I was blown away the first time I heard a guitarist using an MXR Phase 90 back in the '70s.  I didn't know you could do that.  It was the picture of simplicity: 1 knob.  That's what you get with the mode switch in the "Then" position, essentially a Phase 90 from the days of yore.  The "Now" position sharpens up the effect a little, but not drastically.

I'm thinking I'd like to have a "Depth" control to go for an even more subtle effect at times, but this is basically the Phase 90 I could never afford as a child and, in that capacity, it's a dream come true.
