I've always been a Canon shooter, with my main camera being a 7D Mark II. I've been wanting to get into full-frame for awhile and heard good things about the Z5. I have to tell you, this is a lot of camera for a reasonable price! Paired with a Nikkor Z 24-200 VR (which I bought to go along with the Z5) and you can pretty much shoot anything. It's pretty light, has custom function buttons and with the firmware update there isn't much it can't do. The only issue I had was there was no battery in the box, but a quick message to Adorama fixed that and they sent one right out. So 5 stars for the camera and 5 stars to Adorama.

I'm a long time customer of Adorama, and have bought routine supplies, lenses and cameras, both new and used in the past. My equipment path started with Pentax in film days and progressed through Olympus, Sony and now Nikon. I currently drive a Nikon Z7 and love it. I was looking for a second Z body as a backup and wanted as much compatibility as I could find in a second body, but wanted to be cost conscious as well. Found this Z5 body on the used page for a good price in E+ condition. On arrival, cosmetic inspection certainly confirmed the E+ rating, as it came in original box with all accessories as if new, and a manual that had never apparently been opened! I updated firmware and had a slight problem with apparently the second SD card slot. With a card in that slot, I could not access the menu function. Did a quick search and found that one has to format the cards IN THE SPECIFIC CAMERA in order to eliminate this problem. This review would have been 5* if the firmware did not have to be updated. My main camera remains Nikon's amazing D850, but I've been very curious about mirrorless camera handling for some time. It occurred to me that The Z5 specs meet most of my daily needs at a great sale price, so I ordered one with the FTZ II adapter. It takes some getting used to, and quite a few cables and adapters to integrate studio equipment gear for DSLRs. All nine of my F-mount lenses work well. The only loss is the ability to autofocus my beloved Nikon AF 180mm f/2.8 ED IF, but I worked for 30 years without autofocus, so it doesn't bother me :) The handling experience for an old-timer is similar to a rangefinder.

Wow! I am overwhelmed with what my Z5 can do! I have not owned a digital camera other than my phone since retiring my old Nikon FG 25 years ago. There is a lot to learn! Love the feel and ability. The results are worth every penny of the Nikon investment. My 24-200 lens is all I need........for now!

After ten years of using Nikon D7100's it was time to upgrade. I considered the Z6ll alongside the Z5. Although the Z6ll had all of the features that I was looking for the Z5 was a better choice with just enough features. I am a Professional and don't rely on the top-of-the-line cameras as they offer more than I require. I ordered the Z5 along with the FTZ ll mount adapter as I have two DX lenses among all of my lenses. I specialize in Fine Art Photography and occasionally Portraits. I have just started using the Z5 over Christmas, first with Candid Portraits and then with Christmas Light displays. For the Portraits I used an older Nikon SB800 flash at 60-degree bounce and side Window light. There was a setting on the Z5 for flash that was not on the D7100, Fill flash. The fill flash worked better than I expected. For the Christmas light displays I used the higher ISO that the Z5 offered. Previously I was only able to go no higher than ISO 6400 but on the Z5 I was able to set the ISO at 25600 and 32000 with excellent results and no visible noise. I was not able to purchase a Z Mirrorless lens, but I intend to in the future. Finally with Nikon's rebate program of $400.00 off for the Z5 and $100.00 off for the FTZ ll adapter I was able to purchase earlier than planned. Also, since I had to finance the Nikon no interest for two years also helped with purchasing earlier.

Changing over from Micro Four Thirds to Full Frame Mirrorless was easy transition. Just love the bright viewfinder, easy menu and most importantly the brilliant color quality especially with the 50 mm F 2.8 S lens. Please do not call this entry level full Frame Mirrorless. This is my gear for professional event and wedding photography. At this moment cant yet let go completely of my MFT Camera and lenses. GO Z5!!!!

I bought the Z5 primarily for the auto eye focus, and that is working well. I'm still learning how to optimize settings, and it's good to have 3 preset buttons for that purpose. This is a nice step up from my D7100 of the last 10 years. I got a Z40mm/2.0 lens that is small and good for portraits, plus it's performing well in low light night scenes.

I've been a Nikon user for over 45 years. The Z5 is the perfect camera for those who put emphasis more towards still images rather than video. Two SD II card slots are a welcome, The conductivity with Blue Tooth and WIFI are great, the ability to connect to PC is what I need as a professional, a feature my D850's don't have! I bought the Z5 as a travel camera and paired it with the Z 50mm F1.8 along with the Z 28mm f2.8. The size of the gear make it a pleasure for more casual assignments where I don't need the larger D bodies and lenses. What I would love to see is a better card door mechanism, it opens to easy if your not careful pulling out of a messenger bag. The Autofocus is still slow in tracking but better than the Z6 and Z7. The Z5 is labelled as an entry level, it's not entry level by any means. Best image quality and value in 35mm full frame format mirrorless.

Bought this as a backup to my D850, and as a walk around camera, to save the D850 shutter for more important work. Using the Z 24-200 as my main lens, but got the FTZ II to use my F lenses if needed. It is a bit of a culture shock to use the digital view finder, but it is growing on me. I am old school, so I rarely use the rear screen for still shots. Focus is quick, and VR does a good job. Battery held up better than the reviews, and specs, which could be that I use the view finder, and not the back screen. Will I completely move to mirrorless?no, but having a light weight option, as a backup is nice.

It is a good camera that could be excellent or better camera than it is. I switched from the Fijifilm system (X-T3 and X-T4) to Nikon Z5 and several prime lenses. I love the image quality, I think it's exceptional. But I'm worried about firmware support since we know what the Xpeed 6 processor can achieve and I don't see any updates and support for this camera body and I'm starting to worry. I don't complain about the image quality. But yes, from the autofocus and af speed is to slow. Good camera, but it can be much better.

You never realize what you have been missing until you have it! I had been sitting on the fence for quite some time in switching over to mirrorless. My main drawback was having to reinvest in lenses. Just for the record, for my entire photography career, I have always shot with crop sensor cameras. I've owned the D70, D300, D300S, D7100 and D7200, over the past 20 years. So now, as I saw my colleagues switch over, it took me back to when we were moving from the film age into the digital age. I initially considered jumping on the Lumix bandwagon but then I was like, no...Nikon has been so good to me. After watching practically every single video on Nikon mirrorless, I finally bit the bullet and decided on the Z5. OMG! Why did it take me this long! EVERY SINGLE THING about this camera is beautiful! Moving from DX to FX and my old lenses coupled with the FTZII adapter is AMAZING!!! Except for my Tamron 70-200mm, but I've seen videos where it seems there is an issue pairing TAMRON lenses with the Z5...so my next order of business is to invest in the Z Glass 70-200. I have a NIKKOR 50mm (MY GAWD at 1.4, bokeh is like butter.) My Sigma EX 24-70mm 2.8 DG HSM works BEAUTIFULLY with the adapter...this was truly my main concern because this is my workhorse lens. Sadly, my Tokina AT-X PRO SD 11-16 F2.8 (IF) DX isn't giving me the quality I desire. Even when I switch over to the DX mode. I'll play around with this a bit more, because the image quality seems a bit muddy. The lens is an old lens and maybe it's had it's time, but I'll see. All in all...if you have been on the fence like I have and you just want to know if it's worth it without all the technical jargon that is given in most videos...GET IT! GET IT! GET IT! I'm definitely considering purchasing another one before the year is out. OH and you won't miss the LCD display on the top. This review is only posted a day after receiving and testing the camera. I will update as time passes.

I have just received my Z5, so this review is based on first impressions, and they are all good. I've been a user of Nikon digital cameras for more than ten years. After owning several DX format DSLRs, I bought a Z50 for travel and was impressed with the smaller size and weight of the mirrorless format. I have long considered buying a FX format camera and purchased the Z5 with 24-200mm lens. This camera-lens combination is nearly identical in size and weight to my old D7100 with 18-140mm zoom. The build quality and control placement is excellent; the camera fits comfortably in the hands and operates in a way that is familiar and intuitive for a Nikon user. The vibration reduction is impressive; hand held shots are possible at very low shutter speeds. I'll keep my Z50 for travel, but when I can handle the bigger size and want FX format quality, I know the Z5 will deliver. I'm looking forward to many fine photos from this camera. Oh, and the big Z-mount is just fantastic! If you've ever considered stepping up to FX format, especially from a DSLR, this is the camera for you.

Quite impressed with the Z5. I have had mirrorless cameras before, but this is my first full frame camera. I wanted to take my photography to the next level and after taking photos with only my smartphone, I am blown away with the easy of use as well as the controls I can have when taking photos on the Z5. I would definitely recommend this to anyone wanting to move to full frame photography. I must note, if taking 4k videos is a high priority, I would recommend either the Z6 or Z7. I take mainly stills, so this is perfect for me. Also, the 1080p video quality is quite good. The Z5 is 5 out of 5 stars for me.

Beware when considering a "Refurbished" version of this camera and the 24-50 kit lens. I made that mistake and received a lens with visible marks from use on the barrel, and the ring with the focal length mark moves back and forth so that you can't tell what focal length you have. The camera itself has issues with the EVF (snowy image, jittery motion). Save your money for something better.

But the customization possibilities of the Z5 are very good and the improvement in image quality is enormous. It is a very well balanced camera at a very affordable price that allows entry to Nikon mirrorless and when you learn to work with it (very quickly) it becomes a very powerful and fun tool.

The Z5 is a wonderful entry point into the full frame Z series cameras by Nikon. I use a D850 for most of my photography (landscapes), but the Z5 is my go to when I prefer something more lightweight. The Z5 has everything I need feature-wise and nothing I don't. I absolutely LOVE the mode dial on the grip side (unlike the other Z cameras). This makes it very quick and intuitive to operate and I don't miss the top LCD screen at all. The simple ergonomics are brilliant! This is a very capable camera and I'm continually impressed the more I use it. It really shines with static or slower moving subjects, which are the majority of my images. However, I've made some of my best photos of hummingbirds in flight with my Z5. This really isn't what this camera was designed for, yet performed astonishingly well! In summary: This is a great choice for someone wanting to move into the full frame mirrorless world or for a more advanced photographer wanting a lightweight, no frills, yet very capable camera.

I'm giving this five stars for overall value and functionality (since I can't do half-star ratings so I'll give NIkon the benefit of the doubt here). This is perhaps the best value in entry-level Full frame cameras there is, with dual card slots, in body stabilization and a very good sensor. Obviously the two biggest drawbacks here are the focus tracking and video (4k) with the heavy crop, but if you're mainly a stills photographer and looking for a budget full frame camera, or a second/backup camera, this is it. If you happen to catch them on sale it's an even better value, but even at the regular price, it's still a lot of camera for the money, and the image quality rivals that of some of it's peers and even previous notable Nikon cameras like the D810 and D750/D780 despite perhaps having older sensor technology (don't let that steer you away from this great camera, the camera performs very well and on par with the Z6 series minus the auto focusing and the video capabilities, but from an imaging/stills standpoint, it's a very good cheaper alternative if you don't want to spend $2k on the Z6).. I mean this camera includes many features you would previously only find in higher-end cameras (like the in-body stabilization and dual card slots).
