Nikon has done some great things with the Z7 that keeps it competitive in 2023. For one, the firmware update brought a highly responsive eye tracking feature which helps me out in portrait photography. It still struggles a bit on focusing a subject in low light condition but the eye tracking makes up for it. Come from a D800, which is no slough, the Z7 is a nice upgrade. Now my images are sharper than before. Docked a star because the only card it accepts is CFExpress Type B. My current magazine of memory cards are SDXC or CompactFlash.

Generally the el cheapo - bluff model. Banding can show up very easily, especially when exposure blending with luminosity masks. Avoid. A dumbed down D850 with significant flaws.

Love this camera. It is a great addition to my gear. I rented the Z7ii for a week before jumping into the mirrorless arena. I can't find any difference between the Z7 and Z7ii. I had to download a new firmware version to accommodate the lens mount, but it wasn't difficult.

The easiest to use most perfect camera I have ever owned. Not to large, not heavy, excellent viewfinder or just use the back screen, excellent auto focus and great subject tracking in video mode.

Photography is a hobby. I've only had the Z7 a few weeks and I'm still getting used to it. This week I was photographing butterflies and hummingbirds. Of course, they don't hold still and pose, so I did the typical "spray and pray" and hoped to find a few nice images when I got home. I was thrilled to find every photo was in focus! Now I can't wait until my next outing.

I love this camera switch from dslr so much that I put the project in my photography experience blog about saying bye bye to mirrors after shooting for 40years with them http://thephotographyexperience.com/issue_11/bye-bye-mirrors.html

This camera is all I need for the type of photography that I need. I did not want to pay the extra money for the newest version just to gain two card slots and some extra speed. The pictures that I get from this camera are outstanding.

I absolutely love my Nikon Z7. Shopping with Efraim at Adorama was a pleasure. The camera is a significant upgrade to my D7000. I also purchased two Nikkor lenses so the whole package was a significant investment and well worth it. I didn?t realize the camera is a computer that can be updated via software - wow! The images are super sharp and, if you?re a Nikon user, the learning curve isn?t bad at all. I?ve been out and about a few times just testing different conditions and I?m having a great time.

I'll be straight and honest about this camera and I'm not going to sugar coat anything. When I initially received this camera back in 2018, I was a bit disappointed with its AF performance. The AF tracking was clunky and tedious to enable and it wasn't on par as far as performance goes with my D850 as I was initially expecting. However, that didn't make me give up this camera. I didn't let the handicaps hinder my passion for taking shots with it. I tried to find a work around on some functions that wasn't working for me. Sometimes we as photographers got so spoiled with technology that we forget the skills we acquired because we mostly let the camera do most of the work for us. In the beginning of photography our fore-fathers never had such luxuries as what we enjoy today. But they were able to use their cameras despite the lack of technological help. I'd like to think this camera as that, however as time goes, I'm enjoying this camera more and more. It brings me back to the basics and allows for me to improve my craft. And as Nikon continually supports and provides firmware upgrades to further improve this camera, it is making it more compelling to use. I'd like to compare it to wine; as it ages it becomes better and better. So the question is: should you buy this camera? My answer is: An absolute YES!

Picture quality is amazing . It does not want to stay focused, or it is hard for it to stay focused on something moving. Needs battery grip with controls. D850 is still better.

Fantastic camera and lens, just like all the reviews said. I haven’t had any issues with banding so far even with some dark photos but I’m sure they might be there for the really discriminate eye. But so far with my usage I have not seen any image issues at all. This body is also rocksolid as a tank or a brick house. Was in Brussels on my way to dinner and slipped on the cobblestones and fell right on top of the Camera with my 220 pound body. A couple of scratches and the lens hood cracked. Dented the Nikon UV lens filter I had on for protection. Also appears one of the knobs hit the ground during the fall. The Canera is perfectly functional, just replaced the lens filter (I always have one on for outdoors stuff just in case). Even with all that, still works like a champ. If you walk around outside with your camera you should get this Z7.

Really great first full-frame mirrorless camera.
By mm1co
I got my Z7 on release day and have been very happy with it. The EVF is fantastic and is a real boon to people like me with bad near vision. When I use my D850 I can see through the viewfinder just fine because of the diopter adjustment, but I have to put on my reading glasses every time I want to review a photo on the back of the camera, or make menu changes. Very time consuming and annoying. With the Z7 I can do all that through the diopter corrected EVF. There are many great things about ...

Excellent camera. Light, powerful and well built.

I spent a few hours with this camera and it's all that we've been waiting for. You can read all the specs on the internet, so I'll just point out a few things I noticed. The grip and overall size is very similar to the D750, maybe a little lighter and thinner. Grip is almost the same. The back LCD screen is about the same as the D850, only difference is that the hinges are a new mechanism, it doesn’t tilt down all the way like the D850 does. Maybe about a 40 degree angle, not bad, but I wo...

I was lucky enough to spend a full week shooting nearly non-stop with the new Nikon mirrorless system. I may have stopped for sleep a bit but, otherwise, I was able to shoot in multiple regions throughout the Yucatan Peninsula and then flew a few hours up north, with our crew, to Guanajuato, Mexico. And then I shot a whole lot more. I was able to put the new system through the paces — shooting in large, rainforest-like sinkholes, in pitch-dark caves, at pink lagoons, above colorful landscapes, and in and above the streets of a large, sprawling city.
My first impression of the new system is pretty straightforward: It’s just extraordinary.

A system that opens a new dimension of possibilities. A system inspired by the past but designed for tomorrow. A system only Nikon could create.
Decades of refining camera design, at your fingertips.
Inspired by D850, Z series cameras embody the elegance, durability, handling and operation of award-winning Nikon DSLRs—just in a smaller package.
A large, deep grip for balanced handling, even when using large telephoto F-Mount Nikkor lenses. Comfortable ergonomics, thoughtful button placement and an easy to use GUI.
Meet the first in a new generation of Nikkor lenses. Designed around the new larger Z Mount and beautifully matched to Z series cameras, Nikkor Z lenses embody the ultimate in image quality with near-silent operation—all in a smaller, lighter package.
With the optional Mount Adapter FTZ, Z series cameras are fully compatible with over 90 F-Mount Nikkor lenses, which retain all their sharpness, rendering power and functionality. Plus, they gain so much—smooth, fast Hybrid-AF*, silent shooting, in-camera VR and more. In total, approximately 360 F-Mount Nikkor lenses can be used.
$100 Instant Savings on one (1) Mount Adapter FTZ when purchased together with Z6 or Z7 camera.
*Full AF/AE supported when using FX or DX AF-S Type G/D/E, AF-P type G/E, AF-I type D and AF-S / AF-I Teleconverters
The technology may be all new, but the ingenuity is all Nikon.
At the heart of Z series cameras are FX-format image sensors designed by Nikon to make full use of the extra light provided by the large Z Mount.
EXPEED 6, the most advanced Nikon image processing yet, powers breathtaking image quality, liberating low-light performance and versatile video capabilities.
A 5-axis optical VR system is built right into Z series cameras for up to 5 stops* of image stabilization when using Nikkor Z lenses and up to 3-axis VR when using F-Mount Nikkor lenses**. Additional electronic VR (e-VR) can be combined during video capture.
*Based on CIPA Standards. This value is achieved when the Nikkor Z 24-70mm f/4 S lens is attached, with zoom set at the maximum telephoto position. **Full AF/AE supported when using FX or DX AF-S Type G/D/E, AF-P type G/E, AF-I type D and AF-S / AF-I Teleconverters
Mirrorless design, on-sensor PDAF and whisper-quiet lenses let you shoot with complete stealth. Capture special moments without interrupting them.
The video advantages of mirrorless design—fast, accurate on-sensor Phase Detection Auto Focus (PDAF), in-camera VR and a brilliant Electronic Viewfinder—plus the most robust 4K UHD video feature set on any Nikon camera yet.
Shown with optional ME-1 Microphone and third-party Camera Rig.
The largest full-frame mount on any camera system. At 55mm, it’s the largest full-frame mount on any camera system**, allowing more of everything: more light capture, more data sharing between lens and camera and more image quality performance.
And By seemingly breaking the laws of optics with just 16mm of flange distance, Nikon can now deliver smaller and lighter cameras and lens designs impossible in any other mirrorless system.
* Compared to Nikon F Mount
*As of August 23, 2018; image may not be to scale
Absolutely stunning 3.6M-dot electronic viewfinder designed with Nikon optics for a crystal clear view and a comfortable, intuitive shooting experience. Includes a custom in-screen menu, minimal blackout during fast-shooting, and it can be used during video recording.
Compose with crystal clarity on a large, 2.1M dot display that tilts for easier high and low shots. Touch to focus and fire the shutter. Navigate menus, playback and more as if you were using a smartphone.
Review key camera settings from the top of the camera on a low-power OLED screen, just like high-end Nikon DSLRs.
Shoot up to 12 FPS with Z6 and 9 FPS with Z 7 at full resolution in 12-bit RAW or JPEG without the need for an external battery pack.
The Z Mount allows higher-speed, larger-volume communication between the lens and camera body for dramatic gains in AF adjustments and image processing—for today and the even faster cameras of tomorrow.
Z series cameras easily connect using Nikon SnapBridge* to compatible smart devices for remote shooting and transferring JPEG photos on the go.
*Download required
Connect to a Mac or PC using Z series cameras’ built-in Wi-Fi for monitoring and transferring JPEG, RAW or video.
Our vision has always been to create cameras and lenses that capture more light. More light means more detail. More speed. More possibilities. The Z 7 brings that vision to life (and then some). Combining the advantages of a lightweight mirrorless design, a revolutionary new full-frame lens mount and matched lenses, a Nikon designed 45.7MP image sensor and seamless integration with Nikon's DSLR system including the NIKKOR lenses you love the Z 7 is a camera unlike any before it. And yet, it's unmistakably a Nikon. This is mirrorless reinvented.
