The Novatron V600-D kit is a great way to do professional portraits right out of the box. Two of the flash heads have the 1 & 2 stop reducing feature and the third is non-adjustable (1 head must be fully on for the power pack). Portrait lighting w/ the Key, Fill & Background lights are easy. If the Background light is not needed then the third light (w/ Novatron modifier or temporary heavy black paper) can be used for hair or accent light. The power pack has an extra 4th connection for an additional future head. I am using my V600-D pack w/ 4 heads and have yet to need full power from it - but it's nice to have if it's needed. The 2 main black light stands are more than adequate for the flash heads w/ the umbrellas attached. The black background light stand can place the light on the floor aiming it up or it can be raised w/ it's adjustable pole. The umbrellas, made by Westcott, create a beautiful soft light and the flash heads can be used by themselves to create a harder light. I am currently shooting w/ 4 lights - 2 black backed silver umbrellas (Key & Fill) Background & Hair lights w/ Novatron barndoors & honeycomb grid and not using full power @ f11, iso 100. The frosting on the cake is the stiff woven nylon carry case the kit comes with. I have used it to take the system to clients house & office and it doesn't hurt that it looks professional. It's also great storage for the home studio. My no fuss light balance set up is the Key light w/ flash head set at minus 2 stops and Fill light at full power (the non adjustable head w/ the shorter cord). The Key light is closer to to the subject for softer light while the Fill light is farther back at the camera. The distances I set up to give me a 2 to 1 lighting ratio (both lights having an equal intensity /f stop on the subject). Then for 3 to 1 & 4 to 1 ratios I just bump up 1 & 2 stops on the selector switch on the back of Key light flash head! The Background & Hair lights are set once w/ the reducing heads for the particular set up and don't need readjusting. If I want to maintain the same camera f stop I then adjust the power setting on the pack! A while ago I switched from monolights to the Novatron pack & head system for my home studio - I love it. ALSO very important, I don't see why this system would not work for product / commercial photography. In 1989 I bought my first 3 monolights, 2 light stands, wall boom, barn doors, snoot & flash meter from Adorama and have never left them. The sales men, their service & their prices are the best in my opinion.

While this has been a good beginner set I really wish I had invested in either White Lightnings, Alien Bees or Hensels. They lack of modifiers or difficulty procurring modifiers relegates these to fills.
