Questions & Answers

douglas l : is this a good choice scope for use in wildlife photography with a canon eos camera at distances of 1/2 to 2 miles away? what other eye pieces are needed to have 50X to 250X mag?ANDREW R : Unfortunately no, this 'scope is not really geared toward terrestrial observation. In addition the equatorial mount will likely be incredibly awkward for observing/photographing wildlife.
Shopper : I'm trying to decide what to get. Why did you pick this one?FLOYD B : I bought this item because it had a multi-functional mount which I thought I could get the optional go-to hand controller, but after I bought it, Adorama told me that I could'nt purchase the hand controller because it was being discontinued. If you are new to astromony and don't know where all the planets and stars are located, make sure you consider a go-to mount for you scope, it will make things much easier.THOMAS S : I choose the Celestron because of price and the computerized star finder system, which I absolutely love. It makes all the difference when breaking out the telescope to show my son a planet or a nebula or galaxy. Rather than searching for an hour while he loses interest, I spend a couple minutes calibrating and then we're off. I'm very happy with my celestron.MARILYN T : My husband researched and decided it was the scope he wanted so I ordered it for him. I tried to forward this to him so he might answer, but my email got stripped of the essential information. Perhaps he can give you some pointers from my computer laterBILL K : I have both the 90mm and the 127mm Orion Maks. They are well made, all metal scopes, with sharp optics. They should be used mainly on planets and the moon, and for splitting double-stars. They are not made for galaxies. Great for use in the city, where darks skies aren't available, and for what I listed before, aren't necessary. Best value scope on the market. Remember, Maksutov style scopes need a long time to acclimatize to ambient temperature! So, keep your scope outside (maybe under a light cloth, or in inside an unheated garage) for at least an hour before trying to get great images. This is because the Maksutov front element is very thick glass, as is the mirror, so these have to stable temperature wise, not heating up or cooling down to the air temp, before they perform at their best.ROBERT T : I wanted a 5" MAK and was considering the Nexstar 127SLT or the Nexstar 5SE. The main reason that I ended up buying the 127SLT was the fact that I got it for $415 with free shipping instead of $600 for the 5SE. I had read a lot of reviews at astronomy forums and found that the tripod is the week link in the SLT. However, with a weekend spent disassembling and reinforcing the tripod joints this mount and tripod is rock solid now. If I had it to do over again I would still buy the 127SLT again.

Nice little scope

Bought this for the transit of venus. Great for brighter targets. Can be used for astro and terrestrial targets.

About Orion 127 Maksutov Cassegrain

The Orion StarMax 127mm Equatorial Mak-Cass Telescope has light-folding Maksutov-Cassegrain optical design and big 127mm (5") aperture for delivering high-resolution imaging performance in a tube only 14.5" long. The included AstroView equatorial mount provides more than ample support for high-magnification study.

With 55% greater light-gathering capacity than a 4" scope and double that of a 90mm, the hundreds of deep-sky objects plotted on your star atlas now become willing targets. On the other hand, the scope's long 1540mm focal length (f/12.1) permits magnifications upwards of 250x with optional eyepieces, allowing study of surface features on Mars and ring detail on Saturn. Internal tube baffling and multi-coatings on the meniscus lens maximize image contrast and brightness. The seamless aluminum tube is enameled a rich metallic burgundy and fitted with quality aluminum front and rear cells.

A built-in, two-bolt 1/4"-20 plate assures rigid coupling to the mount (or to a tripod for terrestrial use). Aluminum focus knob with rubber grip. Aluminum eyepiece holder with two large thumbscrew locks. Quality 25mm (62x) Sirius Plossl eyepiece (1.25") and mirror star diagonal. A 6x26 correct-image achromatic finder scope with aluminum dovetail bracket. Even a padded carrying case. Optional EQ-3M single and dual-axis electronic drives allow hands-free tracking.
