Review Summary

I read great reviews about this lens before I purchased it and I wasn't disappointed. It performs wonderfully on my Z7, and covers most of the range that I morally take photos of. Overall an excellent general purpose zoom for travel.

Well made, sharp lens. I'm fine with f4 on the Z6ii body. But the lens (at least my copy) has heavy, unacceptable vignetting at 70mm.

If I could give a 4.5 star review I would. For the price, f4 at best is not great. That said, everything else about the lens is great. Outdoors it renders very nicely, and is very sharp. Almost on the level of the incredibly sharp 50 1.8s at f4 which is saying something. I find it less useful indoors as it just doesn't gather alot of light, but for outdoor, daytime photography this thing is a beast.

The lens is great, but I wish I could have changed it to the new one that just came out: Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S Lens. Unfortunately, my order had already been put in the shipping process.

Great little lens. Feels great too. For my needs anyway. Your miles may very. This is not my only lens. You don?t get into interchangeable lens cameras to just have one lens. I mention that cuz this may not be as ?uh-doy? obvious to some people.

This lens is simply awesome. The photos are pretty much as good as with my Nikkor 24-70mm f 2.8. And it's lightweight! I love it.

An outstanding general purpose zoom lens. Sharp corner to corner even wide open, very good bokeh at longer focal lengths, and plenty fast enough for almost any professional application. Combine this with a few of the equally great Z primes for a versatile professional kit.

The 24-70 f/4 Nikkor S Zoom is a fantastically sharp and versatile zoom for any Z camera! As a landscape and product photographer, I use it with the Z7, and it balances and performs beautifully! Since I generally shoot in daylight or with strobes, I don't need anything faster than f/4, not to mention the weight (and price!) of this zoom is MUCH less than the f/2.8 counterpart. I've read reviews that compare the image quality of this to the f/2.8 counterpart, and it's quite close. Bottom line: if you don't require a "fast" lens, (i.e., the f/2.8 version of the NIkkor S Zoom, then this f/4 zoom is a stellar performer! Like others have said, the locking mechanism takes some getting used to, but, IMHO, it's worth it!

For a kit lens this produces some fantastic images. Very happy with the image quality and is a great travel/every day lens. Even seeing side by side comparisons with the f/2.8 version shows how the glass quality on this is great for the price point, especially if picked up with the camera. Only downside of this lens would be the locking mechanism is a little annoying, especially when trying to capture a quick shot.

I purchased this lens to use with my Z6 and did not know what to expect out of the new format and I was extremely happy with the results. I shoot a lot of wildlife, landscapes, and sports and so far, this lens has excelled in all three areas.

As others have been saying - 'butter smooth' operation and focus shift. I plan on spending a lot of time with this lens - too sweet to change. Happily awaiting a Z Mount 28-300, though!

I purchased the Z7 kit last year, and have been very happy with the24-70 f4 lens and the results from it. It's nice and compact, and I like the feature which causes it to lock. I've used it in extremely low light situations, where flash use was impossible, and on the beaches of the west side of the state of MI during one of the worst storms ever! All I can say is, this lens in combination with the Z7 has made me one proud Nikon owner

This lens is amazing, very sharp pictures, quick focusing, lightweight and very well made. Even at the 70mm zoom, the lens can focus down to almost macro quality. Hoping that Nikon will soon deliver a longer range lens, like a 70 to 300 or even a 28 to 300.

This lens performs great in all the situations I have encountered. Quality, sharpness and picture have blown me away. Can't wait for the Z Series70-300 lens to hit the market, tired of carrying the FTZ ring to use with my telephoto. Simple will be much easier!!

Love this compact well built lens. This lens blows the 2.8 G 24-70 out of the water. I own the Z6 and Z7 and this lens is phenomenal on both. I honestly don’t see myself ever needing the 2.8 version of this lens.

Very sharp lens! You can take exceptional low light pictures with these lenses. Great size and compact for a 24-70mm. A must-have lens if you have a Z7 or Z6! Takes advantage of the camera's resolution.

I love having the Nikkor Z 24-70mm f4 S with my Z6. Very versatile lens not just for videos but landscapes and portraits as well. I shot family photos over Christmas and it performed exceptionally well on low light situations. A great value kit lens that I would recommend to anyone.

I have owned close to a dozen Nikon lenses and find the 24-70mm f/4 S to be one of the sharpest. When using the Z6 body and higher ISO speeds it’s very close in performance to the higher priced f2.8 S. The lens is also both lightweight and quiet when focusing.

When I bought my Z6 I didn't get the 24-70 F4 thinking I would shoot my old 24-70 F2.8, but after a little while and reading up on the Z 24-70 F4 I bought it. Wow, a great camera/lens combo and it stays on the Z6 all the time and gets a lot of use. I also shoot the D500 for birds and the D850 for special needs like fireworks.

I was not expecting to really see how useful this lens would be. Since it's called a "kit" lens I expected less quality but was surprised to see how great this lens is. The range of zoom is really useful, the optics really crisp and since it is designed for the Z series it adds to the versatility of this camera.

Great lens, it is very sharp corner to corner. At first, I had questions about the f/4, I must say, it does not bother me as the ISO is so good with the Z. The only think I am not keen with is the “fly by wire” of the lens. I like the feel of focus stops for marks.

Excellent all around lens

The new S series 24-70mm Nikkor lens is a must have for your new Z series camera for multiple reasons. The achievable focal lengths are wide enough for good scenery shoots and narrow enough for good portraits. To me, the lens behaves like it’s about a 1/2 to 3/4 stops faster which was a pleasant surprise. The low light performance is impressive. For those of you who like to do video, this lens has absolutely ZERO lens breathing and focus shifts are butter smooth. It’s just a very solid perfor...

The NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/4 S is a versatile zoom lens that offers a wide range of useful perspectives for Nikon’s Z Series mirrorless cameras. It covers everything from a wide focal length of 24mm, for capturing spectacular landscapes and fun group shots, to a medium telephoto focal range of 70mm for portraits and shooting subjects from a distance. The fixed maximum aperture of f/4 enables a brighter, more consistent exposure all throughout the zoom range and allows the lens to have a more compact and lightweight body. The fast, silent, and precise AF performance, as well as the full-time manual focus override, allow for more creative control and extremely sharp results. Meanwhile, to ensure professional imaging, it features an aspherical extra-low dispersion lens element and three aspherical elements for significantly reduced aberrations and distortions throughout the full zoom range, resulting in exceptional sharpness and clarity. Lens surfaces also feature Nano Crystal and Super Integrated coatings to suppress flare and ghosting for higher contrast images and greater color fidelity. Like all other NIKKOR Z lenses, the 24-70mm f/4 S has a programmable control ring on the lens body for more intuitive control over various camera and exposure settings.
I was lucky enough to spend a full week shooting nearly non-stop with the new Nikon mirrorless system. I may have stopped for sleep a bit but, otherwise, I was able to shoot in multiple regions throughout the Yucatan Peninsula and then flew a few hours up north, with our crew, to Guanajuato, Mexico. And then I shot a whole lot more. I was able to put the new system through the paces — shooting in large, rainforest-like sinkholes, in pitch-dark caves, at pink lagoons, above colorful landscapes, and in and above the streets of a large, sprawling city.
My first impression of the new system is pretty straightforward: It’s just extraordinary.

A 24-70mm zoom lens covers a sweet spot of the focal length range. With the NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/4 S Lens, you can capture wide-angle views one moment, close-ups the next, and everything in between. This reimagining of the classic everyday zoom, optimized and evolved for new Z series mirrorless cameras, achieves breakthrough image quality and performance for both stills and videos.
Cutting-edge optical technology
Empowered by the Z system's larger mount, shorter flange distance, and cutting-edge imaging advancements, the NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/4 S lens delivers uncanny sharpness, vibrance, and even lighting across the entire frame.
The constant f/4 max aperture of this NIKKOR Z series lens maintains consistent exposure at any zoom setting. Record smooth zoom transitions with even lighting across the entire sequence.
The larger Z Mount enables epic definition and resolution from the center of the frame to the edges. No need to stop this lens down.
A new optical formula achieves faithful color reproduction with minimal axial/lateral chromatic aberration and virtually zero sagittal coma flare, even at 24mm.
At home away from home
With a highly versatile zoom range for both stills and video, yet a wonderfully compact and lightweight design, the NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/4 S lens is an ideal travel companion.
Close focus is less than 1 foot (11.8-inches) from your subject (at any focal length) for macro-style shots with a 0.3X reproduction ratio—much larger than most comparable lenses.
Uses the Z series mirrorless camera's superior in-camera image stabilization system for up to 5 stops of pitch, roll, yaw, and X and Y shake correction. Additional electronic VR (e-VR) during video capture.
Extensively sealed against dust and moisture, especially around all moving parts of the lens barrel. Includes nonstick Fluorine coating on the front lens element for easy cleaning.
Next-generation Z design and optics
Nikkor Z lenses, perfectly matched to Z series mirrorless camera bodies, are designed with a sense of consistency that combines reliability and beauty with next-dimension optical performance for freedom in image creation.
The larger Z Mount allows more data to be shared between lens and camera for faster, more accurate focusing and improved distortion control.
Designed specifically for the new Z Mount size, an ultra-quiet new stepping motor (STM) powers fast, near-silent AF and aperture adjustments.
The customizable lens ring on the NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/4 S can be used for manual focusing (default), aperture control (great for iris transitions during video recording), or exposure compensation.
Stepping Motor: NIKKOR Z lenses use a stepping motor for fast, accurate, smooth, quiet autofocus with reduced wobbling. This quiet drive system makes the lenses ideal for use when shooting video.
Aspherical – Extra-low Dispersion Glass Elements: An ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass element that features the characteristics of an Aspheric glass element for a more compact-sized lens. Like Aspherical lenses, AS-ED lens elements minimize coma and other types of lens aberrations, even when used at the widest aperture by continuously changing the refractive index from the center of the lens. The AS-ED lens elements are optical glass developed by Nikon to obtain optimum correction of chromatic aberrations.
Aspherical Lens: A lens with a curved, non-spherical surface. Used to reduce aberrations and enable a more compact lens size. Aspherical lenses minimize coma and other types of lens aberrations, even when used at the widest aperture. They are particularly useful in correcting distortion in wide-angle lenses and help contribute to a lighter, more compact design by reducing the number of standard (spherical) elements necessary. Aspherical lens elements correct these distortions by continuously changing the refractive index from the center of the lens.
Nano Crystal Coat: An anti-reflective coating developed by Nikon that virtually eliminates internal lens element reflections across a wide range of wavelengths. Nano Crystal Coat solves ghost effects caused by red light and effectively reduces ghost and flare caused by light entering the lens diagonally.
Electromagnetic Diaphragm Mechanism: An electromagnetic diaphragm mechanism in the lens barrel provides highly accurate electronic diaphragm or aperture blade control when using auto exposure during continuous shooting. With conventional D/G type lenses, the diaphragm blades are operated by mechanical linkage levers.
IF Lens: A NIKKOR lens in which only the internal lens group shifts during focusing. Thus, IF NIKKOR lenses do not change in size during AF operation, allowing for compact, lightweight lenses capable of closer focusing distances. These lenses will be designated with the abbreviation IF on the lens barrel.
Fluorine Coat: Photographers need gear that can withstand the elements. Nikon’s fluorine coat effectively repels dust, water droplets, grease or dirt, ensuring easy removal even when they adhere to the lens surface. Nikon’s fluorine coat endures a high frequency of lens surface wiping and its anti-reflective effect also contributes to the capture of clear images.
Super Integrated Coating: Nikon Super Integrated Coating is Nikon's term for its multilayer coating of the optical elements in NIKKOR lenses.
A remarkable fusion of versatility and innovation, the NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/4 S Lens is far from your standard zoom lens. Engineered specifically for Nikon's revolutionary Z series cameras, this lens offers a dynamic focal length range of 24-70mm, effortlessly transitioning from capturing expansive wide-angle views to detailed close-ups in a heartbeat.
This lens is not just a reimagining of the classic everyday zoom, but a significant evolution, delivering breakthrough image quality and performance for both still photography and video recording. With its wide aperture of f/4, it provides superior control over depth of field and excels in low light conditions, ensuring sharp, high-quality images every time.
Whether you're a landscape photographer capturing breathtaking vistas, a portrait artist focusing on intimate details, or a videographer shooting smooth, cinematic footage, the NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/4 S Lens is a reliable and durable tool in your creative arsenal. Its innovative design, coupled with Nikon's renowned reputation for quality, makes this lens an indispensable asset for any photography enthusiast or professional.
