I haven't tried this one for action shots, but for anything else, if your shot comes out poorly, you probably did something wrong. Love this lens.

Outstanding quality. It's been great for events where I have room to step back. Exelent lowlight performance.

Love it more than I thought. I had the Z mount 85mm F1.8 and watched the videos suggesting that was sharper than the F1.2. Thankfully I thought better of it and bought the lens. It's a magic maker. I love it. I've had Nikon lenses for 30 years. Constantly upgrading and amassed over 10 great lenses. And my F mount 85 was my all time favorite. I still love it, but I'll not miss it. It's been replaced!

Coupled with the Z9, this is an unbeatable concert lens! Focus is fast and accurate, delivering sharp images, even wide open with moving subjects. I could not be more pleased!

Stunning piece of glass. Very fast autofocus and renders colors and contrast better than any other piece of Nikon glass I own (not to say any of them are slouches). Not a fan of 85mm focal length but this pulls me out of my comfort zone and get creative. Bravo Nikon.

A picture's worth a thousand words as they say. This holds especially true for this lens. The sharpness and separation of the background and subject is staggering. Even during a race with fast moving subjects, it's unbelievable how sharp and focused it is. It's expensive, but you definitely get what you pay for. If you're looking to elevate your photography game and give your clients the best of the best, look no further. This is it.

This is a great lens. I've had this sense early April 2023. You can find reviews online for a more in-depth review. The 85mm 1.2 is mounted on my Z9 ,it is well balanced and feels great in my hands. The separation of subject to back ground is amazing at 1.2 aperture, the subject pops and is sharp while the background just disappears. The resolve of this lens is awesome the detail in landscapes will amaze you. This lens is great for portraits and does landscapes and night photography very well. the attached photos were both shot at 1.2 aperture .

This is the lens I have been waiting for as a long time Nikon shooter and launch day/early Z mount mirrorless adopter. This lens is beautifully designed and has a great weight to it, not much more different than the 50mm f1.2. This is truly a premium lens, worthy of the "Superior" badge. I recently had a photo shoot that ran into the night hours. I typically dislike shooting at night. Having to boost ISO or using light that will leave your background completely underexposed if you are not careful. Also having to shoot at slower shutter speeds can become very cumbersome and limiting. With the f/1.2 max aperture of this lens, I was able to use a light wand to illuminate my subjects while preserving the dimly lit environment for context and depth. The bokeh is very dreamy, and before now, my favorite lens for creamy bokeh was from the adapted 105mm f1.4. The improved working distance of 85mm and the faster 1.2 aperture greatly improves my workflow. Stopping down the aperture still yields some very sharp and amazing images, but if you pay this much for a pro level lens with a 1.2 aperture, I assume you may want to shoot at that 1.2 as much as possible. Otherwise the 85mm f1.8 would be more than sufficient.

It is a bokeh beast! The lens is large, and i feel i can hide behind it, or my Z7ii body can. It's super quiet and fast and focus is sharp all around! Low light situations? No problem! It feels like holding a newborn in your hands. I've shot a wedding with it already and I'm in love with it, along with the other photogs who saw me use use it!

The bokeh and blur makes the images pop up so well ...and the sharpness and rendering is extremely pleasing. In fact the pics look better than the reality. I am hobbyist and was worrying about the weight, but this isn't as heavy as I expected and feels good in the hands. It does appear much bigger with lens hood attached. Will be my primary lens for family portraits unless I am traveling long distance where 24-70 2.8S would serve the purpose.

The King of Portrait Lenses

Portrait perfect.
Classic view. Exotic aperture.
Among photo and video pros shooting portraiture, weddings, maternity, high fashion and boudoir, the NIKKOR Z 85mm f/1.2 S is bound to become a legend. Breathtaking realism with dreamlike depth. Backgrounds that melt away into a soft bokeh. Beautifully flattering compression. Autofocus you can trust with once-in-a-lifetime moments.
Cherished focal length.
With its flattering slimming effect, intimate yet comfortable working distance and light telephoto compression, an 85mm prime is ideal for capturing authentic human expression.
Striking background separation.
The combination of the paper-thin f/1.2 plane of focus, the flattering perspective compression of 85mm and the intense sharpness of this lens create a three-dimensional effect that immediately commands attention.
Bokeh beyond belief.
The fast f/1.2 aperture is shaped by 11 rounded blades, more than most lenses, for smoother, rounder, more natural blur. At f/2, point light sources transform into dreamlike orbs and out of focus areas dissolve into a painterly haze.
Low-light freedom.
Nikon's larger Z mount increases the light gathering performance of the f/1.2 aperture, flooding the image sensor with light and allowing you to shoot in near darkness.
Embrace backlighting.
Natural backlighting like sunsets can create some of the most glamorous. dramatic shots-especially at weddings. Nikon's Nano Crystal Coat (N) offers extraordinary tolerance to backlighting, glare and flare, while Extra-Low Dispersion (ED) and Aspherical Lens Elements (AS) prevent color fringing and aberration.
Z mount: Bigger. Better.
With the largest diameter of any mirrorless system, Z mount unlocks new capabilities for lenses-larger rear elements that deliver more light to the sensor, more beautiful bokeh, suppressed focus breathing and faster camera-to-lens communication.
Dramatic focus transitions
Enable linear focusing for controlled, accurate manual focus pulling, or let the camera do the work with near-silent Eye-Detect AF. Focus breathing is highly suppressed, so you won't notice an apparent change to field of view when moving focus from one subject to another.
Autofocus as decisive as the moment.
There's no second chance for once-in-a-lifetime moments. Nikon's Multi-Focus System uses dual STM stepping motors moving in sync for flawless precision, even when shooting wide open at f/1.2 where mere millimeters matter.
Textures you can almost feel.
With such outstanding resolution, the NIKKOR Z 85mm f/1.2 S captures the fine textures of skin, hair and fabric with lifelike precision.
S-Line: The very best.
As an S-Line lens, NIKKOR Z 85mm f/1.2 S has the most superb optics, beautiful bokeh, advanced video features and premium weather sealing and professional build quality.
Built for pros.
tune. Manual focus ring.
Make smooth, precise focus transitions. Turn on linear focus for video work.
Shortcut. L-Fn buttons.
Activate subject tracking, image playback, AF Lock and more from the L-Fn button. Customize your gear for the way you shoot.
Make it yours. Control ring.
Smooth, precise and clickless. Manually adjust aperture, ISO or exposure compensation.
Technology
ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) Glass
An optical glass developed by Nikon that is used with normal optical glass in telephoto lenses to obtain optimum correction of chromatic aberrations.
Aspherical Lens
A lens with a curved, non-spherical surface. Used to reduce aberrations and enable a more compact lens size. Aspherical lenses minimize coma and other types of lens aberrations, even when used at the widest aperture. They are particularly useful in correcting distortion in wide-angle lenses and help contribute to a lighter, more compact design by reducing the number of standard (spherical) elements necessary. Aspherical lens elements correct these distortions by continuously changing the refractive index from the center of the lens.
IF Lens
A NIKKOR lens in which only the internal lens group shifts during focusing. Thus, IF NIKKORS do not change in size during AF operation, allowing for compact, lightweight lenses capable of closer focusing distances. These lenses will be designated with the abbreviation IF on the lens barrel.
A/M
A/M stands for Auto-Priority Manual Mode. This mode also enables an easy transition from autofocus to manual during AF operation. However, mode switch sensitivity has been altered to reduce the possibility of sudden unintentional switching to manual focus while shooting.
Electromagnetic Diaphragm Mechanism
An electromagnetic diaphragm mechanism in the lens barrel provides highly accurate electronic diaphragm or aperture blade control when using auto exposure during continuous shooting.
Nano Crystal Coat
An anti-reflective coating developed by Nikon that virtually eliminates internal lens element reflections across a wide range of wavelengths. Nano Crystal Coat solves ghost effects caused by red light and effectively reduces ghost and flare caused by light entering the lens diagonally.
