f/1.4 lens with the Z30, but this little lens is so good, and so unobtrusive, that I am only using the Sigma when I go out in low light. The image quality is remarkable, especially considering cost and size. The stabilization enables me to shoot stationary subjects hand held at 1/30. This is the perfect travel lens when paired with a smaller Z body. I am very, very impressed.

While its plastic feel doesn't lend an air of confidence, this lens more than makes up for it by its performance. It's sharp nearly edge to edge wide open. It focuses quickly. And it's quite reasonably priced. It's a wonderful lens for the Z fc, Z 5, and Z 50 owners.

The 16-50mm lens is very sharp for a kit lens. Focus is fast and VR works great on the Z50. I would recommend this lens for anyone who did not purchase this lens with as part of the kit when they bought the Z50.

Yes, it is only DX, mostly plastic and slow (3.5-6.3). However, It is extremely lightweight (130g) and have all that I usually need for video shooting on the go: good video compatible autofocus, vibration reduction. It is very sharp on open apertures. Very good companion for lightweight gimbal.

One of the best lenses I own. Clear images, light weight great for all around photography. The pancake feature is unique and useful.

even though this is a great lens that i would recommend for purchase. the lens is a bit small for me since i am used to the size of the bigger lenses. at only 4.4oz this lens is very light. i used this lens with my Nikon Z7 for a short time. the lens is so light that you may not notice that they lens is attacked to the camera unless you are looking at or interacting with the lens in some way other than having the camera hanging around your neck with a neck-strap. for those who have smaller hands and/or is used to smaller camera lenses and owns the Z50, this lens is a must buy for use as a primary lens.

I use this lens with my Z6. The combination of this lens and camera give me a very lightweight and compact camera with excellent results. I was originally thinking about buying a new lightweight camera for street photography and walking around but this combo does it all. I highly recommend it.

Many larger lenses do not possess the quality of this little giant. Sharp color photos in bright sun or in low light.. No matter if you are shooting video or portaits you will get clean crisp pictures with this lens. Makes your camera very compact for travel. I use mine on the new Z50 and love every feature.

This lens is the only one I purchased for the Z50. The size is perfect for the Z50, but it's really too slow for low light photography. I have most of the other S-Line Z lenses for my Z6 and Z7 cameras. But those lenses defeat the purpose of having a compact camera like the Z50. I hope that Nikon produces some pancake-sized fast primes for the Z50, like a 35mm and 50mm equivalent at f/1.8 or faster. They would make the Z50 the ideal street photography and pocketable travel camera in the Nikon arsenal. In the mean time, this lens will have to do.

I really like the new Nikon DX Z50 16-50mm for it's compact size and light weight. In the past I have had two Nikon DX cameras, a D3200 and a D5500. I liked the 3200 and loved the 5500. I had Nikon DX lenses for those bodies. Then I bought a full frame Nikon D750 and bought some FX lenses. A 24-120mm F4 and a 50mm F1.4. The FX lenses were bigger, heavier, and more expensive than the DX ones. I found the previous DX lenses great for casual photos but the FX lenses on the DX Body were sharper and just a step up from DX. This is exactly the same result I am getting with my Z50 when I use the DX Z lenses with it like the 16-50 and then try one of my full frame ZS lenses like my 24-70 or 50mm ZS. For almost all photos the 16-50 is great. But when you shoot landscape or macro where you need just the last once of detail I like the bigger much more expensive ZS lenses better. I have used the 16-50 in many family events and also some landscape and botanical shots. It absolutely should be bought if you get a Z50.

Construction wise it seems cheaply made, however some plastics today are very tuff. Time will tell. Size is very unique and practical and makes it a great carry around lens. Sharp in good light but the 6.3 makes it poor for low light even though the Z50 body does very good at higher iso. All said for the money it’s a pretty good lens for a kit lens. Hope all future lenses don’t fall in. The f 4 and 6.3 , sort of negates the camera bodies gains in higher iso.

This is a great little lens. It's sharp, light and small and a great value as a kit lens when bought with the camera.

I have really enjoyed this lens so far. It is small and light and hardly realize it is there on my Z6. I have used this lens to do a number of sunsets and have even had a couple of them shown on our local Television News Weather reports. This is a really fine lens and very complementary to my Z6.

It seemed too compact to be true, but it's very sharp and fast focusing. It's like you're just shooting with the body.

I love this small lens. This small but powerful lens is great for travel which makes it alot lighter to carry. I have attached a few photos that I have taken with the 16-50mm

To my surprise, this tiny new lens yields results equal to my Nikon professional normal range zoom lenses. See the attached six photos taken with little or no enhancing.

I recommend this lens on Z6 or Z7 for street photography!
The absolute smallest NIKKOR Z lens—the smallest DX format lens ever, in fact—the NIKKOR Z DX 16-50mm f/3.5-6.3 VR covers the sweet spot of the zoom range, letting you capture street scenes and landscapes as easily as portraits and close-ups. It has powerful Vibration Reduction (VR) image stabilization to keep your videos steady and your photos sharp. It focuses quickly and silently and surpresses focus breathing—ideal for recording videos and high-speed action. And when not in use, it retracts into itself for a compact profile and added protection.
Capture vibrant street scenes, landscapes, portraits, selfies, low light, action, how-to videos and more. This little powerhouse can do so much.
Delivers big imaging power and durability in an ultra-compact package. When used on the Z 50, you've got Nikon's smallest DX interchangeable lens camera configuration ever.
Built-in VR image stabilization keeps you sharp and steady, even when handheld. It also lets you shoot stills at slower shutter speeds (up to 4.5 stops*)—a huge advantage in low-light situations.
The NIKKOR Z DX 16-50mm f/3.5-6.3 VR's zoom range is ideal for everything from interviews and how-to videos to close-ups and establishing shots. Like high-end cinema lenses, it's designed to suppress focus breathing—a common occurrence with smartphones, that makes videos look amateurish. Plus, its AF motor, focusing ring and control ring are virtually silent, so the camera's built-in mic won't pick up noise from the lens during recording.
The NIKKOR Z DX 16-50mm f/3.5-6.3 VR uses a blazing fast, nearly silent stepping motor for autofocusing, and it performs brilliantly with Z series' Eye AF to keep focus right where you want it.
An Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass lens element reduces color defects and glare for sharper, clearer images with outstanding contrast.
Assign your favorite function to the control ring—aperture control (great for iris transitions during video recording), ISO adjustments, exposure compensation or manual focus.

NIKKOR Z: The front line of an imaging revolution.
Designed and optimized to take full advantage of the Z system's larger mount, Z lenses like the NIKKOR Z DX 16-50mm f/3.5-6.3 VR gather substantially more light, providing even illumination and improved sharpness from the center of the frame to the far edges. Autofocusing is fast and quiet. Video recording is clean and smooth with highly minimized focus breathing and reduced wobbling. Intuitive on-lens controls can be customized to your individual shooting style and so much more. Z lenses are designed with a sense of consistency that combines reliability and beauty with next-dimension optical performance for complete freedom in image creation.
Technology
Stepping Motor
NIKKOR Z lenses use a stepping motor for fast, accurate, smooth, quiet autofocus with reduced wobbling. This quiet drive system makes the lenses ideal for use when shooting video.
Electromagnetic Diaphragm Mechanism
An electromagnetic diaphragm mechanism in the lens barrel provides highly accurate electronic diaphragm or aperture blade control when using auto exposure during continuous shooting. With conventional D/G type lenses, the diaphragm blades are operated by mechanical linkage levers.
ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) Glass
An optical glass developed by Nikon that is used with normal optical glass in telephoto lenses to obtain optimum correction of chromatic aberrations.
IF Lens
A NIKKOR lens in which only the internal lens group shifts during focusing. Thus, IF NIKKORS do not change in size during AF operation, allowing for compact, lightweight lenses capable of closer focusing distances. These lenses will be designated with the abbreviation IF on the lens barrel.
Aspherical Lens
A lens with a curved, non-spherical surface. Used to reduce aberrations and enable a more compact lens size. Aspherical lenses minimize coma and other types of lens aberrations, even when used at the widest aperture. They are particularly useful in correcting distortion in wide-angle lenses and help contribute to a lighter, more compact design by reducing the number of standard (spherical) elements necessary. Aspherical lens elements correct these distortions by continuously changing the refractive index from the center of the lens.
Super Integrated Coating
Nikon Super Integrated Coating is Nikon's term for its multilayer coating of the optical elements in NIKKOR lenses.
Vibration Reduction
A Nikon in-lens technology that improves image stability by automatically compensating for camera shake. Lenses that offer VR will feature the abbreviation VR on the lens barrel.
