Over the years, the U 67 Set Large-Diaphragm Tube Condenser Microphone, finished in a sleek nickel, has become synonymous with the iconic sound of the 1960s. This legendary tube microphone, originally introduced in 1960, was the backbone of many recording studios during the pivotal years of modern music evolution. Today, its unique and smooth sound quality is still highly sought after, making it a timeless piece of audio equipment.
The U 67, a product of Neumann's superior engineering, is back in production, meticulously crafted to match the original specifications. This microphone was launched as a successor to the renowned Neumann U 47 and quickly became the new standard in recording studios due to its advanced features and superior performance.
Equipped with three selectable polar patterns and advanced tube circuitry, including low cut and pad switches, the U 67 is versatile and well-suited for a wide range of recording tasks. It's no wonder that many top-tier engineers would choose the U 67 as their go-to microphone for its unmatched sound quality and extraordinary versatility.
The U 67 was the first microphone to feature the famous K 67 capsule, a key component that contributes to the distinctive "Neumann sound". This capsule continues to be used in its successor, the U 87 A. The U 67 also boasts a masterful tube circuit with a smart pre-emphasis/de-emphasis scheme designed to minimize tube hiss.
This microphone was the first to cater to modern recording techniques such as close miking. Its switchable low cut filter compensates for the proximity effect that occurs at short recording distances. With its preattenuation feature, the U 67 can handle high sound pressure levels of up to 124 dB without distortion, providing a bit of "tube grit" for those who prefer it.
The U 67's cone-shaped body and tapered headgrille have become iconic symbols of the Neumann brand. This elegant design has been carried forward to its solid-state successor, the U 87, for over 50 years.
The current reissue of the U 67 is sonically identical to the original model produced from 1960-1971. Key components, such as the BV 12 output transformer, are carefully replicated based on original documentation. EF86 tubes are meticulously selected for optimal characteristics and lowest noise in a dedicated measurement facility.
The U 67 is a versatile studio microphone suitable for a wide range of applications. Its smooth top-end and subtle tube shimmer make it an exceptional choice for vocal recordings. With its linear response in three polar patterns - omni, cardioid, and figure-8, the U 67 is also an excellent choice for recording various instruments such as strings, woodwinds, brass, piano, drums, acoustic and electric guitar, bass guitar, and upright bass.
